  • We propose a transflective In-Plane Switching mode in which patterned retarder is placed only on the reflective area of the upper substrate side. By selecting optic axes of Half Wavelength Plate and Liquid Crystal as 24 and 90 degree with respect to polarizer, condition of low reflectance for visible wavelength range at black state is found.

  • This paper proposes a readability enhancement filter for Patterned Retarder (PR) display. In general, when some texts in stereoscopic images are shown on PR display, their readability tends to be lowered. In order to overcome this problem, we present a readability enhancement algorithm which consists of readability filtering stage and post-processing stage for specific characters. First, each input stereo image is divided into an odd line image and an even line image. Then, they are independently up-scaled vertically by using Lanczos filter. Next, two up-scaled line images are averaged considering vertical phase difference. In post-processing stage, two specific characters which are normally difficult to read on PR display are detected, and they are filtered for additional readability enhancement. Here, this additional filtering is based on a specific brightness adjustment, and is applied only for two characters. The experiment results show that the proposed method achieves significant improvement in terms of readability in comparison with the previous scheme.

  • An inverse-twisted-nematic (ITN) transflective (TRF) liquid crystal (LC) display, where two imprinted optical films (IOFs) with surface microstructures are embedded was developed. One of the IOFs serves as an in-cell patterned retarder with multioptic axes, and the other behaves as a viewing-angle enhancement film. In the presence of an applied voltage, the surface microstructures on the IOFs provide the spontaneous twist of the LC from a vertically aligned state to a $90^{\circ}$ twisted-nematic (TN) state in the transmissive part, and to a $45^{\circ}$ TN state in the reflective part. The developed ITN TRF LC display exhibits high transmission and reflectance, fast response, and wide-viewing characteristics, along with achromaticity.

  • Optically isotropic liquid crystal (LC) mixture such as blue-phase LC and nanostructured LC composites exhibit the advantages of fast response time, high contrast ratio and wide-viewing angle due to the induced birefringence along the horizontal electric field. Utilizing this mixture, a novel single cell gap in-plane switching-type polymer-stabilized blue-phase transflective liquid crystal display by embedding the nanowire grid polarizer as a polarization-dependent reflective polarizer in the R region is proposed. This device can be used as a normal black mode without any quarter-wave plate or patterned in-cell phase retarder. Moreover, the transmittance is identical to the reflectance so that it will be suitable for single gamma driving. Detailed electro-optic performances, such as voltage-dependent light efficiency and viewing angle of the proposed device configuration, are investigated.

  • This work reports the simple fabrication of the single cell gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using wire grid polarizer. The nano sized wire grid polarizer was patterned on common electrode itself, on the reflective part of FFS (Fringe field switching) mode whereas the common electrode was unpatterned at transmissive part. However, this structure didn't show single gamma curve, so we further improved the device by patterning the common electrode at transmissive part. As a result, V-T curve of proposed structure shows single gamma curve. Such a device structure is free from in-cell retarder, compensation film and reflector and furthermore it is very thin and easy to fabricate.

  • Debates concerning the competitive edge of leading 3DTV technology of the shutter glasses (SG) 3D and the film-type patterned retarder (FPR) are flaring up. Although SG technology enables Full-HD 3D vision, it requires complex systems including the sync transmitter (emitter), the sync processor chip, and the LCD lens in the active shutter glasses. In addition, the transferred sync-signal is easily affected by the external noise and a 3DTV viewer may feel flicker-effect caused by cross-talk of the left and right image. The operating current of the sync processor in the 3DTV active shutter glasses is gradually increasing to compensate the sync reconstruction error. The proposed chip is a low-power hardware sync processor based discrete-event SoC(system on a chip) designed specifically for the 3DTV active shutter glasses. This processor implements the newly designed power-saving techniques targeted for low-power operation in a noisy environment between 3DTV and the active shutter glasses. This design includes a hardware pre-processor based on a universal edge tracer and provides a perfect sync reconstruction based on a floating-point timer to advance the prior commercial 3DTV shutter glasses in terms of their power consumption. These two techniques enable an accurate sync reconstruction in the slow clock frequency of the synchronization timer and reduce the power consumption to less than about a maximum of 20% compared with other major commercial processors. This article describes the system's architecture and the details of the proposed techniques, also identifying the key concepts and functions.
