Assessment of Metal Pollution of Road-Deposited Sediments and Marine Sediments Around Gwangyang Bay, Korea (광양만 내 도로축적퇴적물 및 해양퇴적물의 금속 오염 평가)

  • In this study, heavy metal in road-deposited sediments (RDS) and marine sediment around Gwangyang Bay area have been investigated to assess the pollution status of metals and to understand the environmental impact of RDS as a potential source of metal pollution. Zn concentration for <63 ㎛ size fraction was the highest (2,982 mg/kg), followed by Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu, As, Cd, and Hg. Metal concentrations in RDS increased with decreasing particle size and relatively higher concentrations were observed around the metal waste and recycling facilities. For particle size in RDS smaller than 125 ㎛, EF values indicated that Zn was very high enrichment and Cr, Cd, Pb were significant enrichment. The concentrations of metals in marine sediments were mostly below the TEL value of sediment quality guidelines of Korea. However, the Zn concentrations has increased by 30~40% compared to 2010 year. The amounts of Zn, Cd and Pb in less than 125 ㎛ fraction where heavy metals can be easily transported by stormwater runoff accounted for 54% of the total RDS. The study area was greatly affected by Zn pollution due to corrosion of Zn plating materials by traffic activity as well as artificial activities related to the container logistics at Gwangyang container terminal. The fine particles of RDS are not only easily resuspended by wind and vehicle movement, but are also transported to the surrounding environments by runoff. Therefore, further research is needed on the adverse effects on the environment and ecosystem.

The Dietary, Blood and Urinary Levels of Lead, Iron and Copper in Self Selected Dietary Rural People (일상식이를 섭취하는 일부 농촌 성인 남녀의 식이, 혈액 및 뇨중의 납, 철분, 구리 수준)

  • This study was carried out to estimate intake level of Pb, Fe, Cu in rural area of Korea(12 males and 18 females). Analyses for the nutritional status of the record, duplicated diet collections, 24-hour urine collections, and venous blood sampling before measuring of blood pressure. The mean age and blood pressure of the subjects were 45.8$\pm$11.1years and 117.5$\pm$22.2/80.8$\pm$15.6mmHe in males, and 41.9$\pm$11.0years, 110.0$\pm$ 11.9/73.9$\pm$8.5mmHg in females, respectively. In respect to both males and females, mean BMI were 22.0$\pm$2.3, 23.1$\pm$3.0, mean Rohrer index were 131.8$\pm$14.8, 142.4$\pm$20.2 and mean skinfold thickness were 12.4$\pm$5.9mm, 25.3$\pm$7.4mm, respectively. The daily mean intakes of Pb, Fe, and Cu estimated for 3 days were 277.2$\pm$111.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/day, 12.7$\mu\textrm{g}$ 7.6mg/day, and 3.0$\pm$1.4mg/day in males and 192.0$\pm$72.4$\mu\textrm{g}$/day, 13.3$\pm$5.8mg/day, and 3.7 $\pm$1.7mg/day in females, respectively. The mean concentrations of serum Pb, Fe, Cu were 11.0$\pm$2.0$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 131.1$\pm$42.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 120.3$\pm$25.7$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl in males and 9.0$\pm$1.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 112.2$\pm$ 35.9$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl, 117.3$\pm$17.9$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl in females, respectively. The mean levels of Hb and Hct were 15.1$\pm$1.1g/dl, 45.2$\pm$3.3% in males and 13.1$\pm$0.8g/dl, 39.8$\pm$2.6% in females, respectively. The 24-hour urinary excretions of Pb, Fe, Cu were 35.5$\pm$10.0$\mu\textrm{g}$/day, 0.16$\pm$0.12mg/day, 60.12$\pm$0.02$\mu\textrm{g}$/day in males, and 25.3$\pm$11.0$\mu\textrm{g}$/day, 0.24$\pm$0.20mg/day, 70.07$\pm$0.03$\mu\textrm{g}$/day in females, respectively. In conclusion, the Pb intake in self selected diet of this subjects was not in the level that antagonized to Fe and Cu metabolism seriously.

  • As supply chain management becomes a key factor in the sustainable growth of the industry, securing minerals at the national or corporate level is becoming important. Depending on the industrial structure, the economic status of each minerals is different and the supply risk is different In this study, to examine the economic status of minerals, an index that can quantify the Industrial Economic Importance by minerals was developed and calculated by reflecting the demand structure and cost weight of each industry. As a result, Li, Al, Cu, Si, Co, Ni, etc. were evaluated as having high industrial importance in Korea. In addition, by industry, Al, Cu, Zn, and Pb for primary metal manufacturing, general machinery, assembly metals,Sn, Ba, Ti, Si and Ga for precision equipment, Si and Ga for semiconductors, and Li, Ni, Co, Si, etc. for electronic components had high industrial importance. Such as Europe and the United States, in order to select Critical-minerals, Korea will need to analyze the economic impact on the domestic industry as well as the risks of supply chain by minerals.

Ground Water Pollution Status of Agricultural Water Source of Greenhouse Area in Gyeongnam (경남 시설원예지 농업용 지하수의 수질 현황)

  • To examine water pollution status of agricultural water source of greenhouse area in Gyeongnam, the ground water quality was investigated six times at five areas in Gyeongnam from October in 1995 to March in 1996. pH of ground water were generally in the range of 5.9∼7.6. But a site in Changnyeong area was out of the range In 6.0∼8.5 which is water quality standard for agriculture. COD of ground water was below 2.8mg/l. NH4+-N contents in ground water was very low in all areas and the average of NO3'-N contents in Changnyeong and Chinju area was high with 13.2 and 11.5mg/l respectively. Hardness, SO42- and EC of ground water In Hmm were higher than any other area. Fe and Mn contents of ground water in Kimhae were higher than any other area with 7.17 and 0.95wt, respectively. Heavy metals such as Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn of ground waker were below water Quality standard far agriculture but some sites were over. Between COD and SS in ground water were not correlated with rInG.338,'but between COD and NH4+, -N were positively correlated. And EC was positively correlated with Ca2+, Mg2+ and SO42-. Ground water pollution status of agricultural water source of greenhouse area in Gyeongnam was genrrally high in order of Sacheon < Chinju < Hmn < Kimhae < Changnyeong.

Fractionation of Heavy Metals and Correlation with Their Contents in Rice Plant Grown in Paddy near Smelter Area (제련소 인근 논 토양 중 중금속 형태 분류 및 수도체중 중금속 함량과의 상관성)

  • The contents of heavy metals in soil near the Janghang smelter area were observed to understand present status and relationship between their fraction and the absorption by rice. The soil samples were taken from the eight sites of the paddy fields in 1982 and 1990, and analysis on heavy metals including Cd, Zn, Cu and Pb was performed. The results were as follows: Total contents of heavy metals in the samples of 1990 were higher than those of 1982. The order of increasing ratio was Cu > Zn > Pb > Cd and the variation of Cd content by sequential differente extracting was residual > exchangeable > dilute acid-extractable fractions and its increasing range was from 38 to 71% during nine years. The ratio of immobile heavy metals bound within an oxide or silicate matrix of Fe-Mn oxide bound and residual in surface soil was that Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn were 31.65, 42.22, 76.57 and 79.49%, respectively, and their mobile ratios of exchangeable, dilute acid-extractable and organically bound were more than 20.28%. Those of mobile Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn were 68.35, 55.78, 23.43 and 20.28%, respectively. Correlation between the heavy metal contents in surface soil and those in tissue of rice plant, such as leaf blade, leaf sheath, stem and panicle axis, were significant, but were not significant in subsurface soil. The dilute acid-extractable and organically bound fractions of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in surface soil were more significantly correlated with those in tissues of paddy rice.

A Study on the Status and Improvement of Double Pipe System in Apartment Buildings (공동주택 이중관 공법의 현안 분석 및 개선 연구)

  • Double pipe system in which PB pipe is inserted in CD pipe buried in the concrete slab is widely used for cold and hot water supplies in apartment housings. The system, however becomes complicated and the overlaying pipes in the concrete slab weaken the compressive strength of the slab. Also, insufficient insulation increases energy loss. In this work, the problems of the double pipe system are studied and plans A, B, and C are suggested for improvement. In terms of compressive strength of the concrete slab, plan A(total pipe length 73 m) was the weakest and plan B(2 m) was the strongest. Energy loss of plan A was the largest with 558.9 W and plan B was the lowest with 220.7 W. However, considering the combined effect of strength and heat loss, plan C becomes the best choice, which retains the advantage of the double pipe system.

Distribution and Contamination Status of Trace Metals in Surface Sediments of Shellfish Farming Areas in Yeoja and Gangjin Bays, Korea (남해안 패류양식해역(여자만과 강진만)의 퇴적물내 미량금속 분포특성 및 오염도 평가)

  • The concentrations of trace metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn) were determined in 49 surface sediment samples collected in Yeoja and Gangjin Bays on the south coast of Korea, which contain many shellfish farms, in order to assess the contamination level and to understand the spatial distribution of trace metals. The average metal concentrations in the surface sediments of both bays decreased in the order Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > As > Cd > Hg. There were no differences in metal concentrations between shellfish farms and reference sites. The metal concentrations were significantly higher in Gangjin Bay than in Yeoja Bay. Notably, the Cu, Cd, and Hg concentrations were nearly twice as high in Gangjin Bay as in Yeoja Bay. A multivariate analysis showed a strong correlation among Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, and Cr in the sediments of both bays, implying that the metal concentrations in the sediments in the study area were mainly dependent on natural processes, such as crustal components and diagenesis. Based on the geoaccumulation index and marine sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the surface sediments in Yeoja and Gangjin Bays are not polluted by trace metals.

Health Risks to Children and Adults Residing in Riverine Environments where Surficial Sediments Contain Metals Generated by Active Gold Mining in Ghana

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of metal pollution in the sediment from rivers, lakes, and streams in active gold mining districts in Ghana. Two hundred and fifty surface sediment samples from 99 locations were collected and analyzed for concentrations of As, Hg, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Mn using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Metal concentrations were then used to assess the human health risks to resident children and adults in central tendency exposure (CTE) and reasonable maximum exposure (RME) scenarios. The concentrations of Pb, Cd, and As were almost twice the threshold values established by the Hong Kong Interim Sediment Quality Guidelines (ISQG). Hg, Cu, and Cr concentrations in sediment were 14, 20, and 26 times higher than the Canadian Freshwater Sediment Guidelines for these elements. Also, the concentrations of Pb, Cu, Cr, and Hg were 3, 11, 12, and 16 times more than the Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) sediment guideline values. The results of the human health risk assessment indicate that for ingestion of sediment under the central tendency exposure (CTE) scenario, the cancer risks for child and adult residents from exposure to As were $4.18{\times}10^{-6}$ and $1.84{\times}10^{-7}$, respectively. This suggests that up to 4 children out of one million equally exposed children would contract cancer if exposed continuously to As over 70 years (the assumed lifetime). The hazard index for child residents following exposure to Cr(VI) in the RME scenario was 4.2. This is greater than the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) threshold of 1, indicating that adverse health effects to children from exposure to Cr(VI) are possible. This study demonstrates the urgent need to control industrial emissions and the severe heavy metal pollution in gold mining environments.

  • Objectives: This survey was designed to conduct the first nationwide dietary exposure assessment on hazardous substances including the intakes of functional food and herbal medicine. In this paper, we introduced the survey design and the results of the dietary exposure status and internal exposure levels of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). Methods: We selected 4867 subjects of all ages throughout Korea. We conducted a food survey, dietary survey, biomonitoring, and health survey. Results: Pb and Cd were the highest (median value) in the seaweed ($94.2{\mu}g/kg$ for Pb; $594{\mu}g/kg$ for Cd), and Hg was the highest in the fish ($46.4{\mu}g/kg$). The dietary exposure level (median value) of Pb was $0.14{\mu}g/kg$ body weight (bw)/d, $0.18{\mu}g/kg$ bw/d for Cd, and $0.07{\mu}g/kg$ bw/d for Hg. Those with a blood Pb level of less than $5.00{\mu}g/dL$ (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reference value for those 1 to 5 years of age) were 99.0% of all the subjects. Those with a blood Cd level with less than $0.30{\mu}g/L$ (German Federal Environmental Agency, reference value for non-smoking children) were 24.5%. For those with a blood Hg level with less than $5.00{\mu}g/L$ (human biomonitoring I, references value for children and adults, German Federal Environmental Agency) was 81.0 % of all the subjects. Conclusions: The main dietary exposure of heavy metals occurs through food consumed in a large quantity and high frequency. The blood Hg level and dietary exposure level of Hg were both higher than those in the European Union.

Assessment of Contamination and Sources Identification of Heavy Metals in Stream Water and Sediments around Industrial Complex (산업단지 유역 하천수와 퇴적물 내 중금속 오염도 평가 및 기원 추적 연구)

  • Heavy metals in stream water and sediments around industrial complex were studied in order to assess the contamination and to identify the potential source of metals. High variability has been observed for both dissolved and particulate phases in stream water with coefficient of variation (CV) ranging from 1.3 to 2.8. The highest metal concentrations in both phases were observed in Gunja for Ni and Cu, in Jungwang for Zn and Pb and in Shiheung for Cd, respectively. These results indicate that the different metal sources could be existing. The concentrations of the heavy metals in sediments decreased in the order of Cu>Zn>Pb>Cr>Ni>As>Cd>Hg, with mean of 2,549, 1,742, 808, 539, 163, 17.1, 5.8, $0.07mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Mean of metal concentrations(except for As) in sediments showed the highest values at Shiheung stream comparing with other streams. In sediments, the percent exceedance of class II grade that metal may potentially harmful impact on benthic organism for Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb was about 57%, 62%, 84%, 60%, 68%, 81% for all stream sediments, respectively. Sediments were classified as heavily to extremely polluted for Cu and Cd, heavily polluted for Zn and Pb, based on the calculation of Igeo value. About 59% and 35% of sediments were in the categories of "poor" and "very poor" pollution status for heavy metals. Given the high metal concentrations, industrial wastes and effluents, having high concentrations of most metals originated from the manufacture and use of metal products in this region, might be discharged into the stream through sewer outlet. The streams receive significant amounts of industrial waste from the industrial facilities which is characterized by light industrial complexes of approximately 17,000 facilities. Thus, the transport of metal loads through streams is an important pathway for metal pollution in Shihwa Lake.
