  • Abstract Over 700/0 of the rural land area in Korea is mountainous and small watersheds provide most of the water resources for agricutural use. To provide an appropriate tool for the agricultural water resource development project, SNUA2, a mathematical model for simulating the physical processes governing the precipitation-runoff relationships and predicting the storm and long-term runoff quantities from the small mountainous watersheds was developed. The hydrological characteristics of small mountainous watersheds were reviewed to select appropriate theories for the simulation of the runoff processes, and a deterministic and distributed model was developed. In this, subsurface flows are routed by solving Richard's two dimensional equation, the dynamics of soil moisture contents are simulated by the consideration of phenological factors of canopy plants and surface flows are routed by solving the kinematic wave theory by numerical analysis. As a result of an application test of the model to the Sanglim watershed, peak flow rates of storm runoff were over-estimated by up to 184.2%. The occurence time of peak flow and total runoff volume of storm runoffs simulated were consistent with observed values and the annual runoff volumes were simulated in the error range of less than 5.8%.

  • In this study, three different unit hydrograph methods (NRCS, Snyder and Clark) in the HEC-HMS were compared to find better fit with the observed data in the Namgang-Dam watershed. The Sancheong, Shinan, and Changchon in Namgang-Dam watershed were selected as the study watersheds. The input data for HEC-HMS were calculated land use, digital elevation map, stream, and watershed map provided by WAter Management Information System (WAMIS). Sixty six storms from 2004 to 2011 were selected for model calibration and validation. Three unit hydrograph methods were compared with the observed data in terms of simulated runoff volume, and peak runoff for the selected storms. The results showed that the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) for the peak runoff was 0.8295~0.9999 and root mean square error (RMSE) was 0.029~0.086 mm/day for calibration stages. In the model validation, $R^2$ for the peak runoff was 0.9061~0.9916 and RMSE was 0.030~0.088 mm/day which were more accurate than calibrated data. Analysis of variance showed that there was no significant difference among the three unit hydrograph methods.

  • This study aims at the determination of the coefficienties of runoff and infiltration affecting runoff. The rating curve is more available than the peak flood runoff to determine flood control plan of flood control reservoir and the volume of hydroelectric power plant, or to make multipurpose dam. In hydrologic analysis and design, it is necessary to develop relations between precipitation and runoff, possible using some of the factors affecting runoff as parameters. In order to calculate the runoff discharge, the runoff process constituting elements are divided to the surface runoff, the subsurface runoff and the groundwater runoff. By comparing the computed hydrograph with the measured hydrograph, determinned the watershed TANK Model constant Varying the tank model constant for approximating the computed hydrograph to the measured hydrograph.

  • Using kinematic wave equation, the influence of moving rainstorms to runoff was analysised with a focus on watershed shapes and rainfall distribution types. Watershed shapes used are the oblong, square and elongated shape, and the distribution types of moving storms used are uniform, advanced and intermediate type. The runoff hydrographs according to the rainfall distribution types were simulated and the characteristics were explored for the storms moving down, up and cross the watershed with various velocity. And the hydrographs were compared in the case of varing the rainstorm intensity and varing the rainstorm length in order to make the same total runoff volume. When the rainstorm intensity was varied the shape, peak time and peak runoff of a runoff hydrograph are significantly influenced by spatial and temporal variability in rainfall and watershed shapes. The peak time of down and upstream moving strorms appeared latest in the case of the elongated shape basin, meanwhile at cross stream moving storms, the peak time of elongated shape basin is earlier than the others. For storms moving downstream peak time was more delayed than for other storm direction in the case of elongated watershed. The runoff volume and time base of the hydrograph decreased with the increasing storm speed.

  • Detention pond has an important role in peak flow reduction to mitigate flood damage. Design of detention pond is accomplished through the preliminary stage, and design stage in general. New development projects produce increased peak flow and flow amounts. In this case it is necessary to design the detention pond easily and simply. A simplified design method of the detention pond is suggested in this study. Used design variables are peak flow ratio(${\alpha}$) and storage ratio($S_r$). ${\alpha}$ is the peak flow ratio of before and after development of the basin. $S_r$ is a ratio of storage volume to total runoff volume. Applicability of the proposed method was also proved. The simple procedure of detention pond design is proposed in this study.

  • The optimum volume of sediment settling pond is determined by the maximum rainfall and surface peak rate runoff from crop field. Based on analysis of measured rainfall and runoff data, it was found that rainfall intensity of 2 mm/min would result in peak rate runoff from the agricultural field of study area. Optimum pond volume under various slope scenarios were determined using the WEPP model calibrated with measured flow and sediment data for the study watershed. For the agricultural field with the slope of 7 % and area of $2,600\;m^2$ at the study area, at least $6.4\;m^3$ of sediment settling pond is needed as shown in this study. The results presented in this study could be used as a guide in designing appropriate volume of sediment settling pond at highland agricultural areas because both very detailed field measurement and calibrated WEPP model results are used in the analysis.

  • In terms of flood management, it is necessary to analyze quantitative rainfall and runoff from a spatial and temporal perspective and to analyze runoff for heavy rainfall events that are concentrated within a short period of time. The simulation and analysis results of rainfall-runoff models vary depending on the type and input data. In particular, rainfall data is an important factor, so calculating areal mean rainfall is very important. In this study, the areal mean rainfall of the Samcheok Osipcheon(Riv.) watersheds located in the mountainous terrain was calculated using the Arithmetic Mean Method, Thiessen's Weighting Method, and the Isohyetal Method, and the rainfall-runoff results were compared by applying the distributional model S-RAT and the lumped model HEC-HMS. The results of the temporal transferability study showed that the combination of the distributional model and the Isohyetal Method had the best statistical performance with MAE of 64.62 m3/s, RMSE of 82.47 m3/s, and R2 and NSE of 0.9383 and 0.8547, respectively. It is considered that this study was properly analyzed because the peak flood volume occurrence time of the observed and simulated flows is within 1 hour. Therefore, the results of this study can be used for frequency analysis in the future, which can be used to improve the accuracy of simulating peak flood volume and peak flood occurrence time in mountainous watersheds with steep slopes.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the drain runoff characteristics from one paddy field, and to provide the basic data required for the determination of flood discharge and unit drainage water for drainage improvement and farmland consolidation. For this purpose, under the assumption that drain discharge from paddy field was similar to outflow of reservoir, runoff model based on storage equation was applied to the experimental field, and simulated results were compared to the measured discharge at weir point. To estimate effective storage volume of paddy field with water depth, 4 regression formula were examined such as linear, exponential, power, and combined. From the observed runoff characteristics, it was shown to be 3.3~16.3${\ell}$/sec in weir discharge, 57.2~98% in runoff ratio, and relative error of simulated result was 3.0~39.4%, 8.5 ~56.0 % for peak flow and runoff ratio, respectively. Curve number by SCS method was calculated as mean value of 96.4 using measured rainfall and runoff data, it was considered relatively high because paddy field has generally flooding depth contrary to the upland watershed area.

  • For a given watershed that consists of urbanized areas, it was essential to predict how the runoff characteristics, such as runoff peak and volume, and travel time, change with time far planning and designing various kinds of hydraulic facilities with given recurrence interval. In this study, Mushim stream watershed was simulated using HEC-HMS model to get runoff characteristics of an urbanization basin. The results was showed that runoff was increased $1794.20{\sim}2104.65\;m^{3}/s$> and $1751.90{\sim}1961.30\;m^{3}/s$ according to the increased of rainfall and CN value recurrence interval in years. Observed storm was increased $497.91{\sim}581.71\;m^{3}/s$ and $506.57{\sim}537.01\;m^{3}/s$ for increased of CN value and impervious area. This paper is also possible to evaluate the effect of urbanization quantitatively.
