  • Elastomeric O-rings have been the most common seals due to their excellent sealing capacity, and availability in costs and sizes. One of the critical applications of O-ring seals is solid rocket motor joint seal where the operating hot gas must be sealed during the combustion. This has long been a design issue to avoid the system failure. For laterally constrained, squeezed and pressurized condition, deformed shape of O-ring was measured by computed tomography method and CCD laser sensor, compared with numerical calculations. As clearance gap changes, sealing performance had been evaluated on peak contact stresses at top, bottom and side contact surfaces. As clearance gap increases, peak contact stresses and contact widths in top and side contact surfaces increase, and the asymmetry of stress distributions is promoted due to pressure increase. It is suggested that peak stress of bottom contact surface can be approximated by simple superposition of peak ones due to squeeze and pressure. Under pressurized condition, sealing performance is dependent on not peak stresses of bottom and side contact surfaces but that of top.

  • In this study, the effect of stem-end design on contact pressure and stress distribution in revision TKR was investigated using finite element method. The finite element model of tibia, including the cortical bone, the cancellous bone and canal, was developed based on CT images. The implant models with various stem lengths, diameters, friction coefficients, and press-fit effects were considered. The results showed that the longer stem length, the stronger press-fit, the bigger stem diameter, and the higher friction coefficient increased both peak contact pressure and Von-Mises stress distributions. The results supported the clinical hypothesis that peak contact pressure and stress are related to the stem end pain. The results of this study will be useful to design the stem and reduce the end-of-stem pain in revision TKR.

  • The research described in this paper was aimed toward improving the understanding of the interaction of tire inflation pressure and the soil-tire interface stresses. A three-directional stress transducer was developed to measure stress distribution on undertread for a tractor tire. The transducer can directly measure three-directional stresses (normal stress, tangental stress and lateral stress and lateral stress) simultaneously and has both strong structure and high sensitivity, which is not changed by the abrasion of the detecting plate. Measurements of soil-undertread interface stresses were made at tire center on undertread on a 12.4-R24 radial tractor tire opeated at three combinations of a dynamic load (11.8kN) and three inflation pressures (59kPa, 108kPa and 157kPa). These measurements showed that as inflation pressure increased, the soil-undertread interface stresses increased. The results of three stresses comparisons were shown that the peak normal stresses were considerably higher than the tangential peak stresses and the peak lateral stresses.

  • The sealing performance of an elastomeric O-ring seal with a temperature gradient has been analyzed for the contact stress behaviors that develop between the O-ring seal and the housing surfaces with which it comes into contact in the dovetail groove. The leakage of an O-ring seal will occur when the pressure differential across the seal just exceeds the initial peak contact stress. The contact stress behaviors that develop in compressed O-rings, in common case of restrained geometry (grooved), are investigated using the finite element method. The FE analysis includes material hyperelasticity and axisymmetry The computed FEM results show that the contact stress behaviors are related to a compression rate and a temperature gradient between the vacuum chamber with a dovetail groove and the contacting plate with a cooling jacket.

  • This paper focuses on the conformal contact problem. A typical example of conformal contact is the contact between a pin and hole. In particular, this paper focuses on the condition for assuming a contact stress field to be a Hertzian pressure profile by using well-known classical solutions associated with Hertzian contact. Persson first developed the conformal contact analysis method around half a century ago, but there have been no significant improvements since then. The present research also adopted this method, but developed new solutions from the viewpoint of application to structural design. The analysis began with a comparison between Persson°Øs conformal contact stress and the Hertzian stress fields. The next step was to check the differences in the normalized stress values of both. This study used the tolerance for the difference in the peak stresses of Persson°Øs solution and the Hertz solution to validate the Hertzian assumption. This gave the range for the difference in radii of the pin and hole when the contact force and mechanical properties of the material are specified. The results showed that, at a tolerance of 5%, the Hertzian assumption is valid if half of the contact angle is less than 35°ý. In addition, the Hertzian assumption holds even for a relatively long contact length, in contrast to the general incomplete contact problem. This paper discusses these results along with other aspects of the application to the design.

  • In order to investigate the effects of geometry factors such as a roil diameter ratio and backup roll crown of the stress concentration factor on the edge of backup roil end, 3-dimensional FEM analyses of stress at the contact of backup roll and work roll assembled in a 4-high strip mill were carried out, It was made clear that the peak stress at the edge is about 2 to 3 times of that at the longitudinal center of the roll barrel and the peak stress proportionally increase with decreasing the ratio of backup roll diameter to work roll diameter Furthermore a crowning on the backup roll is effective to decrease the maximum edge stress.
