  • This paper describes the method of syntactic-semantic pattern recognition and description for two dimensional object which is adjusted or changed in size and its orientation. To avoid the complexity and ambiguity which is arised in the case of syntactic or decision-theoretic method is used individually, an attributed grammar is introduced which applies computative attributes to pattern primitives, and then uses decision-theoretic method for attributes and syntactic method for pattern structure. A primitive extraction embedding parsing and grobal rule for classification is also applied for more effective pattern recognition and description.

  • Rough classification methods are used to improving the recognition speed in many character recognition problems. In this case, some irreversible result can occur by an error in rough classification. Methods for duplicating each model in several classes are used in order to reduce this risk. But the errors by rough classfication can not be completely ruled out by these methods. In this paper, an recognition method is proposed to increase speed that matches models selectively without any increase in error. This method constructs a model graph using similarity between models. Then a search process begins from a particular point in the model graph. In this process, matching of unnecessary models are reduced that are not similar to the input pattern. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to the recognition problem of handwriting numbers and upper/lower cases of English alphabets. In the experiments, the proposed method was compared with the basic method that matches all models with input pattern. As a result, the same recognition rate, which has shown as the basic method, was obtained by controlling the out-degree of the model graph and the number of maintaining candidates during the search process thereby being increased the recognition speed to 2.45 times.

  • A tire tread pattern recognition scheme of which the pattern recognition algorithm is designed based on the fuzzy hierarchical clustering method is proposed and compared with the scheme based on the conventional FCM. The features are extracted from the binary images of the tire tread patterns. In the proposed scheme, the protoypes are obtained more easily and schematically than obtained prototypes using FCM. The experimental results of classification for the practical situations are given and shows the usefulness of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, we apply several pattern recognition algorithms to emotion recognition system with speech signal and compare the results. Firstly, we need emotional speech databases. Also, speech features for emotion recognition is determined on the database analysis step. Secondly, recognition algorithms are applied to these speech features. The algorithms we try are artificial neural network, Bayesian learning, Principal Component Analysis, LBG algorithm. Thereafter, the performance gap of these methods is presented on the experiment result section. Truly, emotion recognition technique is not mature. That is, the emotion feature selection, relevant classification method selection, all these problems are disputable. So, we wish this paper to be a reference for the disputes.

  • This paper proposes an expert system based on the pattern recognition method which can enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of real-time bus reconfiguration strategy for the transfer of faulted load when a main transformer fault occurs in the automated substation. The minimum distance classification method is adopted as the pattern recognition method of expert system. The training pattern set is designed MTr by MTr to minimize the searching time for target load pattern which is similar to the real-time load pattern. But the control pattern set, which is required to determine the corresponding bus reconfiguration strategy to these trained load pattern set is designed as one table by considering the efficiency of knowledge base design because its size is small. The training load pattern generator based on load level and the training load pattern generator based on load profile are designed, which are can reduce the size of each training pattern set from max L/sup (m+f)/ to the size of effective level. Here, L is the number of load level, m and f are the number of main transformers and the number of feeders. The one reduces the number of trained load pattern by setting the sawmiller patterns to a same pattern, the other reduces by considering only load pattern while the given period. And control pattern generator based on exhaustive search method with breadth-limit is designed, which generates the corresponding bus reconfiguration strategy to these trained load pattern set. The inference engine of the expert system and the substation database and knowledge base is implemented in MFC function of Visual C++ Finally, the performance and effectiveness of the proposed expert system is verified by comparing the best-first search solution and pattern recognition solution based on diversity event simulations for typical distribution substation.

  • Human face gender recognition requires fast image processing with high accuracy. Existing face gender recognition methods used traditional local features and machine learning methods have shortcomings of low accuracy or slow speed. In this paper, a new framework for face gender recognition to reach fast face gender recognition is proposed, which is based on Local Ternary Pattern (LTP) and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM). LTP is a generalization of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) that is in the presence of monotonic illumination variations on a face image, and has high discriminative power for texture classification. It is also more discriminate and less sensitive to noise in uniform regions. On the other hand, ELM is a new learning algorithm for generalizing single hidden layer feed forward networks without tuning parameters. The main advantages of ELM are the less stringent optimization constraints, faster operations, easy implementation, and usually improved generalization performance. The experimental results on public databases show that, in comparisons with existing algorithms, the proposed method has higher precision and better generalization performance at extremely fast learning speed.

  • In complicated environment, context information plays an important role in image segmentation/labeling. The recently proposed auto-context algorithm is one of the effective context-based methods. However, the standard auto-context approach samples the context locations utilizing a fixed radius sequence, which is sensitive to large scale-change of objects. In this paper, we present a scale invariant auto-context (SIAC) algorithm which is an improved version of the auto-context algorithm. In order to achieve scale-invariance, we try to approximate the optimal scale for the image in an iterative way and adopt the corresponding optimal radius sequence for context location sampling, both in training and testing. In each iteration of the proposed SIAC algorithm, we use the current classification map to estimate the image scale, and the corresponding radius sequence is then used for choosing context locations. The algorithm iteratively updates the classification maps, as well as the image scales, until convergence. We demonstrate the SIAC algorithm on several image segmentation/labeling tasks. The results demonstrate improvement over the standard auto-context algorithm when large scale-change of objects exists.

  • This paper presents an arificial neuro-fuzzy technique based prtial discharge (PD) pattern classifier to power system application. This may require a complicated analysis method employ -ing an experts system due to very complex progressing discharge form under exter-nal stress. After referring briefly to the developments of artificical neural network based PD measurements, the paper outlines how the introduction of new emerging technology has resulted in the design of a number of PD diagnostic systems for practical applicaton of residual lifetime prediction. The appropriate PD data base structure and selection of learning data size of PD pattern based on fractal dimentsional and 3-D PD-normalization, extraction of relevant characteristic fea-ture of PD recognition are discussed. Some practical aspects encountered with unknown stress in the neuro-fuzzy techniques based real time PD recognition are also addressed.
