  • This paper proposes a new parallel ASIC architecture for real-time image processing to reduce inter-processing element (inter-PE) communication overhead, called a Sliding Memory Plane (SliM) Image Processor. The Slim Image Processor consists of $3\times3$ processing elements (PEs) connected by a mesh topology. With easy scalability due to the topology. a set of SliM Image Processors can form a mesh-connected SIMD parallel architecture. called the SliM Array Processor. The idea of sliding means that all pixels are slided into all neighboring PEs without interrupting PEs and without a coprocessor or a DMA controller. Since the inter-PE communication and computation occur simultaneously. the inter-PE communication overhead, significant disadvantage of existing machines greatly diminishes. Two I/O planes provide a buffering capability and reduce the date I/O overhead. In addition, using the by-passing path provides eight-way connectivity even with four links. with these salient features. SliM shows a significant performance improvement. This paper presents architectures of a PE and the SliM Image Processor, and describes the design of an instruction set.

  • This paper focuses on the study of complete dynamic modeling and maximum dynamic load carrying capacity computation of N-flexible links and N-flexible joints mobile manipulator undergoing large deformation. Nonlinear dynamic analysis relies on the Timoshenko theory of beams. In order to model the system completely and precisely, structural and joint flexibility, nonlinear strain-displacement relationship, payload, and non-holonomic constraints will be considered to. A finite element solution method based on mixed method is applied to model the shear deformation. This procedure is considerably more involved than displacement based element and shear deformation can be readily included without inducing the shear locking in the element. Another goal of this paper is to present a computational procedure for determination of the maximum dynamic load of geometrically nonlinear manipulators with structural and joint flexibility. An effective measure named as Moment-Height Stability (MHS) measure is applied to consider the dynamic stability of a wheeled mobile manipulator. Simulations are performed for mobile base manipulator with two flexible links and joints. The results represent that dynamic stability constraint is sensitive when calculating the maximum carrying load. Furthermore, by changing the trajectory of end effector, allowable load also changes. The effect of torsional spring parameter on the joint deformation is investigated in a parametric sensitivity study. The findings show that, by the increase of torsional stiffness, the behavior of system approaches to a system with rigid joints and allowable load of robot is also enhanced. A comparison is also made between the results obtained from small and large deformation models. Fluctuation range in obtained figures for angular displacement of links and end effector path is bigger for large deformation model. Experimental results are also provided to validate the theoretical model and these have good agreement with the simulated results.

  • The numerical investigations have been carried out on deep beam with opening subjected to static monotonic loading to demonstrate the accuracy and effectiveness of the finite element based numerical models. The simulations were carried out through finite element program ABAQUS/CAE and the results thus obtained were validated with the experiments available in literature. Six simply supported beams were modelled with two square openings of 200 and 250 mm sides considered as opening at centre, top and bottom of the beam. In order to define the material behaviour of concrete and reinforcing steel bar the Concrete Damaged Plasticity model and Johnson-Cook material parameters available in literature were employed. The numerical results were compared with the experiments in terms of ultimate failure load, displacement and von-Mises stresses. In addition to that, seventeen beams were simulated under static loading for studying the effect of opening location, size and shape of the opening and depth, span and shear span to depth ratio of the deep beam. In general, the numerical results accurately predicted the pattern of deformation and displacement and found in good agreement with the experiments. It was concluded that the structural response of deep beam was primarily dependent on the degree of interruption of the natural load path. An increase in opening size from 200 to 250 mm size resulted in an average shear strength reduction of 35%. The deep beams having circular openings undergo lesser deflection and thus they are preferable than square openings. An increase in depth from 500 mm to 550 mm resulted in 78% reduced deflection.

  • Machinery enclosures are widely adopted to reduce the noise emission in various fields of application. Emitted noise, which is due to the vibration of enclosure's outer surface, is composed of two kinds of sound with different path of propagation. One is the "structure-borne sound", while the other is "air-borne sound". In order to get a most efficient machinery enclouser a prudent consideration upon the above structure-borne and air-borne sound is required, as the guiding principle of contermeasure for each noise is quite different. The controlling of input vibration and its isolation are major subjects for the structure-borne sound, and the specifications of absorbing members and damping panels are the major related matters for the air-borne sound. Hence, it seems very efficient to separate the total sounds into two categories with a great accuracy when one think of further reduction of noise from the existing enclosure, although its separating methods have not been made clear for many years. Author proposes an application method of experimental modal analysis to extract the structure-borne sound from the measured total radiation sound, as the air-borne sound is deduced by the vectorial difference between the measured total radiation sound and the calculated structure-borne sound. In order to calculate the correct structure-borne sound by the excitation at an arbitrary point on the enclosure structure, it is important to decide 1) how to estimate the enclosure's surface vibration velocity and 2) how to compute the radiation sound which is considered as the effect of vibration modes of enclosure surface. The former can be solved with total frequency response function calculated by the application of experimental modal analysis. The latter is to be solved by the author's new approaches for radiation sound computation by means of the Rayleigh's integral equation and the boundary-element method applied complex surface vibration velocity. As a first step, structure-borne sound by the excitation at an arbitry point on the rectangular plate with fixed edges, has been calculated to verified the reliability of the developed computation methods. The results of calculation show good agreements with those of the actual measurements.actual measurements.

  • XML data generally consists of a hierarchical tree-structure which is reflected in mechanisms to store and retrieve XML data. Therefore, when storing XML data in the database, the hierarchical relationships among the XML elements are taken into consideration during the restructuring and storing of the XML data. Also, in order to support the search queries from the user, a mechanism is needed to compute the hierarchical relationship between the element structures specified by the query. The structural join operation is one solution to this problem, and is an efficient computation method for hierarchical relationships in an in database based on the node numbering scheme. However, in order to process a tree structured XML query which contains a complex nested hierarchical relationship it still needs to carry out multiple structural joins and results in another problem of having a high query execution cost. Therefore, in this paper we provide a preprocessing mechanism for effectively reducing the cost of multiple nested structural joins by applying the concept of equivalence classes and suggest a query path reduction algorithm to shorten the path query which consists of a regular expression. The mechanism is especially devised to reduce path queries containing branch nodes. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce the time requited for processing the path queries to 1/3 of the original execution time.

  • In e-commerce applications, a public key cryptosystem is an important and indispensible element for the basic security operations such as authentication, digital signaturing, and key distribution. In wired network environments, the public key infrastructure certificate, which is based on X.509 specification, has been widely used. On the other hand, it still remains difficult to use the certificate information in wireless network environments due to the inherent limitations of the hand-held devices such as low computational power and short battery life. In this paper, we facilitate a codesign approach by implementing a software public-key cryptosystem and classifying its internal computation overheads quantitatively using a software profiling technique. Moreover, we propose a method to analyze the profiled data and apply it to the problem of software/hardware partitioning in a codesign approach. As an illustrative example, we analyze the computational overheads of an EC-Elfagamal application and examine a critical computational path.

  • A two-dimensional systolic array for fast Fourier transform, which has a regular and recursive VLSI architecture is presented. The array is constructed with identical processing elements (PE) in mesh type, and due to its modularity, it can be expanded to an arbitrary size. A processing element consists of two data routing units, a butterfly arithmetic unit and a simple control unit. The array computes FFT through three procedures` I/O pipelining, data shuffling and butterfly arithmetic. By utilizing parallelism, pipelining and local communication geometry during data movement, the two-dimensional systolic array eliminates global and irregular commutation problems, which have been a limiting factor in VLSI implementation of FFT processor. The systolic array executes a half butterfly arithmetic based on a distributed arithmetic that can carry out multiplication with only adders. Also, the systolic array provides 100% PE activity, i.e., none of the PEs are idle at any time. A chip for half butterfly arithmetic, which consists of two BLC adders and registers, has been fabricated using a 3-um single metal P-well CMOS technology. With the half butterfly arithmetic execution time of about 500 ns which has been obtained b critical path delay simulation, totla FFT execution time for 1024 points is estimated about 16.6 us at clock frequency of 20MHz. A one-PE chip expnsible to anly size of array is being fabricated using a 2-um, double metal, P-well CMOS process. The chip was layouted using standard cell library and macrocell of BLC adder with the aid of auto-routing software. It consists of around 6000 transistors and 68 I/O pads on 3.4x2.8mm\ulcornerarea. A built-i self-testing circuit, BILBO (Built-In Logic Block Observation), was employed at the expense of 3% hardware overhead.

  • This paper presents a continuum-based shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method for crack propagation problems using a reproducing kernel method(RKM), which facilitates the remeshing problem required for finite element analysis(FEA) and provides the higher order shape functions by increasing the continuity of the kernel functions. A linear elasticity is considered to obtain the required stress field around the crack tip for the evaluation of J-integral. The sensitivity of displacement field and stress intensity factor(SIF) with respect to shape design variables are derived using a material derivative approach. For efficient computation of design sensitivity, an adjoint variable method is employed tather than the direct differentiation method. Through numerical examples, The mesh-free and the DSA methods show excellent agreement with finite difference results. The DSA results are further extended to a shape optimization of crack propagation problems to control the propagation path.
