  • To set up the arrays system of FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) Hydrophone sensor and realize the multi-point signal detection for the wide scope underwater, using WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) method and Passive band-pass filter system, underwater acoustic signal detection of the newly designed two FBG Transducers is successfully experimented. As a result of the experiment, it was possible each signal with different frequent signals is detected for the multi-point up to 1.3KHz in underwater. We can, therefore, prove the possibility on the system design of Hydrophone sensor arrays, using the newly made FBG Transducers.

  • In this paper, we propose the modified SED (Subband Energy Detection) which can assign weights adapting to the receiving signal level for the broadband energy detection in the passive SONARs. SED which is one of the broadband processing mainly employed by passive SONARs to detect a target is more robust against interference like multi signals or a clutter than CED (Conventional Energy Detection), but it degrades detection performance to assign weights independent of extracted extrema level of the receiving signal. Therefore, in this paper, the weighting method which can efficiently assigns rewards or penalties adapting to extracted extrema level of the receiving signal is proposed. In order to evaluate the performance of proposed method, we conducted experiments by using simulation and real ocean acoustic signal which is acquired from Yellow Sea. From the experiments, our proposed method has shown better performance than conventional SED.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast detection and identification algorithm of chemical gases with a passive FTIR spectrometer. We use a pre-detection algorithm that can reduce the spatial region effectively for gas detection and the candidates of the target. It is possible to remove background spectra effectively from measured spectra with the least-squares method. The CC(Correlation Coefficients) and the SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio) methods are used for the detection of target gases. The proposed pre-detection algorithm allows the total process of chemical gas detection to be performed with lower complexity compared with the conventional algorithms. This paper can help developing real-time chemical detection instruments and various applications of FTIR spectrometers.

  • Recently, ship hull-mounted passive sonar system solution is needed in the perspective of improving target detection and elimination of vibration-induced noise. Our research team suggests acousticvibration matching method using front and rear signal of a sensor as the improvement of the problem above. Thus in this paper, theoretical background about matching method and its application on finite element method based multi-physics simulation are described. Furthermore, it is shown that target detection and hull vibration performance are improved by using matching method under the condition of our sensor system. Finally, practicality and future research are discussed.

  • In a passive sonar, the improvement of detection performance by using noise cancellation is usually a important problem. In this paper, we have analyzed the own-ship noise cancellation in the two operation modes which are used in the HMS system. In the operator mode, an adaptive line enhancer(ALE) is applied to improve the tonal detection by using broadband noise cancellation and the normalized least mean square(NLMS) algorithm is applied to the design of an adaptive filter. The reference input that is correlated with a primary input can be used to remove the noise incident on the observation directionin the automatic mode. Computer simulations with real sea that data show that the proposed adaptive noise canceller has good performance in passive detection under HMS operation.

  • The feasibility of passive detection of fishes which had been caught in the fishing grounds near the Korean peninsula was theoretically investigated. Considering the commercial importance and the acoustical informations readily identified, although many species of fish make noise, Croaker is clarified to be a representative fish for passive fish detection. Assuming a source level of the sound produced by croakers is given as 150-18OdB (re 1l'pa, 500 Hz bandwidth), The range detected by a passive line array sonar is estimated to be about 3-20km. In addition, the tonal noise (700~800Hz) made by croaker that is easily separated from underwater noise is expected to increase the ability to discriminate from the other species of fish.

  • Immobilization of conducting nanoparticles on a nanogap comprising two electrodes spaced at a distance comparable to the particle size can be used as a simple and sensitive method of detecting the particles. In this work, we have examined the performance of the nanogap devices in the measurement of metallic nanoparticles, particularly gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Detection of pM-level Au NPs in an aqueous suspension was quite straightforward irrespective of the existence of non-conducting materials. Speed of detection or the time necessary for the completion of the measurement, however, was strongly dependent upon the immobilization process. Active trapping process was found to be much more efficient and also effective in the detection of nanoparticles than its passive counterpart.

  • This paper proposes a detection method of position of OFF-switch. Each switch has the parallel path with a serial combination of passive element, its parallel path has each different frequency characteristics. Frequency characteristic of ON-switch reveals a flat spectrum irrelevant to frequency characteristic of passive element connected in parallel to its each terminal and frequency characteristic of OFF-switch reveals the same characteristic as one of passive element connected in parallel. Detection of position of OFF-switch is done by measuring the similarity of each spectrum corresponding to frequency characteristic of passive element connected in parallel to OFF-switch. The measure of their similarity is to calculate Euclidean distance between their test spectrum and reference spectrum. The spectrum with the smallest distance among reference spectrum is recognized as the spectrum of OFF-switch. The real time digital signal processing system is implemented to detect the position of OFF-switch by using spectrum matching.

  • The prediction of detection range of a passive sonar system is essential to estimate the performance and to optimize the operation of a developed sonar system. In this paper, a model for the prediction of detection range in a range-dependent ocean environment based on the sonar equation is developed and tested. The prediction model calculates the transmission loss using PE propagation model, signal excess, and the detection probability at each target depth and range. The detection probability is integrated to give the estimated detection range. In order to validate the developed model, two cases are considered. One is the case when target depth is known. The other is the case when the target depth is unknown. The computational results agree well with the previously published results for the range-independent environment. Also, the developed model is applied to the range-dependent ocean environment where the warm eddy exists. The computational results are shown and discussed. The developed model can be used to find the optimal frequency of detection, as well as the optimal search depth for the given range-dependent ocean environment.

  • This paper presents methods of robot localization using recent radio frequency identification technology. If the absolute position and orientation of a tag are given in an indoor environment where RFID tags are installed, a robot can estimate its location using the relationship of the identified tag and the robot in a relative coordinate. To derive this relationship, we propose three estimation techniques using a model of a RFID reader, the direction of identification and the detection range. In this algorithm, a suitable estimation method is selected out of the three proposed techniques depending on the situations and trajectory of robot in the detection range. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed methods can provide good performance for localization.
