  • We investigated the biomechanics and characteristics of shoulder rotator muscles for professional woman volleyball players. The purpose of this study was to analyze the isokinetic peak torque and range of motion for shoulder joint rotation. We measured the strength and ROM of the internal rotation(IR) and external rotation(ER) of shoulders joint for nine professional woman Volleyball players and nine University students with Biodex and Simi-motion. 1. We measured peak torques for the shoulder joint rotator at angular velocities of 60/s and 180/s. It was found that the peak torques were significantly different between the two groups and also between the hands used. 2. At angular velocity of 60/s, IR/ER ratio of the shoulder joint was significantly different depending on the groups and the hands in use. There was a significant difference for 'Dominant side' at angular velocity of 180/s, but no significant difference for 'Non-dominant side' and the controls group. 3. Regarding the ROM of rotation of the shoulder joint group, IR was significantly different between the groups and the hands in use. 4. IR/ER ratio of the shoulder joint for Dominant side was quite different between the groups.

  • LES(Large Eddy Simulation) with a cavitation model was performed to calculate an unsteady flow for a mixed flow pump with a closed type impeller. First, the comparison between the numerical and experimental results was done to evaluate a computational accuracy. Second, the torque acting on the blade was calculated by simulation to investigate how the cavitation caused the fluctuation of torque. The absolute pressure around the leading edge on the suction side of blade surface had positive impulsive peaks in both the numerical and experimental results. The simulation showed that those peaks were caused by the cavitaion which contracted and vanished around the leading edge. The absolute pressure was predicted by simulation with -10% error. The absolute pressure around the trailing edge on the suction side of blade surface had no impulsive peaks in both the numerical and experimental results, because the absolute pressure was 100 times higher than the saturated vapor pressure. The simulation results showed that the cavitation was generated around the throat, then contracted and finally vanished. The simulated pump had five throats and cavitation behaviors such as contraction and vanishing around five throats were different from each other. For instance, the cavitations around those five throats were not vanished at the same time. When the cavitation was contracted and finally vanished, the absolute pressure on the blade surface was increased. When the cavitation was contracted around the throat located on the pressure side of blade surface, the pressure became high on the pressure side of blade surface. It caused the 1.4 times higher impulsive peak in the torque than the averaged value. On the other hand, when the cavitation was contracted around the throat located on the suction side of blade surface, the pressure became high on the suction side of blade surface. It caused the 0.4 times lower impulsive peak in the torque than the averaged value. The cavitation around the throat caused the large fluctuation in torque acting on the blade.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of quadriceps femoris flexibility exercise which would improve the degree of knee flexion range of motion, extension torque, and the activities of daily living (ADL) in elderly subjects with degenerative knee arthritis. Fourteen elderly patients (two men and twelve women) with degenerative knee arthritis participated and had a quadriceps femoris flexibility exercise intervention program in this study. The mean age of the patients was 70.00 years for men and 71.16 years for women. This study carried out the experimental study of one group pretest-posttest design, which evaluated the degree of knee flexion range of motion, extension torque, the ADL ability of the patients before and after applying the exercise intervention for five weeks. The results of this study are as follow: 1. The knee flexion ranges of motion of the patients were measured before and after the intervention and the ranges increased significantly both in the left and right knee flexion range of motion (p < 0.05). 2. The peak torque of the knee muscle, the peak torque/body weight, and average power of the patients showed significant increases in both in the left and right knee after applying the intervention (p < 0.05). 3. The intervention produced a significant reduction in pain of the patients (p < 0.05). Their functional activities of ADL improved significantly compared with before the intervention (p < 0.05). It has been shown that the quadriceps femoris flexibility exercise intervention program increased significantly the knee flexion range of motion, and extension torque, as well as an increase in performance of functional activities of ADL of the patients. Thus, the quadriceps femoris flexibility exercise should be considered as one of the therapeutic exercises for the elderly patients with degenerative knee arthritis applied.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in FT (free-torque) components between non-fatigue and fatigue conditions induced by prolonged running. Methods: Fifteen healthy runners with no previous lower-extremity fractures ($22.0{\pm}2.1$ years of age) participated in this study. Ground reaction force data were collected for the right-stance phase for 10 strides of 5 and 125-min running periods at 1,000 Hz using an instrumented force platform (instrumented dual-belt treadmills, Bertec, USA) while the subjects ran on it. The running speed was set according to the preferences of the subjects, which were determined before the experiment. FT variables were calculated from the components of the moment and force output from the force platform. A repeated-measures one-way ANOVA was used to test for significant differences between the two conditions. The alpha level for all the statistical tests was 0.05. Results: The absolute FT at the peak braking force was significantly greater after 5 mins of running than after 125 mins of running-which was regarded as a fatigued state-but there were no significant differences in the absolute peak FT or impulse between the conditions. Conclusion: The FT variables in the fatigue condition during prolonged running hardly affect the tibial stress syndrome.

  • Along with the development of power electronics and magnetic materials, permanent magnet (PM) brushless direct current (BLDC) motors are now widely used in many fields of modern industry BLDC motors have many advantages such as high efficiency, large peak torque, easy control of speed, and reliable working characteristics. However, Compared with the other electric motors without a PM, BLDC motors with a PM have inherent cogging torque. It is often a principle source of vibration, noise and difficulty of control in BLDC motors. Cogging torque which is produced by the interaction of the rotor magnetic flux and angular variation in the stator magnetic reluctance can be reduced by sinusoidal air-gap flux density waveform due to reduction of variation of magnetic reluctance. Therefore, this paper will present a design method of magnetizing system for reduction of cogging torque and low manufacturing cost of BLDC motor with isotropic bonded neodynium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets in ring type by sinusoidal air-gap flux density distribution. An analytical technique of magnetization makes use of two-dimensional finite element method (2-D FEM) and Preisach model that expresses the hysteresis phenomenon of magnetic materials in order for accurate calculation. In addition, For optimum design of magnetizing fixture, Factorial design which is one of the design of experiments (DOE) is used.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of circuit weight training(CWT) on isokinetic muscle strength and body composition in elderly. The subjects who engaged in this experiment exercised at 40$\%$ of 1-RM, 12 repetitions, followed by 15 sec as the subject moved to the each break training program which was consist of the circuit of 10 stations performed on 3 set a day, circuits 3 days a week during 10 weeks. The assessment of isokinetic factor was in concentric flexors and extensors of right and left knee joint. Tests were performed on the Cybex 770 Isokinetic Dynamometer and body composition were estimated the three parts of chest, abdomen and anterior thigh by using skinfold caliper, calculated the average and followed by Seri and Brozek way. Statistical analysis were performed using analysis of variance paired t-test, accepting level for all significant was above $\alpha$=.05 and $\alpha$=.01. Following is as a result of 10 weeks circuit weight training. 1. At the $60_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee isokinetic concentric flexors and extensors peak torque increased significantly (p < .01). 2. At the $180_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee isokinetic concentric flexors and extensors peak torque increased significantly (p < .01). 3. At the $60_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee isokenetic concentric flexors and extensors average power increased significantly(p < 0.5, p < .01) and at the $180_{\circ}$ /sec, the right extensors didn't show any statistical significant. 4. At the $60_{\circ}$ /sec, the right and left knee Isokinetic concentric flexors and extensors total work increased significantly(p < .05, p < .01) but at the $180_{\circ}$ /su right concentric flexors didn't show any statistical significant. 5. The body composition changed significantly(p < .01). These results suggest that 10 weeks circuit weight training increases the peak torque, average power, total work significantly and decreases the $\%$body fat significantly.
