  • The conception of the passive lossless snubber with the simpler is presented. Thus a necessity condition of the passive lossless soft switching converter with the simplest topology is directed. A novel passive regenerative snubber called soft snubber applied to a hard switching converter is proposed. The passive snubber consists of a snubber inductor, two snubber rectifiers, and a snubber capacitor. The losses are reduced by inserting a snubber inductor in the series path of the rectifier during it's turn off. It is so simple that can make energy reset or capacitor discharged directly without producing any current circulation. To show the superiority of this converter is verified through the experiment with a 640W, 100kHz prototype converter.

  • This paper presents boost and buck and buck-boost DC-DC converter circuit topologies of high-frequency soft switching transition PWM chopper type DC-DC high power converters with a single auxiliary passive resonant snubber. In the proposed boost power converter circuits operating under a principle of ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation schemes, the capacitor and inductor in the auxiliary passive resonant circuit works as the loss less resonant snubber. In addition to this, the switching voltage and current peak stresses as well as EMI and RFI noises can be basically reduced by this single passive resonant snubber. Moreover, it is proved that converter circuit topologies with a passive resonant snubber are capable of solving some problems of the conventional hard switching PWM processing based on high-ferquency pulse modulation operation principle. The simulation results of this converter are discussed as compared with the experimental ones. The effectiveness of this power converter with a single passive resonant snubber is verified by the 5kW experimental breadboad set up.

  • This paper presents a new circuit topology of high-frequency soft switching commutation boost type PWM chopper-fed DC-DC power converter with a loadside auxiliary passive resonant snubber. In the proposed boost type chopper-fed DC-DC power converter circuit operating under a principle of ZCS turn-on and ZVS turn-off commutation, the capacitor and inductor in the auxiliary passive resonant circuit works as the lossless resonant snubber. In addition to this, the voltage and current peak stresses of the power semiconductor devices as well as their di/dt or dv/dt dynamic stress can be effectively reduced by the single passive resonant snubber treated here. Moreover, it is proved that chopper-fed DC-DC power converter circuit topology with an auxiliary passive resonant snubber could solve some problems on the conventional boost type hard switching PWM chopper-fed DC-DC power converter. The simulation results of this converter are illustrated and discussed as compared with the experimental ones. The feasible effectiveness of this soft witching DC-DC power converter with a single passive resonant snubber is verified by the 5kW, 20kHz experimental breadboard set up to be built and tested for new energy utilization such as solar photovoltaic generators and fuel sell generators.

  • In this paper, an improved passive snubber is investigated in a single-phase single-stage full-bridge boost power factor correction (PFC) converter, by which the voltage spike across primary side of the power transformer can be suppressed and the absorbed energy can be transferred to the output side. When compared with the basic passive snubber, the two single-inductors are replaced by a coupled-inductor in the improved snubber. As a result, synchronous resonances in the snubber can be achieved, which can avoid the unbalance of the voltage and current in the snubber. The operational principle of the improved passive snubber is analyzed in detail based on a single-phase PFC converter, and the design considerations of both the snubber and the coupled-inductor are given. Finally, a laboratory-made prototype is built, and the experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed method and the validity of the theoretical analysis and design method.

  • This paper describes the improvement in converter efficiency by reducing the switching loss and by recovering the snubber stored energy. A capacitive based passive regenerative snubber circuit is modeled for a dc-dc boost converter. The proposed snubber is mainly used to reduce the turn-off loss of the main switch. The energy recovery process and the turn-off loss depends on the size of the snubber capacitance; therefore, the conventional and the proposed converters are designed for high and low input voltage conditions with different sizes of the snubber capacitance. Based on the results obtained, the snubber capacitors are classified as small, normal and large snubbers. The Matlab simulation results obtained are presented.

  • The main switch of high-frequency boost converter may be failed because the high switching current or voltage can damage this switch. The high switching stress can be reduced by snubber circuit. In this paper, a new passive snubber circuit which can recover trapped snubber energy without added control is proposed for boost converter. The control of boost converter with proposed snubber is the same as the conventional one. In addition, the energy recovery circuit can be implemented with a few passive components. The analysis for proposed circuit is presented, and the validity of the circuit is verified through simulation and experiment.

  • In this paper, a new passive lossless snubber circuit with energy transfer capability is proposed. The proposed lossless snubber circuit provides Zero-Current Switching (ZCS) condition for turn-on instants and Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) condition for turn-off instants. In addition, its diodes operate under soft switching condition. Therefore, no significant switching losses occur in the converter. Since the energy of the snubber circuit is transferred to the output, there are no significant conduction losses. The proposed snubber circuit can be applied on isolated and non-isolated converters. To verify the operation of the snubber circuit, a boost converter using the proposed snubber is implemented at 70W. Also, the measured conducted Efficiency Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) of the proposed boost converter and conventional ones are presented which show the effects of proposed snubber on EMI reduction. The experimental results confirm the presented theoretical analysis.

  • In this paper a novel passive snubber is proposed, which can suppress the voltage spike across the bridge leg of the isolated full-bridge boost topology. The snubber is composed of capacitors, inductors and diodes. Two capacitors connected in series are used to absorb the voltage spike and the energy of each capacitor can be transferred to the load during one switching cycle by the resonance of the inductors and capacitors. The operational principle of the passive snubber is analyzed in detail based on a three-phase power factor correction (PFC) converter, and the design considerations of both the converter and the snubber are given. Finally, a 3kW laboratory-made prototype is built. The experimental results verify the theoretical analysis and evaluations. They also prove the validity and feasibility of the proposed methods.

  • A passive energy recovery snubber for high-power-factor boost rectifier, in which the main switch is implemented with a MOSFET, is described in terms of the equivalent circuits that are operational during turn-on and turn-off sequences. These equivalent circuits are analyzed so that the overshoot voltage across the main switch, the snubber current, and the turn-off transition time can be predicted analytically. From these results, the normalized overshoot voltage is reduced to 1 as $_W2T_on$ varies from zero to $\pi$/2, and then it is fIxed at 1 for $_W2T_on$> $\pi$/2. The peak snubber inductor current is directly proportional to the input current. The turn-offtransition time wltoffvaries from 0 to 2.57, depending on $_W2T_on$. The main switch combined with proposed snubber can be turned on with zero current and turned off at limited voltage stress. The high-power-factor boost rectifier with proposed snubber is implemented, and the experimental results are presented to confirm the validity of proposed snubber.
