Positive airway pressure (PAP) is currently recommended as a primary treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and positively affects various subjective and objective parameters related to OSAS, such as the apnea-hypopnea index, excessive daytime sleepiness, and blood pressure. However, PAP also exhibits various adverse effects, including skin breakdown, pressure intolerance, claustrophobia, unintentional mask removal, mouth leaks, and dryness. Especially, unintentional mask removal due to nasal obstruction may result in poor PAP compliance. A 47-year-old male patient with severe OSAS who had low PAP compliance due to nasal obstruction underwent nasal surgery. After the surgery, nasal obstruction was corrected and the patient experienced improved PAP compliance (from 30.4% to 86.7%). This case demonstrates that nasal surgery may be useful for improving PAP compliance in OSAS patients with nasal obstruction.
Purpose: This study was designed to explore the effects of providing individualized education for hemodialysis patients on their knowledge of hemodialysis, compliance of patient role behavior, and physiologic parameters. Method: A quasi experimental design with a non-equivalent control group and a non-synchronized design was used. The experiment was conducted with a total of 40 hemodialysis patients (20 in the experimental group and 20 in the control group) at the artificial kidney center, C University Hospital. The experimental group was provided with individualized education, 30 minutes per session, three times per week, for two weeks. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher knowledge of hemodialysis than the control group after the education. The compliance of patient role behavior was more enhanced in the experimental group than the control group. The experimental group showed significantly higher values of blood urea nitrogen, but not the values of blood creatinine, albumin, kalium, and phosphorus. Conclusion: The individualized education was found to be an effective intervention for improving patients' knowledge of hemodialysis and compliance of patient role behavior.
This study was designed to identify the relationship between perceived self-efficacy and self care behavioral compliance in type II diabetic patient. The subjects for this study were the 113 adults with type II diabetes that received hospital treatment or attended as outpatients in 2 general hospitals at Inchon City. The data were collected during the period from August 15 to semtember 15, 2000 by means of an interview. Collected data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation using the SPSS/PC+ program. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The mean score of self care behavioral compliance was 3.06. 2. There were statistically significant difference in self care behavioral compliance according to sex(p<0.05), age (p<0.001), BMI(p<0.05), education(p<0.001), occupation(p<0.001), experience of diabetic education(p<0.05) and complication(p<0.05). 3. The mean score of perceived self-efficacy was 3.45. Self care behavioral compliance and perceived self-efficacy had a positive correlation which was statistically significant (r=0.3879 p<0.001). 4. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the influencing factors for self care behavioral compliance. Education, experience of diabetic education and self-efficacy accounted for 41% of the variance in self care behavioral compliance. The results suggest that education, experience of diabetic education and self-efficacy are important variables in the compliance of self-care behavior with typeII diabetes.
This descriptive correlational study was carried to identify the relationship among social support, compliance, and psychosocial adjustment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The study was done with 100 rheumatoid arthritic patients who were visited in Outpatient clinic of university hospital in Taegu, Korea from the 23rd of February to the 20th of March in 1998. The Data were collected through person to person interviews which were performed by five researchers. The instruments used for this study were Yu's social support scale(1996), Cho's compliance scale(1987), and Kim's psychosocial adjustment scale(1997). The data was analyzed by using a t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, ANOVA, and Tukey test with the SAS Program. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The mean score of social support was 2.76 for 4 full marks, compliance was 3.20 for 5 full marks, and psychosocial adjustment was 2.26 for 4 full marks. 2. Hypothesis 1 : "The higher the social support degree, the higher the compliance degree of the rheumatoid arthritis patient". It was supported(r=0.54, p<0.001). Hypothesis 2 : "The higher the compliance degree, the higher the psychosocial adjustment degree of the rheumatoid arthritis patient". It was supported(r=0.34, p<0.001). Hypothesis 3 : "The higher the social support degree, the higher the psychosocial adjustment degree of the rheumatoid arthritis patient". It was supported(r=0.24, p<0.05). 3. In general, the spouse group compared to other groups was demonstrated as the most dependable group for patients to trust and expect support. And the sons and daughters group was shown higher than other groups in terms of social support(F=4.19, p=0.01). There was no difference in terms of compliance in degree. In the degree of psychosocial adjustment the highly educated group(more than high school) is a little higher than the lowly educated group(F=3.08, p=0.03). In the costs of medical care, the group that could afford was significant higher than the group which could not afford results in terms of the psychosocial adjustment degree(F=3.99, p=0.01). The outcome of this study is that the social support that related rheumatoid arthritic patients had an effect on the following compliance, and the following compliance helps psychosocial adjustment of patients. It also shows that social support related psychosocial adjustment. Therefore, to increase the level of psychosocial adjustment of rheumatoid arthritic patients, it will be effective in supportive nursing intervention to improve social support and compliance.
Everyone has own color preference and the color preference can affect human psychology in various good or bad ways. Especially patients with chronic diseases often have depressed mood to take pills for their disease treatment. Therefore we evaluate the possibility of their color preference to pharmacotherapy in good way which increases the compliance of pharmacotherapy. We performed this study by a Questionnaire survey for total 150 agreed patients at K University hospital from Aug 7 to Sep 30, 2014. Questionnaire survey was performed to choose color of providing color kit (11 different color range kit) depend on each 16 questions which asked the patient characteristics, health condition, general color preference, color preference for medicine and expectation for drug compliance. In results, most preferred color was blue (20%), whereas disliked color was black (30%) in general life. However, most preferred color for pill was white (32%), for syrup was also white (31%) or orange (28%), and for vitamin was yellow (47%). When we asked the possibility of increasing compliance, if the current taking pill color will be changed for your preference color like a candy bar, 50.4% of respondents marked 4 or 5 of like-scale expressing positive opinion on it. In conclusion, compliance is very important to succeed the treating disease and may apply the psychologic application such as each patient color preference for drug compliance in the future.

A total of 32 hospitalized stroke patients in experimental group were given individualized education three times at one day before, the day of and one week after discharge. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test and $x^2$-test. Results: The scores of anxiety at posttest were $45.66{\pm}9.58$ in control group and $35.44{\pm}8.21$ in the experimental group. Self-compliance scores were $44.00{\pm}7.99$ in control and $61.06{\pm}7.69$ in the experimental group. These indicate that anxiety score is significantly lower (t=-4.58, p<.001), and self-compliance score is significantly higher (t=8.70, p<.001) in experimental group. Conclusion: If stroke patients receive a relevant individualized education, it could help reduce their anxiety. Also it would be useful to maintain and improve their self-care compliance after discharge.
Traction of impacted tooth often requires patient compliance to place elastics to surgically exposed impacted tooth. It can be very difficult and time-consuming. The aim of this article was to describe an impacted tooth tractor, Moon's appliance, which was modified from the Nance holding arch appliance. Moon's appliance eliminates patient compliance and generates a light continuous force. We achieved the desired treatment results for impacted tooth using this appliance. This new fixed appliance can be a reasonable alternative to conventional appliances.
