  • Effects of magnesium and pH on corrosion of aluminum galvanically coupled to iron have studied by using potentio- dynamic and static tests for polarization curves, Mott-Schottky test for analysis of semiconductor property, and GD-AES and XPS for film analysis. Pitting potential was sensitive to magnesium as an alloying element but not to pH, while passive current was sensitive to pH but not to magnesium. It was explained with, instead of point defect model (PDM), surface charge model describing that the ingression of chloride depends on the state of surface charge and passive film at film/solution interface is affected by pH. In addition, galvanic current of aluminum electrically coupled to iron was not affected by magnesium in pH 8.4, 0.2M citrate solution but was increased by magnesium at the solution of pH 9.1. The galvanic current at pH 9.1 increased with time at the initial stage and after the exposure of about 200 minute, decreased and stabilized. The behavior of the galvanic current was related with the concentration of magnesium at the surface. It agreed with the depletion of magnesium at the oxide surface by using glow discharge atomic emission spectroscopy (GD-AES). In addition, pitting potential of pure aluminum was reduced in neutral pH solution where chloride ion maybe are competitively adsorbed on pure aluminum. It was confirmed by the exponential decrease of pitting potential with log of [$Cl^-$] around 0.025 M of [$Cl^-$] and linear decrease of the pitting potential. From the above results, unlike magnesium, alloying elements with higher electron negativity, lowering isoelectric point (ISE), are recommended to be added to improve pitting corrosion resistance of aluminum and its alloys in neutral solutions as well as their galvanic corrosion resistance in weakly basic solutions.

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate the corrosion resistance and characteristics of passive layer between naturally passivated and chemically passivated duplex stainless steel, UNS S31803 (EN 1.4462) using CPT, XPS, and EIS. The treatment of $HNO_3$(II) and $HNO_3$(III) in ASTM A 967 was applied. In case of chemically passivated specimen, CPT of $HNO_3$(II) and $HNO_3$(III) were higher than that of naturally passivated specimen. In addition, from XPS results, the protectiveness index (Cr/(Fe+Cr)) of chemically passivated specimens was also higher than that of naturally passivated specimen. The reason for this result is considered due to post-cleaning treatment in chemical passivation process, that is, immersion in $Na_2Cr_3O_7$ solution. The fact that $HNO_3$(II) passivation treatment showed the highest film resistance and 'n', which is exponent related with constant phase element (CPE) of passivation film, was in good agreement with results of CPS and XPS. The chemical passivation treatment was an effective method to improve corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steel.

  • During the process of sulfur dioxide removal, flue gas desulfurization equipment provides a serious internal corrosion environment in creating sulfuric acid dew point corrosion. Therefore, the utilities must use the excellent corrosion resistance of steel desulfurization facilities in the atmosphere. Until now, the trend in developing anti-sulfuric acid steels was essentially the addition of Cu, in order to improve the corrosion resistance. The experimental alloy used in this study is Fe-0.03C-1.0Mn-0.3Si-0.15Ni-0.31Cu alloys to which Ru, Zn and Ta were added. In order to investigate the effect of $H_2SO_4$ concentration and the alloying elements, chemical and electrochemical corrosion tests were performed. In a low concentration of $H_2SO_4$ solution, the major factor affecting the corrosion rate of low alloy steels was the exchange current density for $H^+/H_2$ reaction, while in a high concentration of $H_2SO_4$ solution, the major factors were the thin and dense passive film and resulting passivation behavior. The alloying elements reducing the exchange current density in low concentration of $H_2SO_4$, and the alloying elements decreasing the passive current density in high concentration of $H_2SO_4$, together play an important role in determining the corrosion rate of Cu-bearing low alloy steels in a wide range of $H_2SO_4$ solution.

  • NiTi alloy has been used for orthodontic wire due to good mechanical properties, such as elastic strength, friction resistance, and high corrosion resistance. Recently, these wire were coated by polymer and ceramic materials for aesthetics. The purpose of this study was to investigate electrochemical characteristics of tooth colored NiTi wire using various instruments. Wires (round type and rectangular type) were used, respectively, for experiment. Polymer coating was carried out for wire. Specimen was investigated with optical microscopy (OM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The corrosion properties of the specimens were examined using potentiodynamic tests (potential range of -1500 ~ 2000 mV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (frequency range of 100 kHz ~ 10 mHz) in a 0.9 % NaCl solution by potentiostat. From the results of polarization behavior, the passive region of non-coated NiTi wire showed largely, whereas, the passive region of curved NiTi wire showed shortly in anodic polarization curve. In the case of coated NiTi wire, pitting and crevice corrosion occurred severely at interface between non-coated and coated region. From the results of EIS, polarization resistance(Rp) value of non-coated round and rectangular NiTi wire at curved part showed $5.10{\times}10^5{\Omega}cm^2$ and $4.43{\times}10^5{\Omega}cm^2$. lower than that of coated NiTi wire. $R_p$ of coated round and rectangular NiTi wire at curved part showed $1.31{\times}10^6{\Omega}cm^2$ and $1.19{\times}10^6{\Omega}cm^2$.

  • The repassivation characteristics of Fe-Cr steels in deaerated 0.1 M $Na_2SO_4$ solution have been investigated with the variation of Cr content, applied potential and Cl- concentration. In the absence of chloride ion, abrading electrode test showed that, slope -n, of log i=k -n log t, a parameter of repassivation rate, approached to -1, regardless of Cr content but as Cr content increased, repassivation current density decreases with increasing Cr content. A.C. Impedance spectroscopy showed that the charge transfer resistance of passive film became higher as Cr content and applied potential increased. However, in the presence of chloride ion, it was observed that chloride ion suppressed the passive film formation, whose effect became greater with increasing applied potential.

  • This paper was studied on corrosion characteristics of gas absorption refrigeration & hot water system using $LiBr-H_2O$ working fluids. In the $62\%$ lithium bromide solution at $60^{\circ}C$, polarization test of Cu, $10\%$ cupronickel($90-10\%$ Cu-Ni) and $30\%$ cupronickel($70-30\%$ Cu-Ni) tube was carried out. And polarization behavior, polarization resistance characteristics, open circuit potential, anodic polarization of heat exchanger tube for gas absorption refrigeration & hot water system were considered. The main results are as following: 1) Polarization resistance of heat exchange tubes appears high in order of $30\%$ cupronickel tube > $10\%$ cupronickel tube > Cu tube. B) Open circuit potential of cupronickel tube is more noble than that of Cu tube, and corrosion current density of cupronickel is controlled than Cu tube. 3) Potential of passive region of $30\%$ cupronickel tube is more wide than that of $10\%$ cupronickel tube, and the passivation critical current of $30\%$ cupronickel tube is lower than that of $10\%$ cupronickel tube.

  • AISI 304 stainless steel has high resistance to corrosion due to the presence of a self-healing chromium oxide film on the surface, which also accounts for the difficulty in plating. Surface cleaning of this alloy is of fundamental importance in gold plating since its effectiveness puts an upper limit on the quality of the final coating. The cleaning of AISI 304 stainless steel was investigated with elimination of artificial passive oxide film and degreasing of remaining buffing wax as stearic acid. The familiar cleaning methods i.e. ultrasonic cleaning, electro-cleaning and activation treatment were fabricated in this study. Activation treatment showed best cleaning efficiency for elimination of passive oxide film among these methods, which was also confirmed by AES (Auger electron spectrometer) analysis. However, the best condition of cleaning was obtained by combining these methods. Electrocleaning time, for degreasing the stearic acid layer, was decreased with increasing amount of added KCN.

  • This study performed experiments for measuring corrosion potential and current density variations in the polarzation curves of polyvinylchloride. The results were examined to identify particular influences affectingthe corrosion potential such as temperature, pH, enzyme, and salt. The lines representing active anodic dissolution were only slightly shifted in the potential direction by temperature, pH, enzyme and salt. The Tafel slope for the anodic dissolution was determined using the polarization effect with varying conditions. The slope of the polarization curves describing the active-to-passive transition region was noticeably shifted in the potential direction. In addition, using the variation in conditions, the best temperature and pH were determined for the corrosion rate, and resistance of corrosion. The second anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density were designated as degraded(IP/I0). The value of IP/I0 was used in measuring the extent of the degradation of the polyvinychloride. The potentiodynamic parameters of the corrosion were obtained using a Tafel plot.

  • Experiments were carried out to measure variations in the oxidation potential and current density using the polarization curves of polycarbonate. The results were then examined to identify the influences affecting the oxidation potential related to various conditions, such as temperature, pH, and oxydase(citrate and lipase). The lines representing the active anodic and cathodic dissolution shifted only slightly in the potential direction relative to temperature, pH, and the effect of the enzyme. The Tafel slope for the anodic and cathodic dissolution was determined such that the reversibility polarization was indicated as being effected by various conditions. The slope of the polarization curves describing the active-to-passive transition region shifted noticeably in their direction. Also, by varying the conditions, the optimum conditions for the most ready transform were identified, including temperature, pH, oxidation rate, and resistance of oxidation potential. The critical oxidation sensitivity(I(sub)r/I(sub)f) of the anodic current density peak and maximum passive current density was also determined, which is used in measuring the critical corrosion sensitivity of a polycarbonate.

  • Chemistry and microstructure of steel reinforcement bars play an important role to control the corrosion in concrete environments. In present study, we have chosen two different microstructure of steel rebars produced from companies and assessed their corrosion characteristics in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution with prolonged exposure periods. Hot rolled steel rebar showed more corrosion resistance compare to thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) one. The growth of passive is greater in hot rolled (A) than TMT (B) due to orientation of microstructure. TMT steel rebar exhibit distorted microstructure with many micro cells which enhances the galvanic coupling and induce the deterioration while on the other hand hot rolled rebars exhibit fine grain boundary which responsible in growth of uniform, adherent and protective passive film resultant improved impedance was observed.
