The purpose of this study is to analyze the state-of-the-art housing cases with passive cooling technologies and to explore the feasibilities for their applications in domestic housing design. Nineteen Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design housing cases from 2002 to 2007 were selected and analyzed their used passive cooling technologies. Besides traditional passive cooling technologies such as site planning according to the sun direction, the use of thermal mass, insulation, shading, below-ground spaces and ventilation, the relatively new technology trends were detected as followings; the use of high performance envelope, operable windows, and geo-thermal energy as the cooling source of heat pumps, increased areas of photovoltaic cells, and the education of the owner and tenants about the adopted passive cooling technologies in a building. Especially, the education may have not been focused in the domestic design despite of its effectiveness on the appropriate operations of passive cooling technologies. The results of this study show their positive adaptations would be beneficial to domestic housing design to reduce energy costs and have cooler housing environments in summer.
Passive House represents energy-saving technologies. It aims to save energy and provide comfort to the dwellers. The design and construction began in Germany, where it is commonly observed. In South Korea, implementation of the Passive House concept is difficult because of high construction costs and technological problems. This study performed a POE analysis to analyze the extents of satisfaction and knowledge about Passive House among those who live in them in Germany. The results found high satisfaction with functional aspects, such as ventilation, windows, doors, and the thermal bridge. These research results will provide application criteria for Passive House construction in South Korea.
In the past few years, the subject of passive heating has been the major area of our concern due to the specific climate conditions prevailing in our region. More recently, however, other important issues such as retrofitting, passive cooling, optimized integration of conservation and passive solar, and daylighting have emerged as the areas of frequent discussions. KIER, the sole R&D organization in solar energy technologies, has accomplished significant results in passive building designs and actual demonstrations of experimental passive buildings. As a result of such endeavor by KIER, the passive solar buildings have been very well received by the Korean public. The current number of passive solar buildings in Korea is well over 1,600 (as of Dec. 1986). In this paper, broad aspects of the present status of passive solar technology utilization in Korea are presented.

The increasing demand for high density packaging technologies and the evolution to mixed digital and analogue devices has been the con-set of increasing research in thin film multi-layer technologies such as the passive components integration technology. In this paper, Cu and TaO thin film with RF sputtering was deposited for spiral inductor and MOM capacitor on the $SiO_2$/Si(100) substrate. MOM capacitor and spiral inductor were fabricated for L-C band pass filter by sputtering and lift-off. We are analyzed and designed thin films L-C passive components for band pass filter at 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz, important devices for mobile communication system. Based on the high-Q values of passive components, MOM capacitor and spiral inductors for L-C band pass filter, a low insertion loss of L-C passive components can be realized with a minimized chip area. The insertion loss was 3 dB for a 1.8 GHz filter, and 5 dB for a 900 MHz filter. This paper also discusses a analysis and practical design to thin-film L-C band pass filter.
Purpose: In this paper, we propose a direction of future research and development to be carried out in the passive tracking field by deriving a white space with enhanced search formula of patent analysis. Method: In this paper, we derive a white space by identifying the direction and the flow of technology change and by matrixing the object and solution through extensive patent search with enhanced search formula and analysis in the field of passive tracking technology. Result: By the proposed scheme, 'multi-target positioning and tracking' and '3D positioning technology' using artificial intelligence, adaptive/hybrid positioning technology, and radar/antenna were derived as white space technologies and confirmed with absence of any services or products. Conclusion: The derived white space technologies from this paper are the areas where patent applications are not active and there are not many prior patents, thus it is necessary to secure the rights through more active R&D and patent application activities.

This paper reviews the optical link technologies which have been developed for gigabit-per-second wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PONs). Similarly to the 100Mb/s WDM-PON systems which have been deployed for trial services by KT, the most important requirement for 1Gb/s WDM-PON is wavelength independence (colorless feature) of its ONU/ONTs, which makes possible convenient operation and cost-effective maintenance with minimum inventory cost. Among various methods to implement such colorless feature, four promising candidates for gigabit WDM-PON are analyzed with their own development issues and their expected performances are compared.

The impact of booster section length made from passive erbium-doped fiber (EDF) on the L-band multiwavelength Brillouin-Erbium fiber laser (MBEFL) is studied experimentally in this paper. The influence on the performance of MBEFL in term of number of generated Stokes lines, tuning range and lasing threshold were investigated. A comparison was made between MBEFL without a booster section and with booster sections of different lengths. Through comparative study and at fixed BP power and 100mW of 1480 pump power, longer passive EDF length of 5m exhibits the highest average number of Stokes lines of 23 with tuning range of 14nm. In contrast, shorter passive EDF length of 1m shows the highest tuning range of 17nm and an average number of 21 Stokes lines.
This study was conducted as a basic study for the selection of tags suitable for logistics management in the palletized unit-load unit and the development of various technologies to activate the palletized unit-load shipment of agricultural products through local APCs. Three types of passive RFID tags of UHF 900 MHz and one type of active RFID tag of 2.4 GHz band designed and manufactured through this study were used to analyze the receiving strength according to the tag's attachment location and distance of the palletized unit-load of agricultural products. In the passive RFID tag, there was a large difference in receiving strength by the tag's attachment location and a large amount of data loss depending on the distance within 30 m, whereas, in the active RFID tag, it was superior to the passive tags in terms of both receiving strength and data loss. Therefore, active tags are desirable from the perspective of multiple identification of warehouses with large spaces in relation to the application of RFID tags for palletized unit-loads of agricultural products, but the development of low-power technologies such as software wakeup power management as well as hardware to minimize battery power consumption is necessary.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of passive transfer status, determined by measuring serum immunoglobulin (Ig) concentration 24 hours after parturition, on growth performance in buffalo calves allowed to nurse the dam during the first month of life. Serum Ig concentration 24 hours after birth ranged from 28.1 to 35.9 mg/ml, birth weight ranged from 29 to 41 kg, body weight 30 days after birth ranged from 48.5 to 62.9 kg. The Average Daily Gain (ADG) from birth to day 30 ranged from 448 to 1,089 g/d. Significant linear associations were detected between serum Ig concentration 24 hours after birth and day-30 weight (p< 0.05; $R^2$ = 0.31) and between serum Ig concentration 24 hours after birth and ADG from birth to day 30 (p<0.001; $R^2$ = 0.72). Results indicated that passive transfer status was a significant source of variation in growth performance when buffalo calves nursed the dam. Maximizing passive transfer of immunity by allowing calves to nurse the dam can increase growth performance during the first month of life.

This research aims to develop core technologies for passive carrier (no power in carrier itself) transfer system. The technologies are passive levitation, propulsion, and guidance, which can be great benefits for semiconductor and display manufacturing industries. Passive maglev carrier is necessary to precise position control for quiet and stable transfer operation. However, the structural characteristics of carrier and the installation errors of gap sensors cause the pitch motion. Hence, the controller design in consideration of pitch motion is required. This study deals with the reduction control of carrier pitch motion. PDA controller and PDA controller with pitch control are proposed to compare the pitch angle analysis. The pitch angle and the levitation precision are measured by experiment. Finally, the optimized design of pitch controller is presented and the effects are discussed.
