  • To estimate the structural seismic demand, some methods are based on an equivalent linear system such as the Capacity Spectrum Method, the N2 method and the Equivalent Linearization method. Another category, widely investigated, is based on displacement correction such as the Displacement Coefficient Method and the Coefficient Method. Its basic concept consists in converting the elastic linear displacement of an equivalent Single Degree of Freedom system (SDOF) into a corresponding inelastic displacement. It relies on adequate modifying or reduction coefficient such as the inelastic deformation ratio which is usually developed for systems with known ductility factors ($C_{\mu}$) and ($C_R$) for known yield-strength reduction factor. The present paper proposes a rational approach which estimates this inelastic deformation ratio for SDOF bilinear systems by rigorous nonlinear analysis. It proposes a new inelastic deformation ratio which unifies and combines both $C_{\mu}$ and $C_R$ effects. It is defined by the ratio between the inelastic and elastic maximum lateral displacement demands. Three options are investigated in order to express the inelastic response spectra in terms of: ductility demand, yield strength reduction factor, and inelastic deformation ratio which depends on the period, the post-to-preyield stiffness ratio, the yield strength and the peak ground acceleration. This new inelastic deformation ratio ($C_{\eta}$) is describes the response spectra and is related to the capacity curve (pushover curve): normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), natural period (T), peak ductility factor (${\mu}$), and the yield strength reduction factor ($R_y$). For illustrative purposes, instantaneous ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor for a SDOF system subject to various recorded motions (El-Centro 1940 (N/S), Boumerdes: Algeria 2003). The method accuracy is investigated and compared to classical formulations, for various hysteretic models and values of the normalized yield strength coefficient (${\eta}$), post-to-preyield stiffness ratio (${\alpha}$), and natural period (T). Though the ductility demand and yield strength reduction factor differ greatly for some given T and ${\eta}$ ranges, they remain take close when ${\eta}>1$, whereas they are equal to 1 for periods $T{\geq}1s$.

  • Purpose: To verify accuracy of respiratory gated proton therapy by measuring and analyzing proton beam delivered when respiratory gated proton therapy is being performed in our institute. Materials and Methods: The plan data of 3 patients who took respiratory gated proton therapy were used to deliver proton beam from proton therapy system. The manufactured moving phantom was used to apply respiratory gating system to reproduce proton beam which was partially irradiated. The key characteristics of proton beam, range, spreat-out Bragg peak (SOBP) and output factor were measured 5 times and the same categories were measured in the continuous proton beam which was not performed with respiratory gating system. Multi-layer ionization chamber was used to measure range and SOBP, and Scanditronix Wellhofer and farmer chamber was used to measure output factor. Results: The average ranges of 3 patients (A, B, C), who had taken respiratory gated proton therapy or not, were (A) 7.226, 7.230, (B) 12.216, 12.220 and (C) 19.918, 19.920 $g/cm^2$ and average SOBP were (A) 4.950, 4.940, (B) 6.496, 6.512 and (C) 8.486, 8.490 $g/cm^2$. And average output factor were (A) 0.985, 0.984 (B) 1.026, 1.027 and (C) 1.138, 1.136 cGy/MU. The differences of average range were -0.004, -0.004, -0.002 $g/cm^2$, that of SOBP were 0.010, -0.016, -0.004 $g/cm^2$ and that of output factor were 0.001, -0.001, 0.002 cGy/MU. Conclusion: It is observed that the range, SOBP and output factor of proton beam delivered when respiratory gated proton therapy is being performed have the same beam quality with no significant difference compared to the proton beam which was continuously irradiated. Therefore, this study verified the quality of proton beam delivered when respiratory gated proton therapy and confirmed the accuracy of proton therapy using this.

  • Polymeric meterials that are used for noise and vibration damper in wood/polymer/wood sandwich composites, must have a high loss factor(tan ${\delta}$), and at the same time the storage modulus(E) of $5{\times}10^7$ to $10^9$ dyne/$cm^2$ must withstand over a wide temperature and frequency ranges. In this study, the series of epoxy resinlpolyacrylate interpenetrating polymer networks(IPNs) were synthesized by simultaneous polymerization. Their dynamic tensile properties were measured at 110Hz using Rheovibron instrument. Composite damping factor(tan ${\delta}_c$) and dynamic bending modulus($E_c,\;E_^{\prime\prime}c$) of wood/polymer/wood sandwich composites were measured at 110Hz using a Rheovibron in bending mode of vibration. These dynamic tensile studies indicated that cured epoxy resin/polyacrylates IPNs were semicompatible in the sense that both the shifting of T($E^{\prime\prime}_{max}$) or T(tan ${\delta}_{max}$) and the broadening of glass transition temperature range were observed. Especially, the cured Epikote871/P(n-BMA) IPNs of composition 70/30 to 50/50 showed a relatively high tan a and appropriate E' value over a wide temperature range; consequently the tan a e curves of wood/IPNs/wood sandwich composites was broadened over a wide temperature range.

  • Gametogenesis, reproductive cycle, condition factor, and meat weight rate of the surf clam, Tresus Keenae were studied by histological observations and morphometric data based on the samples which have been collected from the south coast of Korea, from January 1995 to February 1996. The annual ranges of the mean seawater temperature and specific gravity in habitat of the surf clam were $4.9\~24.9^{\circ}C$ and 1.0210$\~$1.0266, respectively. Monthly changes in the condition factor showed in a wide range from 0.2381 to 0.2827, began to increase in January and reached the first maximum (0.2827) in April. And then the value rapidly decreased in June, thereafter, reached the second peak (0.2812) in August. The condition factor of this species showed the two peaks, and gonadal development reached sexually mature and ripe conditions during the period of these two peaks. The meat weight rate ranged from $38.0\%$ to $46.4\%$, and its change showed a similar tendency with the condition factor. The reproductive cycle of this species can be divided into five successive stages: in both sex, multiplicative (December to January, July to August), growing (January to February, September to October), mature (February to April, September to November), spawning (April to June, September to November), and degenerative and resting stage (May to July, November to January).

  • The concentration of atmospheric mercury(Hg0 and relevent environmental parameters that include both meteorological and criteria pollutant data were dtermined at hourly intervals during two field campaigns covering the periods of September 1997 and May/June 1998. The mean concentrations of Hg for the two study periods were computed as 3.94 and 3.43ngm-3, respectively. Through a separation of these data into both daytime and nighttime periods, we further analyzed diurnal variation patterns for Hg between two different seasons. Using our Hg data sets, we were able to recognize two contrasting diurnal variation patterns of Hg between two diffeerent seasons that can be characterized as: (1) the occurrences of peak Hg concentration during daytime(fall0 and (2) slight reductions in daytime Hg concentration relative to nighttiime Hg data(summer). To study the systematic differences in diurnal patterns between two different seasons, we analyzed Hg data in terms of different statistical approaches such as correlation(and linear regression0 and factor analysis. Results of these analyses consistently indicated that different mechanisms were responsible for controlling the daytime distribution patterns of Hg. The variation of boundary layer conditions betwen day/night periods may have been important in introducing the relative reduction in daytime Hg levels during summer. However, when the relationship between Hg and concurrently determined O3 is concerned, these differences are unlikely to be an effective sink mechanism within the ranges of ozone concentrations determined concurrently during this study, regardless of season. To further provide the general account for short-term variations in Hg distribution data, we should be able to describe the various factors underlying its sink mechanism.

  • To estimate design floods for hydraulic structures, statistical methods has been used in the analysis of rainfall data. However, due to the lack of rainfall data in some regions, it is difficult to apply the statistical methods for estimation of design rainfall. In addition, increased uncertainty of design rainfall arising from the limited rainfall data can become an important factor for determining the design floods. The main objective of this study was to assess the uncertainty of the future design floods under RCP (representative concentration pathways) scenarios using a bootstrap technique. The technique was used in this study to quantify the uncertainty in the estimation of the future design floods. The Yongdang watershed in South Korea, 2,873 ha in size, was selected as the study area. The study results showed that the standard errors of the basin of Yongdang reservoir were calculated as 2.0~6.9 % of probable rainfall. The standard errors of RCP4.5 scenario were higher than the standard errors of RCP8.5 scenario. As the results of estimation of design flood, the ranges of peak flows considered uncertainty were 2.3~7.1 %, and were different each duration and scenario. This study might be expected to be used as one of guidelines to consider when designing hydraulic structures.

  • Studies have been carried out on the fabrication of PPy/GC and PPy/Pt electrode modified with polypyrrole film and determination of Cr(VI) by using 3-electrode system with modified electrodes. Modified electrodes were able to easily fabricated by cyclic voltammetry scanned from +1.0V to -1.0V(vs. Ag/AgCl) at 50 mV/sec. Film thickness could be controlled at same condition by the number of cycling up to 26 times. Reduction behaviour of Cr(VI) at PPy/GC electrode could be seen at wide potential ranges from +0.6V to -0.5V(vs. Ag/AgCl), and maximum reduction peak potential of the ion was observed at -0.25V(vs.Ag/AgCl). Calibration graph at its potential was linear from 0.1 ppm to 80.O ppm. Slope factor and relative coefficient were 1.75 mA/ppm and 0.998, respectively. Reduction behaviour of Cr(VI) at PPy/Pt electrode was similar to PPy/GC electrode, Calibration graph was linear from l.0 ppm to 60.0 ppm. Slope factor and relative coefficient were 0.5mA/ppm and 0.923, respectively. But PPy/GC modified electrode had about 3 times higher sensitivity than PPy/Pt modified electrode. Reduction behaviour of Cu(II), As(IlI), Pb(II), and Cd(II) couldn't be seen at PPy/GC electrode,Its metals had not lnterfered with Cr (VI) determination.

  • Some statistical characteristics of deepwater waves along the Korean coast have been investigated using various sources of wave measurement and hindcasting data. For very large waves comparable to design waves, it is recommended to use the average value of the empirical formulas proposed by Shore Protection Manual in 1977 and by Goda in 2003 for the relation between significant wave height and period. The standard deviation of significant wave periods non-dimensionalized with respect to the mean value for a certain significant wave height varies between 0.04 and 0.21 with a typical value of 0.1 depending upon different regions and different ranges of significant wave heights. The mean and standard deviation of the principal deepwater wave direction are presented at the 106 coastal grid points along the Korean coast. For relatively large waves, the probability density function of the directional spreading parameter $s_{max}$ is expressed as a lognormal distribution. The most suitable frequency spectrum in the Korean coast is the TMA spectrum. The probability density function of the peak enhancement factor $\gamma$ is also expressed as a lognormal distribution, with its mean value of 2.94, which is close to the value in the North Sea.
