  • We propose an improved partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detector with the branch value compensation of Viterbi decoder for asymmetric high-density optical channel. Since the compensation value calculated by a survival path is applied to each branch metric, it reduces the detection errors by the asymmetric channel. The proposed PRML detection scheme improves the detection performance on the $2^{nd},\;3^{rd}\;and\;4^{th}$ order PR targets for asymmetric optical recording channel.

  • Trust models in the literature of MANETs commonly assume that packets have different security requirements. Before a node forwards a packet, if the recipient's trust level does not meet the packet's requirement level, then the recipient must perform certain security association procedures, such as re-authentication. We present in this paper an analysis of the epidemic broadcast delay in such context. The network, mobility and trust models presented in this paper are quite generic and allow us to obtain the delay component induced only by the security associations along a path. Numerical results obtained by simulations also confirm the accuracy of the analysis. In particular, we can observe from both simulation's and analysis results that, for large and sparsely connected networks, the delay caused by security associations is very small compared to the total delay of a packet. This also means that parameters like network density and nodes' velocity, rather than any trust model parameter, have more impact on the overall delay.

  • Digital Terrain Elevation Data is a set of numerical values that represent the heights of the terrain surface. Terrain has several properties. Among them, roughness is the most widely used one because it gives very useful information to land-based or land-reference platform. There are several ways to measure roughness of terrain. But each of them has own flaws. Moreover, it is not enough to represent the uniqueness of the terrain only by the roughness. We need another metric to measure the actual uniqueness. In this paper, we propose an improved method to measure essential characteristics, uniqueness, of terrain. It gives not only the roughness but also the unevenness. The combination of them makes up the uniqueness. And it can be applied even if there is no pre-planned path on the terrain.

  • An ubiquitous environment has features like peer-to-peer and nomadic environments. Such features can be represented by peer-to-peer systems and mobile ad-hoc networks. P2P systems and MANETs share similar features, appealing for implementing P2P systems in MANET environment. However, if a P2P system designed for wired networks was applied to mobile ad-hoc environment, its performance was not good enough. Subsequently, this paper proposes a P2P system to improve performance using cross-layer design and the goodness of a node as a peer by using routing metric and P2P metric to choose favorable peers to connect. It also utilizes proactive approach for distributing peer information. The simulation results showed that the proposed system produced better performance in query success rate, query response time and energy consumption by reducing the routing path length.

  • We present a near-optimal blind decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for Advanced Television Systems Committee digital television (DTV) receivers. By adopting a modified trellis decoder (MTD) with trace back depth of 1 for the decision device In the DFE, we obtain a hardware-efficient near-optimal blind DFE approaching to the optimal DFE which has no error propagation. The MTD uses absolute distance instead of Euclidean distance for computation of a path metric, resulting. In reduced computational complexity. Comparing to the conventional slicer, the MTD shows outstanding performance improvement of decision error probability and is comparable to the original trellis decoder using Euclidean distance. Reducing error propagation in the DFE leads to the improvement of convergence performance in terms of convergence speed and residual error. Simulation results show that the proposed blind DFE performs much better than the blind DFE with the slicer.

  • Conventional energy efficient routing protocols apply high weight to energy among routing metrics, causing nodes to concentrate on energy efficient paths and quickly exhaust energy on those paths. The unbalanced energy consumption of these wireless sensor networks causes network division and malfunction, and reduces network lifetime. Therefore, in this paper, it proposes a link cost based routing protocol to solve the unbalanced energy consumption of wireless sensor networks. The proposed routing protocol calculates the link cost by applying the weight of the routing metric differently according to the network problem situation and selects the path with the lowest value. As a result of the performance analysis, it confirmed that the proposed routing protocol has 22% longer network life, 2% energy consumption standard deviation and 2% higher data reception rate than the existing AODV protocol.

  • In this paper, we describe recent research results on AODV routing protocol, which is widely deployed at mobile ad hoc networks, and AODV related routing protocols with multi-path routing schemes. We suggest the critical problems which minimum hop routing schemes have, such as AODV routing protocol, and then, propose a new C-AODV routing protocol with two routing metrics: the primary metric is the hop count, the secondary metric is the sum of link delay times. We implemented C-AODV protocol by modifying AODV at the NS-3, and thus, elaborate on how we change the original AODV source code of NS-3 in order to implement the C-AODV scheme. We show numerical comparison of C-AODV scheme with the original AODV scheme and then, discuss how much the C-AODV enhances routing performance over AODV protocol. In conclusion, we present future research items.

  • Due to the rapid development of semiconductor technology, the complexity of VLSI circuits has heavily increased. With the increased densities of integrated circuits, several different types of faults can occur Thus, testing such circuits is becoming a sever problem. Delay testing can detect system timing failures caused by delay faults. However, the conventional delay fault coverage in terms of the number of detected faults may not be an effective measure of delay testing because, unlike a stuck-at-faults, the impact of a delay fault is dependent on its delay defect size rather than on its existence. Thus, the effectiveness of delay testing is dependent on the propagation delay of the path to be tested, the delay defect size, and the system clock interval. This paper proposes a new delay defect fault coverage that considers both propagation delay of the path to be tested and additional delay defect size. And the relationship between delay defect fault coverage and defect level is analyzed.

  • Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) refer to autonomous networks in which wireless data communications are established between multiple nodes in a given coverage area without a base station or centralized administration. Because of node mobility and limited battery life, the network topology may changes frequently. Selecting the most reliable path during route discovery process is important to improve performance in ad-hoc networks. In this study, we proposed an enhanced routing protocol based on AODV by monitoring variation of receiving signal strength. New metric function that consists of node mobility and hops of path is used for routing decision. From extensive experiments by using NS-2, The performance of the proposed routing scheme has been imp개ved by comparison to AODV protocol.

  • We present a nearly optimal ($O(\nu\;min(\nu,\;n)n\;log\;n)$ time and O(n) srace) algorithm that constructs a shortest path map with n isothetic roads of speed $\nu$ under the $L_1$ metric. The algorithm uses the continuous Dijkstra method and its efficiency is based on a new geometric insight; the minimum in-degree of any nearest neighbor graph for points with roads of speed $\nu$ is $\Theta(\nu\;min(\nu,\;n))$, which is first shown in this paper. Also, this algorithm naturally extends to the multi-source case so that the Voronoi diagram for m sites can be computed in $O(\nu\;min(\nu,\;n)(n+m)log(n+m))$ time and O(n+m) space, which is also nearly optimal.
