  • We design a multi-element photo-detector to measure the size of particles using the diffracted light energy distribution. The scattered profile measured by the photodetector is sampled by a 32 channel analog-to-digital converter. A nonnegative least squares analysis translates the light energy distribution into the corresponding unique particle size distribution. The responses of the particle sizing system are studied theoretically and experimentally.

  • $BaTiO_3$ ceramics powder was prepared by coprecipitation method either in oxalic acid solution or in potassium hydroxide solution. Thermal decomposition of coprecipitated $BaTiO(C_2O_4)_2$.$4H_2O$ powder in oxalic acid solution was investigated by means of Themogravimetry Differential Thermal Analysis and X-ray Diffraction Analysis. Low temperature decomposition of coprecipitated $BaTiO(C_2O_4)_2$.$4H_2O$ caused narrow particle size distribution whereas high temperature decomposition caused fairly wide particle size distribution by partial sintering. As the reaction time increased the average particle size of coprecipitated $BaTiO_3$ powder in KOH solution was increased. The most narrow paticle size distribution was obtained when the coprecipi-tates were ripened for 4hrs.

  • Titanium hydroxide (TiO({{{{ {OH }_{2 } }})) fine particles were produced by the reverse micelle technique. For the formation of titanium hydroxide (TiO({{{{ {OH }_{2 } }})) particles with the technique reversed micellar solution was prepared by solubilizing water into organic solvent (isooctane) with a surfactant and titanium alkoxide (tetraisopropyl orthotitanate) diluted with isopropyl alcohol was added to the reversed micellar solution. The hdrolyzed species (TiO({{{{ {OH }_{2 } }})) was formed by the hydrolysis of titanium alkoxide and titanium dioxide is then formed by the condensation of the hydrolyzed species. There are several process variables such as surfactants concentration of surface cosurfactant hydrolysis temperature and pH. In this work the ef-fects of process variables on paticle shapes particle size distribution and paticle agglomeration were bi-nodal for an anionic surfactant(AOT) in the whole range of temperature pH and surfactant concentration of this experiment. The addition of ethanol as a cosurfactant resulted in narrow particle size distribution of the experiment. The additiono of ethanol as a cosurfactant resulted in narrow particle size distribution and 0.12${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of smaller average particle diameter. FT-IR spectrum of particles shows the absorption peak of Ti-OH bonding and Ti-O bonding. An exothermic peak around 41$0^{\circ}C$ in TGA-DTA curve shows that crys- tallized anatase phase appears and completely transits to anatase around 45$0^{\circ}C$.

  • This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between theoretical parameters affecting the coagulation process and the real coagulation phenomenon applied to the dye wastewater. Emphasis was placed on the effective removal of the suspend particulates. Parameters studied in this study are pH, coagulant concentration and surface potential. Optimal dosages of coagulants by the measurement of the zeta potential at lower then $25^{\circ}C$ are 5\times$10^P-3}$ M of $FeCl_3 and 1.4\times10^{-6}M of Fe_2(SO_4)_3$. The results were well agreeded with the separate Jar-test results. Emphasis was also placed on the relationship between water quality and the content of SS. It was found that the COD and DOC were reduced to 65% and 85%, respectively. The turbidity at the above condition was reduced from 300 NTU to 0~1 NTU. Efforts were made to clarify the behavior of the suspend solid as affecting the water quality. 12,000~13,000 particles/10mL in $1~50\mu$m size range particulates in the raw wastewater were reduced to 300 particle/10mL in the same range after treatment. This research has proposed the methodology to find out the optimal condition of coagulation for small scale wastewater treatment plant or chemical coagulation process.

  • The most appropriate mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash obtained from compaction characteristics and CBR values is varying from 5:5 to 6:4. But these mixed ashes are frost-susceptible materials according to judging by the paticle-size distribution because of a lot of silty-size paticles. In this study, the frost-susceptibility of compacted coal ash with proper mixing ratio is examined experimentally for use of subgrade materials. And, the efforts have been made to find proper cement addition in making these mixed ashes frost-insusceptible. It was revealed that these mixed ashes are frost-susceptible, and 4% of cement content is required to be made frost-insusceptable. It was found that amount of frost heave of these mixed ashes decreases with the unconfined compressive strength, and increases with log k if the permeability coefficient k is as low as the water into the freezing front of these mixed ashes is restricted.

  • 13Cr-1.5Nb-Fe alloy powder prepared by water atomizing method is reduced with flowing hydrogen gas. The characteristics of a reduced alloy powder is investigated and magnetic cores formed by using the reduction power sintered in the vacuum of ∼10$\^$-5/ Torr. In order to study on the magnetic cores permeability and power loss in alternating magnetic field are also measured. The result of particle size distribution shows the paticle size is 70 ㎛ at volume fraction of 50 %. The saturation magnetization of the reduced alloy powder is 160 emu/g. The relative peak permeability (H$\_$a/=5Oe) of a magnetic core is 400 and the power loss (B$\_$m/=80G) 0.12 mW/cc at sintering temperature of 1,200 $\^{C}$, 10 ton/㎠ forming pressure, and 1 kHz.

  • The formation of thick alloyed layer with high Si content have been investigated on the surface of Al alloy (A5083) plate by PTA process with Si powder. Hardening characteristics and wear resistance of alloyed layer was examined in relation to the microstructure of alloyed layer. Thick hardened layer in mm-order thickness on the surface of A5083 plate can be formed by PTA process with wide range of process condition by using Si powder as alloying element because of eutectic reaction of Al-Si binary alloy. High temperature and rapid solidification rate of molten pool, which are features of PTA process, enable the formation of high Si content alloyed layer with uniform distribution of fine primary Si paticle. High plasma arc current was beneficial to make the alloyed layer with smooth surface appearance in wide range of powder feeding rate, because enough volume of molten pool was necessary make alloyed layer. Uniform dispersion of fine primary Si particle with about 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in particle size can be obtained in layer with Si content ranging from 30 to 50 mass %. Hardness of alloyed layer increased with increasing Si content, but increasing rate of hardness differed with macrostructure of alloyed layer. Wear resistance of alloyed layer depended on $V_{si}$(volume fraction of primary Si) and was remarkably improved to two times of base metal at 20-30% $V_{si}$ without cracking, but no more improvement was obtained at larger $V_{si}$.

  • Particle size distribution, pasting properties by Rapid Visco Analyser, and textural properties of acorn, mungbean and buckwheat starches, which are the basic raw materials for mook, are compared. The major particle size of mungbean starch was $10{\sim}30$ micron, whereas acorn and buckwheat starches were $5{\sim}20$ micron. At the same starch concentration, mungbean starch had the highest peak viscosity, breakdown and setback. Acorn starch showed the lowest peak viscosity and breakdown. The peak viscosity of buckwheat starch was close to that of mungbean, however the trough and final viscosity were comparable to those of acorn starch. At the same peak viscosity, mungbean starch showed the lowest trough and final viscosity and the highest breakdown and setback. Acorn starch was differentiated from buckwheat starch in that the former had the higher value of setback. The textural properties of mungbean starch gel were significantly different from others. The texture of gels from acorn and buckwheat starches revealed that only the hardness and gumminess were different each other. The hardness of starch gels were negatively correlated with trough and final viscosity, and positively correlated with setback.
