  • Tungsten oxide($WO_{3}$) is suitable to materials for photochromic window in the visible region. The resistivities of CdS, $WO_{3}$, and $WO_{3}$/CdS films prepared by thermal evaporation method were $4.61\times 10\^{3}$, $7.59\times10^{3}$, and $6.29\times10^{3}$ $\omega$ cm. And x-ray diffraction patterns of CdS, $WO_{3}$/CdS films showed a preferred orientation of hexagonal(002), and the monoclinic(020) structure, respectively. The optical transmission were measured that the cut-on wavelength were 510nm, 380nm for CdS and $WO_{3}$ films respectively, and the transmission spectrum of $WO_{3}$/CdS was shifted into the visible region. Photoluminescence(PL) spectra showed the two peaks at 2.8 eV and 3.2 eV for the as-grown sample($WO_{3}$/CdS ($500{\AA}$), but the other sample($WO_{3}$/CdS ($1000{\AA}$)) had a peak energy value of 2.8 eV. The photochromism of $WO_{3}$/CdS films showed that the excitation of electron-hole pairs and subsequent coloration is shifted into visible-light range. And the spectral behavior of coloration turned out to be proportional to the excited electron-hole pairs creation rate of CdS film. This result is interpreted in terms of charge carrier injection from the CdS-layer into the $WO_{3}$ films. We found a value of about 2.8 eV of $WO_{3}$/CdS film which is somewhat higher than peak energy of 2.54 eV using CBD prepared by Bechinger et. al.

  • Ultraviolet laser micromachining has increasingly been applied to the electronics industry where precision machining of high-density, multi-layer, and multi material components is in a strong demand. Due to the ever-decreasing size of electronic products such as cellular phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, etc., flexible printed circuit board (FPCB), multi-layered with polymers and metals, tends to be thicker. In present, multi-layered FPCBs are being mechanically cut with a punching die. The mechanical cutting of FPCBs causes such defects as burr on layer edges, cracks in terminals, delamination and chipping of layers. In this study, the laser cutting mechanism of FPCB was examined to solve problems related to surface debris and short-circuiting that can be caused by the photo-thermal effect. The laser cutting of PI and FCCL, which are base materials of FPCB, was carried out using a pico-second laser(355nm, 532nm) and nano-second UV laser with adjusting variables such as the average/peak power, scanning speed, cycles, gas and materials. Points which special attention should be paid are that a fast scanning speed, low repetition rate and high peak power are required for precision machining.

  • In biomedical implants and dental fields, titanium has been widely utilized for excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. However, Ti and its alloys are nonbioactive after being implanted in bone. In this study, for the purpose of improvement in biocompatibility the anodic $TiO_2$ layer on Ti-xNb alloys were fabricated by electrochemical method in phosphate solution, and the effect of Nb content on the pore size, the morphology and crystallinity of Ti oxide layer formed by the anodic oxidation method was investigated. The Ti containing Nb up to 3 wt%, 20 wt% and 40 wt% were melted by using a vacuum furnace. The sample were cut, polished, and homogenized for 24 hr at $1050^{\circ}C$ for surface roughness test and anodizing. Titanium anodic layer was formed on the specimen surface in an electrolytic solution of 1 M phosphoric acid at constant current densities ($30mA/cm^2$) by anodizing method. Microstructural morphology, crystallinity, composition, and surface roughness of oxide layer were observed by FE-SEM, XRD, EDS, and roughness tester, respectively. The structure of alloy was changed from $\alpha$-phase to $\beta$-phase with increase of Nb content. From XRD results, the structure of $TiO_2$ formed on the Ti-xNb surface was anatase, and no peaks of $Nb_2O_5$ or other Nb oxide were detected suggesting that Nb atoms are dispersed in $TiO_2$-based solid solution. Surface roughness test and SEM results, pore size formed on surface and surface roughness decreased as Nb content increased. From the line analysis results, intensity of Ti peak was high in the center of pore, whereas, intensity of O peak was high in the outside of pore center.

  • Generally, various semiconductor switching devices for power systems are used in battery chargers for electric vehicle. When these used, it takes the problems of transient-current or distortion of waveforms in power systems near by battery chargers because of harmonics and large peak-current, low power factor, etc., caused by the non-linearity of these devices. Recently, power factor control, line current peak-cut, harmonics reduction which was ignored in past is more and more important. In this paper, to solve those problems we will improve the characteristics of voltage rising and propose the high power factor converter circuit for battery chargers. Our proposed system convert commutated voltage to AC resonant wave in high frequency inverter and rectify the link voltages passed high-frequency transformer and transfer the DC voltages. Especially, the effect using these converter system can be improved very large by power factor control and we have to verify the possibilities of improvement through the experiment of Pb-Acid battery application.

  • This study evaluated the bonding property of fiber and flexural behavior of fiber reinforced concrete. Amorphous steel fiber, hooked steel fiber and polyamide fiber was used for evaluation of bonding property and flexural behavior. As a result, the hooked steel fiber was pulled out from matrix when peak stress. However amorphous steel fiber occurred shear failure because bonding strength between fiber and matrix was higher than tensile strength of fiber. Polyamide fibers occurred significantly displacement to peak stress because of elongation of fiber. After that peak stress, fiber was cut off. Amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete had a greater maximum flexural load compared with hooked steel fiber reinforced concrete because bonding performance between fiber and matrix was high and mixed population of fiber was many. However flexural stress was rapidly reduced in load-deflection curve because of shear failure of fiber. Flexural stress of hooked steel fiber reinforced concrete was slowly reduced because fiber was pulled out from the matrix. In the case of polyamide fiber reinforced concrete, flexural stress was rapidly lowered because of elongation of fiber. However flexural stress was increased again because of bonding property between polyamide fiber and matrix. The pull-out properties of the fiber and matrix has effect on the deformation capacity and flexural strength of fiber reinforced concrete.

  • High speed milling process is emerging as an important fabrication process benefits include the ability to fabricate micro and meso-scale parts out of a greater range of materials and with more varied geometry. It also enables the creation of micro and meso-scale molds for injection molding. Factors affecting surface roughness have not been studied in depth for this process. A series of experiments has been conducted in order to begin to characterize the factors affecting surface roughness and determine the range of attainable surface roughness values for the high speed milling process. It has previously been shown that run-out creates a greater problem for the dimensional accuracy of parts created by high speed milling process. And run-out also has a more significant effect on the surface quality of milled parts. The surface roughness traces reveal large peak to valley variations. This run-out is generated by spindle dynamics and tool geometry. In order to investigate the relationship between tool setting errors and surface roughness end tilted mills were used to cut aluminum samples. The results indicate that tool setting errors have significant effects on surface roughness and cutting forces.

  • This study examined the effect that the amorphous metallic fibers had on the static mechanical properties and the impact resistance of cement composites to those of hooked steel fibers. The hooked steel fiber exhibited pull-out from the matrix after the peak flexural stress was attained, while the amorphous metallic fiber was not pulled out from the matrix, but was instead cut off. In terms of impact resistance, the amorphous metallic fiber reinforced cement composite was found to be more effective at resisting cracking than the hooked steel fiber reinforced cement composite. Therefore, amorphous metallic fiber should be used in fiber reinforced cement composite materials, and for structural materials, and for protection panels.

  • Although most of existing hydration heat control methods show a certain degree of hydration heat control, generally, there are many problems as mentioned above. Therefore, our laboratory previously developed a hydration heat control method using an exposed heat pipe, which solves most of these problems and simultaneously displays excellent hydration heat control. Unfortunately, even this method had some problems such as the processing, transport, and assembly of heat pipes, and the surface treatment of a cut plane after pouring, and hardening concrete. Therefore, in this study, a hydration heat control method using an embedded pipe has been developed with the expectation that this method solves those problems in hydration heat control using an exposed heat pipe. As a result of the experiment, the peak temperature of ECHP and ICHP specimen about $4.5{\sim}6.5^{\circ}C$ than the OPC specimen and the probability of thermal cracked generated in ECHP and ICHP specimen decreased up to $13{\sim}20%$. Finally, it was confirmed in this study that the hydration heat control method using an embedded heat pipe is significantly more superior and cost effective than the existing method of an exposed one.

  • Stab threats using sharp edged or pointed Instruments could be easily encountered by police officers or soldiers. In this study, the shear thickening fluids (STF) was impregnated into Kevlar fabrics to improve the stab protection and the resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was experimentally investigated. The puncture and cut resistance were tested using a drop test machine withspike and knife indenters fabricated based on the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standard. The STF was filled with spherical $SiO_2$ particles having an average diameter of 100nm, 300nm, and 500nm. The effect of particle size on puncture and cut resistance of STF impregnated Kevlar fabrics was also investigated. The measured impact load histories showed that STF impregnation into fabric leads to withstand higher peak loads than that of neat fabrics under spike test. The test results showed that Kevlar impregnated with STF exhibit remarkable improvements in puncture resistance while it is slightly influential on the cut resistance. Specifically, particle size is the one of the dominant factors controlling fabric resistance to puncture under spike impact test.

  • There is evidence that the effect of extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ on heart rate is temperature-dependent: at $38^{\circ}C$ excess $Ca^{2+}$ induces positive chronotropic response, whereas at $30^{\circ}C$ there is no significant chronotropic effect of $Ca^{2+}$. The cause of this temperature-dependency, however, remains still unclear. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the chronotropic effect of external $Ca^{2+}$ at different temperature in the isolated rabbit atria and in the small strips of SA node cut perpendicularly to crista terminalis. In the isolated atria, the $Ca^{2+}$ effect was temperature-dependent: at $35^{\circ}C$ excess $Ca^{2+}$ evoked positive chronotropic response, while at $30^{\circ}C$ there was no significant changes in sinus rate. On the contrary, in the small SA strips external $Ca^{2+}$ induced negative chronotropic effect. At $35^{\circ}C$ changes in $Ca^{2+}$ concentration from 2 to 4, 6, and 10 mM decreased the sinus rate by $2.7{\pm}1.6%$, $11.2{\pm}3.7%$ and $23.2{\pm}8.1%$ respectively. Lowering the temperature to $30^{\circ}C$, the negative chronotropic effect of $Ca^{2+}$ became greater. With intracellular microelectrodes transmembrane potential was recorded in the small SA strips at $30^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$ and $38^{\circ}C$. As temperature increased from 30 to $38^{\circ}C$, sinus rate was accelerated by $13/min/^{\circ}C$, $APD_{50}$(action ptential duration from peak to 50% repolarization) decreased by $5\;msec/^{\circ}C$, and amplitude of action potential was slightly decreased. With an increase in $Ca^{2+}$ concentrations from 0.5 to 6 mM, overshoot increased and MDP decreased. These $Ca^{2+}$ effects on the overshoot and MDP of action potentials were not altered by temperature. But the $Ca^{2+}$ effects on the rates of diastolic depolarization, systolic depolarization and repolarization were modified by temperature. Discrpancy of the chronotropic effects of $Ca^{2+}$ between isolated atria and small SA strips was discussed.
