  • The recognition of such natural wave guides as plates, rods, hollow cylinders, multi-layer structures or simply an interface between two materials combined with an increased understanding of the physics and wave mechanics of guided wave propagation has led to a significant increase in the number of guided wave inspection applications being developed each year. Of primary attention Is the ability to inspect partially hidden structures, hard to access areas, and teated or insulated structures. An introduction to some physical consideration of guided waves followed by some sample problem descriptions in pipe, ice detection, fouling detection in the foods industry, aircraft, tar coated structures and acoustic microscopy is presented in this paper. A sample problem in Boundary Element Modeling is also presented to illustrate the move in guided wave analysis beyond detection and location analysis to quantification.

  • CAE technology is an integrated tool including all aspects such as powder, binder system, mixing, injection molding, debinding and sintering. Therefore, CAE technology is considered as one of core technologies for PIM industry in the future. Recently many researchers are developing not only CAE software itself but also application procedures of CAE software. In this study, the applications for CAE technology in PIM industry are presented including feedstock mixing effect, several cases of troubleshooting and optimization procedure.

  • The double-base number system has been used in digital signal processing systems for over a decade because of its fast inner product operation and low hardware complexity. This letter proposes an innovative multiplier architecture using hybrid operands. The multiplier can easily be linked to flash analog-to-digital converters or digital systems through a double-base number encoder (DBNE) for realtime signal processing. The design of the DBNE and the multiplier enable faster digital signal processing and require less hardware resources compared to the binary processing method.

  • We define product line (or mix) selection problem as selecting a subset of potential product variants that can simultaneously minimize product proliferation and maintain market coverage. Selecting the most efficient product mix is a complex problem, which requires analyses of multiple criteria. This paper proposes a method based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for product line selection. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a linear programming based technique commonly used for measuring the relative performance of a group of decision making units with multiple inputs and outputs. Although DEA has been proved to be an effective evaluation tool in many fields, it has not been applied to solve the product line selection problem. In this study, we construct a five-step method that systematically adopts DEA to solve a product line selection problem. We then apply the proposed method to an existing line of staplers to provide quantitative evidence for managers to generate desirable decisions to maximize the company profits while also fulfilling market demands.

  • This paper considers a two-user Gaussian interference channel with energy harvesting transmitters. Different than conventional battery powered wireless nodes, energy harvesting transmitters have to adapt transmission to availability of energy at a particular instant. In this setting, the optimal power allocation problem to maximize the sum throughput with a given deadline is formulated. The convergence of the proposed iterative coordinate descent method for the problem is proved and the short-term throughput maximizing offline power allocation policy is found. Examples for interference regions with known sum capacities are given with directional water-filling interpretations. Next, stochastic data arrivals are addressed. Finally, online and/or distributed near-optimal policies are proposed. Performance of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated through simulations.

  • The relation of the inlet fuel distribution, velocity, and overall equivalence ratio to the stability of a lean burning no-swirl dump combustor was examined. Premixed or partially premixed natural gas was introduced into the air stream, which flowed to the dump region through an annular inlet pipe. Inlet air was preheated upto 400 deg.C. Combustion instability was observed to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (> 0.6) as the degree of unpremixedness was increased. Instabilities exhibited a dominant frequency of ~ 500 Hz, which corresponded to a half wave mode of combustor. CH chemiluminescence and pressure fluctuations were in-phase when combustion instabilities occurred. Acetone LIF images revealed that there was a strong fuel concentration gradient across the inlet annulus. Phase resolved OH LIF images showed that inlet fuel distribution was affected by the combustion instabilities.

  • This paper presents results of experimental study of flame chemiluminescence from turbulent premixed flames in a dump combustor. A detailed spectroscopic measurement of chemiluminescence over the wavelength of 405-495 nm is made for various flow conditions. No effect of turbulence on the relationship between chemiluminescence and heat release is found, suggesting the overall chemiluminescence intensity collected be used as a measure of overall heat release for non-oscillating stable flame. The background-$CO_2^*$ subtracted $CH^*$ chemiluminescence is found to be more sensitive to the equivalence ratio and premixedness of fuel-air mixture than $CO_2^*$ chemiluminescence.
