Recently, there has been growing interest in barrier-free design which makes safe and convenient space for every pedestrian, not only the non-disabled but also the disabled. The purpose of this study is to suggest the data on the pavement materials of barrier-free pedestrian environment in view of universal design. In order to this, the research is focused on evaluating the visual preference and preference factors for pavement scenery, which can be changed by pavement materials. And this research is also comparing the visual preference and preference factors of the disabled with that of the non-disabled. A multi-regression analysis method is adopted to analyse the correlation between the visual preference for pavement scenery and preference factors in this study. The result of this analysis is as follows. Firstly, there are some differences of visual preference for the pavement material between the disabled and the non-disabled. Secondly, independent variables influencing on preference are similar between two groups. Thirdly, there are some differences in the priority of preference between the disabled and the non-disabled. This study will contribute to the field of barrier-free design and sustainable development projects in order to maximize the human being's satisfaction.
Purpose: Subway in Seoul, Korea is an important urban mass transportation system as it carries more than 4 million people a day. To support this important mission, subway entrances were designed and installed to maximize accessibility to the stations. However, a uniform plan by the national government guided quantity and layout of the subway entrances. Therefore, the plan did not consider unique characteristics of each station area and reorganization of the subway entrance system is required to improve pedestrian environment. Method: This study grouped the subway entrances into specific patterns to propose reorganizing schemes. The authors conducted field surveys, examined case studies and proposed an entrance reorganizing plan for each type. Result: The study recommends subway entrances be installed inside adjacent building when large commercial or office complexes are nearby. The authors proposed installing a bridge connecting the stations and adjacent buildings for elevated entrances. This would be only possible when there are commercial or office facilities nearby with enough floor space. The study summarizes the pros and cons of each solution. To translate our proposals into realities, various incentives should be given to building or land owners. This study made suggestions as to which kinds of incentives exist and be effective in a range of situations.
The study establishes the analytical frame composed of 22 items according to the category of passageway, shop, entrance and amenity for the purpose of executing the empirical investigation of the Underground Public Pedestrian Facilities in Daegu Metropolitan City of Korea. As a result of the research work, the study finds out some problems about the facilities as follows: (1) Passageway elements - the skylight was constructed only in one place. In contrast, the standards of passageway and plaza were well-fulfilled except for one or two cases. (2) Shop elements - the cases of installing shops where they should not be located were found the most, and a case of over-establishing the shop area was found as well. (3) Entrance elements - the cases not matching roof or canopy standard over entrance facilities were found the most. Overall, the entrances and their connection to the adjacent buildings are appraised as not well-established. (4) Amenity elements - these were appraised as insufficient in all except two cases. Regarding this, not only necessary are the establishment of facilities and the effort of facility managers, but also urgent is the institutional improvement.
The old city centers of local metropolitans have lost their functions as CBD in korea. Those old city centers have an only role as a gate connected to the new CBD. This study aims to present regeneration stratigies of old city centers through Osaka case study. This research has been focused on the physical and environmental factors in urban regeneration. There are 4 strategies for old city centers. First, the strategy to attract people to the old city centers is high-density and mixed-use development having functions like shopping, entertainment, residence. This kind of development makes local metropolitan cities compact cities to protect urban sprawl. Second, strategy to give old city centers an identity is to conserve traditional culture and structures and to revitalize retail market. Third is to make pedestrian-friendly street system. Osaka ism't pedestrian friendly but remodelling the connect the pedestrian path to the culture facilities. Fourth is to have water and green environment. Green space is the strong factor that pull people to old city centers.
Currently, big data and open data, together with traditional measured data, have come to constitute a new data environment, expanding new technical paths for quantitative analysis of the street environment. Streets provide precious linear public space in high-density residential areas. Pedestrian activities are the main body of street vitality. In this paper, 441 street segments were selected from 21 residential districts in high-density downtown area of Shanghai as cases, to quantitatively evaluate the influencing factors of pedestrian activities. Bivariate analysis was performed, and the results showed that street vitality was not only correlated with a highly populated environment, but also with other factors. In particular, the density of entrances and exits of residential properties, the proportion of walkable areas, and the density of retail and service facilities, were correlated with the vitality of street segments. The magnitudes of correlation between the street environmental factors and the pedestrian traffic differed across various trip purposes. Segment connectivity factors were more correlated with walking for leisure than for transportation. While public transportation factors were mainly correlated with walking for transportation, vehicular traffic factors were negatively correlated with walking for leisure.

Because of the development of advanced construction technology, the inner environments of building become more and more complicated, which may result in many problems. The administer may forget where they put up the certain picture, and search for it all over the building, or they underestimate the number of the visitors, and find the situation is out of control, while the pedestrian may get lost, and after making their efforts, they found they turned back to the origin point again. So it is very necessary to establish an indoor spatial database. On one hand, it is able to assist administrator to manage the property and human flow inside the building, on the other hand it could help the pedestrian find the way easily especially when they are not familiar with the building or there is an emergency. This paper focused on how to create the indoor spatial database including both static database and moving objects database. The static database is built on the basis of 3D building models, and the moving objects database gets information from many kinds of cameras and sensors installed in the building. And at the same time the paper discussed the practical use of indoor spatial database mainly in three aspects including consistency management, building restructure, and pedestrian navigation.
Due to the unavailability of global positioning system (GPS) indoors, various indoor pedestrian positioning methods have been designed to estimate the position of the user using received signal strength (RSS) measurements from radio beacons, such as wireless fidelity (WiFi) access points and Bluetooth low energy (BLE) beacons. In indoor environments, radio-frequency (RF) signals are unpredictable and change over space and time because of multipath associated with reflection and refraction, shadow fading caused by obstacles, and interference among different devices using the same frequencies. Therefore, the outliers in the positional information obtained from the indoor positioning method based on RSS measurements occur often. For this reason, the performance of the positioning method can be degraded by the characteristics of the RF signal. To resolve this issue, a map-matching (MM) algorithm based on maximum probability (MP) estimation is applied to the indoor positioning method in this study. The MM algorithm locates the aberrant position of the user estimated by the positioning method within the limits of the adjacent pedestrian passages. Empirical experiments show that the positioning method can achieve higher positioning accuracy by leveraging the MM algorithm.
As the aging society is globally increasing, the guide for the aged-friendly city is suggested by WHO and many cities are preparing to meet with it. The base of this guide for an age-friendly city is an active aging. This study examined how degree the neighborhood environment is age-friendly from older persons' standpoints. The data were collected through the interview with old persons who aged more than 65 years, 117 persons in an urban area and 110 ones in a rural area. The age-friendly degree of neighborhood environment was examined from two aspects. One is how close 12 neighborhood facilities were from the elderly's houses. Another one is how degree the elderly were considered in 4 areas: pedestrian road, traffic, the amount of housing for the elderly, and space layouts of their houses. Findings were as follows. First, the elderly related neighborhood facilities in urban area were closer located to old persons' houses than in rural area, except the senior center. Second, in case of the age-friendly degree of their neighborhood environments, the space layout of house was the highest, and then traffic, pedestrian road, and the amount of housing for the elderly, in order. The consideration degree of wheelchair users was the lowest. Third, the age-friendly degree of pedestrian road, traffic, and room layout of house in rural area were higher than in urban area. However, the amount of housing for the elderly in urban area was higher than in rural area.

A variety of activity happens around the sidewalk in the city. Particularly, a large variety of activity happens in shopping area, but it causes an obstruction of economical revitalization since the pedestrians require time and cost to find what they want. So, this study will develop the path searching method to minimize the economical loss of shoppers by providing the significant path and supporting the walking movement. Firstly, consider existing network expression techniques and approach three points which are physical and environmental factor, the recognition of the pedestrians' space when changing the direction, and the recognition of restriction of vision and accessibility. Try to design the network DB and simulate the algorithm. As a result, it is now possible to do the path searching that considers variety of recognition factors and show the method how to make the path-searching algorithm for pedestrian.

The purpose of this study was to test the effects of the pedestrian green signal adjustment on clearance of the turning vehicles impeding the through traffic flow at the signalized intersections, and thereby, suggest some operational criteria for adjustment of the pedestrian green signal. In order to test such effects, the pedestrian green time was adjusted so that it could started a few seconds later than the vehicle green time during peak hours, and thereby, the turning vehicle volume not cleared at the intersection was measured by extending the time gap by 2 seconds. (In general, the pedestrian green signal turns on at the same time as the vehicle green signal.) The results of this test can be summed up as follows; first, the longer the time gap was, the turning vehicle volume not cleared from the intersection decreased more. Second, in case there existed a storage space between intersection and crosswalk the effect of the turning vehicles on the through traffic flows was minimal. Third, at the pelican, the effect of the turning vehicles on the through traffic flow was minimal due to the structure of the intersection and the phase sequence. In conclusion, it was found that the adjustment of pedestrian green signal had the effect of enhancing the intersection operation. When adjusting the pedestrian green signal, it was deemed necessary to thoroughly survey the geometric structure of the intersection and collect the data on the turning traffic volume and thereby, apply the results of analysis flexibly to each intersection.
