PURPOSES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate physical properties, durability, fatigue resistance, and long-term performance of poly-urethane concrete (PU) which can be possible application of thin layer on long-span orthotropic steel bridge and to check structural stability of bridge structure. METHODS : Various tests of physical properties, such as flexural strength, tensile strength, bond strength and coefficient of thermal expansion tests were conducted for physical property evaluation using two types of poly urethane concrete which have different curing time. Freezing and thawing test, accelerated weathering test and chloride ion penetration test were performed to evaluate the effect of exposed to marine environment. Beam fatigue test and small scale accelerated pavement test were performed to assess the resistance of PU against fatigue damage and long-term performance. Structural analysis were conducted to figure out structural stability of bridge structure and thin bridge deck pavement system. RESULTS: The property tests results showed that similar results were observed overall however the flexural strength of PUa was higher than those of PUb. It was also found that PU materials showed durability at marine environment. Beam fatigue test results showed that the resistances of the PUa against fatigue damage were two times higher than those of the PUb. It was found form small scale accelerated pavement test to evaluate long-term performance that there is no distress observed after 800,000 load applications. Structural analysis to figure out structural stability of bridge structure and thin bridge deck pavement system indicated that bridge structures were needed to increase thickness of steel deck plate or to improve longitudinal rib shape. CONCLUSIONS: It has been known that the use of PU can be positively considered to thin layer on long-span orthotropic steel bridge in terms of properties considered marine environment, resistance of fatigue damage and long-term performance.
In this study, the hydrological properties of permeable pavement were analyzed by the experiment and the numerical simulation. The numerical model used was a modified SWMM especially for considering the hydrological response of permeable pavement. The parameters of modified SWMM were revised by the experimental results, and then the practicability was evaluated through the comparison of the experimental and numerical simulation results. In the experiments, three different rainfall intensities such as 65 mm/hr, 90 mm/hr, 95 mm/hr were supplied for 4 hrs, and the hydraulic properties including surface outflow, subsurface outflow, ground water level, soil water contents were measured for 10 hrs. The results showed rainfall intensity effected directly on surface outflow volume and subsurface outflow volume was more effected by ground water level than rainfall intensity. The ground water level and the soil water contents were under estimated as compared with the experimental data except the portion of occurring direct runoff. The surface and subsurface outflow discharge were simulated very well in comparison with the experimental data. Consequently, the modified SWMM could be used very effectively to evaluate the hydrological property of permeable pavement.

The purpose of this study is to propose the evaluation criteria of asphalt pavement condition in narrow regional road considering the traffic environment in order to reduce road budget of local governments. In general, narrow regional roads are considered relatively less important because they have low travel speed and low traffic volume of heavy-vehicle. Generally, automatic surveying equipment is used for investigations of pavement condition, but the operating costs are not efficient for the narrow regional roads because the cost is too high. This study presents the pavement condition evaluation index suitable for narrow regional roads. In this study, the pavement condition evaluation index is presented considering the traffic environment of narrow regional roads. The pavement condition were classified into three classes based on the crack measured by visual inspection, and the validity of the pavement condition evaluation index presented through the expert's questionnaire survey was examined. Pavement condition for the narrow regional roads was classified into three grades based on the index values calculated by visual inspection. Expert's surveys were conducted to evaluate the validity of the proposed pavement condition evaluation. The proposed evaluation index shows a high correlation with questionnaire survey result ($R^2=0.88$). The proposed evaluation index which is obtained through visual crack inspection under limited conditions can be applied to narrow regional roads. In addition, it is expected that it will be effective not only for road management but also for road management budget by more economical evaluation method of pavement condition.

The US Pavement Design method (AASHTO) and HDM-4, a road pavement maintenance decision system, are not suitable for domestic pavement design, construction and maintenance. KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) has been developed to reflect Korea's environmental conditions and vehicle characteristics, thereby, extending pavement life. The main objective of this study is to select the best alternative through Life Cycle Cost $CO_2$ (LCCC) calculations among three representative maintenance strategies using KPRP design software since the environment cost resulting from the extended pavement life will also differ. The analysis of this study illustrates that cumulative carbon emissions for 40 years in alternative 2 (Cutting and Overlaying at Year 30) is the lowest option among them, and the basic cost of $CO_2$ emission by various road maintenance and repair work can be used for suggesting an optimal maintenance strategy for highway agency.
PURPOSES: The purpose of asphalt pavement reducing surface temperature by using Pipe cooling system is to make pleasant city life environment. METHODS: We considered building condition to lay the pipes under asphalt pavement and figured out that temperature reducing effect with pipe cooling system. In addition, we guessed rutting through wheel tracking test with a laid the pipes under asphalt mixture and performed fatigue cracking through a flexural fatigue test for performance evaluation of pipe cooling system. RESULTS: When pipe cooling system worked, the temperature of pavement model reduced quickly in test. The system can turn down the degree by 4 or 5 quickly as well. It didn't affect rutting to lay the pipes under the pavement, but it can get damaged to asphalt pavement in early stage by the result of performance evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: We figured out that pipe cooling system can turn down the temperature of aspalt pavement surface through tests. We suggest that pipe cooling system should be considered one of the effective way to solve urban heat island problem.

This study analyzed the field applicability through the combination of environment-friendly grid-typed reinforcements and pre-mixed fiber with filler. The film of the grid-typed reinforcement is made by recycled PE resin. And, Ascon fiber is obtained the dispersion by pre-mixing of filler. To be able to recognize in advance the various circumstances that could arise in the construction of the road pavement layer, we conducted a basic field application test of the (Mock Up) pavement layer. As a result, it was found that the pavement with environment-friendly grid-typed reinforcement and dispersive fiber construction had improved strength, stress, and rutting resistance. It is consistent with the strength and stress results of the actual test of the mock up specimen. It is expected to perform an effective role in the safety as well as the use of environment-friendly fibers in actual construction.
Used as foundation resources for environment improvement and preservation of single-housing residential area by practicing classification of biotope with the concept of ecological area rate applied and performing urban thermal environment prediction simulation. Biotope is classified as seven types according to classification of biotope which is carried out with the concept of ecological area rate applied. The classification is listed below in descending order: building biotope(48.16%), impervious pavement biotope(39.75%), greenspace biotope(6.23%), crack permeable pavement biotope(3.26%), whole surface permeable pavement biotope(2.51%), parts permeable pavement biotope(0.04%). As a result of analysing prediction of variation and characteristics of thermal environment of single-housing residential area, land surface temperature per types of biotope are evaluated as listed below in descending temperature order: impervious pavement biotope > building biotope > greenspace biotope > permeable pavement biotope. In case 2 where vegetated roof hypothetically covers 100% of the roof area, temperature is predicted to be $33.58^{\circ}C$ Max, $23.85^{\circ}C$ Min, and $27.74^{\circ}C$ Avg. which is Approximately $5.19^{\circ}C$ lower than a non-vegetated roof. Average outdoor temperature for case 2 is studied to be $0.18^{\circ}C$ lower than case 1.

The non-exhaust coarse, fine, and ultrafine particles were characterized by on-road driving measurements using a mobile sampling system. The on-road driving measurements under constant speed driving revealed that mass concentrations of roadway particles (RWPs) were distributed mainly in a size range of 2~3 ${\mu}m$ and slightly increased with increasing vehicle speed. Under braking conditions, the mode diameters of the particles were generally similar with those obtained under constant speed conditions. However, the PM concentrations emitted during braking condition were significantly higher than those produced under normal driving conditions. Higher number concentrations of ultrafine particles smaller than 70 nm were observed during braking conditions, and the number concentration of particles sampled 90 mm above the pavement was 6 times higher than that obtained 40 mm above the pavement. Under cornering conditions, the number concentrations of RWPs sampled 40 mm above the pavement surface were higher than those sampled 90 mm above the pavement. This might be explained that a nucleation burst of a lot of vapor evaporated from the interaction between the tire and the road pavement under braking conditions continuously occurred by cooling during the transport to the sampling height 90 mm, while, for the case of cornering situations, the ultrafine particle formation was completed before the transport to the sampling height of 40 mm.
Here we evaluated the effect of using water retentive pavement or WRP made from fly ash as material for main street in a real city block. We coupled computational fluid dynamics and pavement transport (CFD-PT) model to examine energy balance in the building canopies and ground surface. Two cases of 24 h unsteady analysis were simulated: case 1 where asphalt was used as the pavement material of all ground surfaces and case 2 where WRP was used as main street material. We aim to (1) predict diurnal variation in air temperature, wind speed, ground surface temperature and water content; and (2) compare ground surface energy fluxes. Using the coupled CFD-PT model it was proven that WRP as pavement material for main street can cause a decrease in ground surface temperature. The most significant decrease occurred at 1200 JST when solar radiation was most intense, surface temperature decreased by $13.8^{\circ}C$. This surface temperature decrease also led to cooling of air temperature at 1.5 m above street surface. During this time, air temperature in case 2 decreased by $0.28^{\circ}C$. As the radiation weakens from 1600 JST to 2000 JST, evaporative cooling had also been minimal. Shadow effect, higher albedo and lower thermal conductivity of WRP also contributed to surface temperature decrease. The cooling of ground surface eventually led to air temperature decrease. The degree of air temperature decrease was proportional to the surface temperature decrease. In terms of energy balance, WRP caused a maximum increase in latent heat flux by up to $255W/m^2$ and a decrease in sensible heat flux by up to $465W/m^2$.

In this study this writer carried out survey and analysis on paving materials of children's playground for 40 apartment buildings with each of such apartment containing 100 households or more and which were built within last 15 years in Jeonju. As a result of analysis of such questionnaires this author could draw following conclusion. In the second half of 1990s pavement materials which were used mainly were sand and during first half of 2000s they were mixture of sand and rubber block and around 2010 they were rubber block or rubber chip pavements. Such change seemed to be a result of consideration of convenience for management and safety rather than in deference to diversity of children's outing places. Survey on the current status of pavement materials revealed need for directives by the main entity for management and their firm resolve for its implementation. And there was need for their coping with problems such as pressure of treading or lack of it or poor condition of drainage in case of sand and phenomena of pitting or dipping down, discoloring and poor drainage in case of rubber chips and rubber blocks and loosening of gaps between rubber blocks etc. Result of analysing status of usage disclosed that 50.4% of the respondents to questionnaires stated that they had experience of accidents. With regard to cause of such accident it was found that 47.5% of accidents were attributable to play facilities and 19.5% were due to paving (floor) materials thus it was disclosed that not only play facilities but also pavement materials had impact on safety for the children. Result of analysing level of satisfaction with pavement materials showed that pavement by rubber chips and blocks had higher level of satisfaction which was reflection of fear on cleanness of sand. In terms of preference rubber chip and rubber block pavements were highest and the next one was sand. Reason for such preference was based on concern with safety.
