  • on-line system for preconcentration and separation of lead(II) is presented. The method is based on the complex formation of Pb(II) with adsorbed Methyl thymol blue on activated carbon. The conditions of preparing the solid phase reagent and of quantitative recovery of Pb(II) from diluted solutions, such as acidity of aqueous phase, solid phase capacity, and flow variables were studied as well as effect of potential interfering ions. After preconcentration step, the metal ions are eluted automatically by 5 ml of 0.5 M HNO3 solution and the lead ions content was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Under the optimum conditions, the lead ions in aqueous samples were separated and preconcentrated about 1000-fold by the column. The detection limit was 0.001 g mL-1. Lead has been determined in river and tap water samples, with recovery of 98 to 102%.

  • Although the demands for the dredging work have been increasing due to social and industrial reasons including national plan for restoration of four major rivers, environmental standards or management guidelines for the dredged river sediment are limited. The suggested environmental standard for the beneficial use of dredged river sediment consists of two levels, recyclable and concern, and includes eight contaminants such as metals and organic contaminants. The systematic approach to remediate dredged river sediment is also suggested. The system consists of both washing and stabilization processes with continuous multi particle separation. In the early stage, the sediments are separated into two particle sizes. The coarse-grained sediment over 0.075 mm, generally decontaminated with less trouble, follows normal washing steps and is sent for recycling. The fine-grained sediments under 0.075 mm are separated again at 0.025 mm. The particles bigger than this second separation point are treated in two ways, advanced washing for highly contaminated sediments and stabilization for less. The lab test results show that birnessite and apatite are most effective stabilizing agents among tested for Cd and Pb. The most fine residues, down-sized by continuous particle separation, are finally sent for disposal. The system is tested for metals in this study, but is expected to be effective for organic contaminants included in the environmental standard, such as PAH and PCE. The feasibility test on the field site will be followed.

  • The elution behavior of polystyrenes(PS), polymethylmethacrylates (PMMA), polybutadienes(PB), PS-PMMA(SM) block copolymers and PS-PB star shaped copolymers on the cross-linked polystyrene gels was studied. An interpretation was proposed for the plots of log hydrodynamic volume versus retention volume of solutes in the mobile phases such as tetrahydrofuran, toluene, chloroform, methylene chloride and tetrahydrofuran-cyclohexane mixture. In order to predict the retention of solutes from their physical properties, multiple stepwise regression analysis was applied to obtain the correlation. The distribution coefficients($K_p$) of solute-gel interactions in GPC for homopolymers and PS copolymers were also obtained in terms of network-limited separation mechanism. In the cases of PS and PB, $K_p$ values approach unity, while $K_p$ values for PMMA decrease as MW increase in the good solvent, but in poor solvent, $K_p$ values increase as MW increase. $K_p$ values of PS copolymers are dependent on their MW and composition, therefore, morohology of SM block copolymer is predicted to be random phase. • Antarctic Environmental Monitoring Handbook' was published by COMNAP/SCAR in 2000. The standardized method described in this handbook is recommended for monitoring of antarctic environment. High pressure bomb technique in this guide was used to decompose soil samples. In compliance with this guide book, high pressure bomb technique was applied to decompose the antarctic soil sampled at the King Sejong Station. An Isotope Dilution-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ID-ICP-MS) was applied to determine mass concentrations of Pb, Cu and Zn in the soil. The accuracy in this method was verified by the analysis of certified reference materials (CRM) of NIST 2702 (marine sediment). The analytical results agreed with certified value within the range from 99.5~100.8%. Matrix separation was necessitated for the determination of Cu and Zn by Chelex 100 ion exchange resin. As a result, the average mass concentrations of Pb, Cu and Zn which are suspected to be caused by anthropogenic pollution were 332.9 mg/kg, 95.6 mg/kg and 115.3 mg/kg, respectively. Those for the metals sampled in the soils of the remote regions from the station were 28.1 mg/kg, 101.8 mg/kg and 115.6 mg/kg, respectively.

  • The use of chemically modified silica-salen$(NEt_2)_2$ was studied for the separation and concentration of the metal ions from an aqueous solution by a solid phase extraction. After the salen(NEt2)2 was synthesized, it was chemically bonded to silica gel by a diazonium coupling reaction. The adsorption capacities and binding constants were obtained with respect to Cu(II), Mn(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) by a graphical method. Some experimental conditions were optimized for the determination of the trace elements. After the silica-salen(NEt2)2 was pulverized in a sample solution of which the pH was adjusted, the solution was stirred to pre-concentrate the metal ions. The metal ions adsorbed were desorbed with nitric acid solution. And the concentrated analytes were determined by a flame AAS. The method proposed here was so rarely influenced by a sample matrix that the procedure was applied to 3 types of water samples. The reproducible results of less than 10% RSD were obtained at the concentration level of ca. 100 ng/mL and the recoveries of 95-109% were obtained in the spiked samples in which given amounts of analytes were added.

  • The various eluents have been used for the separations of alkaline earth metals by elutions through cation exchange resin column by many investigators. We find, the mixed solution of 1M HAc and 1M NaAc (pH 4.75) is the best eluent for this purpose, becouse the one step elution through 7cm Dowex 50w${\times}$8(100~200mesh) resin column with this eluent, gives the quantitative separation. When 2M NaAc is used as a eluent Sr(II) and Ba(II) is separated easily without any contamination of Mg(II) andCa(II). The Ca-Pb alloy which is composed of Cu, Ca, Sr, Ba and abundance of Pb metal is separated quantitatively into its components by the two step elution with 0.3M HAc + 0.3M NaAc(PH 4.75) and 0.5M HAc + 0.5M NaAc(PH 4.75) as eluents through 10cm resin column.

  • Waste sludge may be used to recovery wastewater contaminated with heavy metals. The waste sludge is an inexpensive readily available source of biomass for biosorption with metal-bearing wastewater. The biosorption of heavy metals such as Pb(II), Cu(II), Cr(II), and Cd(II) onto waste sludge was investigated in batch experiments and waste sludge loaded heavy metals was separated by dissolved air flotation. The biosorption equibria of heavy metals could be described by Langmuir and Freundich isotherms. The adsorption capacity for waste sludge was in the sequence of Pb(II)>Cr(II)>Cu(II)>Cd(II). The system attained equilibrium about 20 min. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption model effectively described the biosorption equilibrium of Cu(II) and Cr(II) ions on waste sludge. Maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) and Cr(II) were 196.08 and 158.73 mg/g, respectively. Solid-liquid separation efficiencies were kept above $95\%$ on waste sludge loaded heavy metals, and were decreased with pH increasing.

  • Wind tunnel experiments were conducted under highly turbulent and disturbed flow conditions over a solid/perforated plate with a long splitter plate in its plane of symmetry. The effect of varied level of perforation of the normal plate on fluctuating velocities and fluctuating pressures measured across and along the separation bubble was studied. The different perforation levels of the normal plate; that is 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% are studied. The Reynolds number based on step height was varied from $4{\times}10^3$ to $1.2{\times}10^4$. The shape and size of the bubble vary with different perforation level of the normal plate that is to say the bubble is reduced both in height and length up to 30% perforation level. For higher perforation of the normal plate, bubble is completely swept out. The peak turbulence value occurs around 0.7 to 0.8 times the reattachment length. The turbulence intensity values are highest for the case of solid normal plate (bleed air is absent) and are lowest for the case of 50% perforation of the normal plate (bleed air is maximum in the present study). From the analysis of data it is observed that $\sqrt{\overline{u^{{\prime}2}}}/(\sqrt{\overline{u^{{\prime}2}}})_{max}$, (the ratio of RMS velocity fluctuation to maximum RMS velocity fluctuation), is uniquely related with dimensionless distance y/Y', (the ratio of distance normal to splitter plate to the distance where RMS velocity fluctuation is half its maximum value) for all the perforated normal plates. It is interesting to note that for 50% perforation of the normal plate, the RMS pressure fluctuation in the flow field gets reduced to around 60% as compared to that for solid normal plate. Analysis of the results show that the ratio [$C^{\prime}_p$ max/$-C_{pb}(1-{\eta})$], where $C^{\prime}_p$ max is the maximum coefficient of fluctuating pressure, $C_{pb}$ is the coefficient of base pressure and ${\eta}$ is the perforation level (ratio of open to total area), for surface RMS pressure fluctuation levels seems to be constant and has value of about 0.22. Similar analysis show that the ratio $[C^{\prime}_p$ max/$-C_{pb}(1-{\eta})]$ for flow field RMS pressure fluctuation levels seems to be constant and has a value of about 0.32.

  • Distribution coefficients of various elements with the strong acidic caion-exchanger, Dowex 50W-x8, 100∼200 mesh were investigated in various concentrations of succinic, hydrochloic acid and it's mixture. Based on these distribution coefficients, the experimental condition for their quantitative separation of those elements is established in 0.9 M hydrochloric acid as eluent, several examples of successful separations are described and the dependence of distribution coefficients on ionic radius is also discussed.

  • Quantitative analytical condition for lead and cadmium in copper contained carbon materials using solvent extraction followed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry was studied. Copper contained carbon samples were dissolved by nitric acid-perchloric acid digestion. Lead and cadmium were determined after separation with KCN masked copper by an dithizone-chloroform solvent extraction. Recovery efficiency of analyte elements was satisfactory, and most of matrix elements causing interference could be effectively eliminated by the separation. Lead and cadmium were quantitatively determined without influence of sample matrix, by applying it procedure to artifact sample.
