  • Recently, registrated passenger cars have increased and were close about seventy million at the end 2017 year in Korea. Among the passenger car using gasoline fuel make up forty six percentage of total registrated vehicles. In this study, investigation on real driving emission characteristics in the passenger car using gasoline fuel with various engine displacements were carried out. The real driving emission characteristics were measured and analyzed by using PEMS (Portable Emission Measurement System). PEMS was composed of gas analyzer, emission flow meter and sample conditioning system et al. Also, test six vehicles were selected to the gasoline passenger car with engine displacement from 1.6L to 3.7L. Two test routes with engine start of cold and hot conditions were applied to analyze the emission characteristics of RDE, respectively. The results show that the $CO_2$ emission have a increasing trend as the engine displacement and vehicle weight. Also, it is guessed that the $CO_2$ emission and vehicle weight were more correlated than the engine displacements. On the other hand, NOx emissions of RDE have not increasing or decreasing tendency according engine displacements or vehicle weight because the activation of three-way catalyst in the gasoline vehicles.

  • subway has became citizen's feet which can transport over 24 million people since the era of high oil price started. Because the request of passengers for more comfortable thermal comfort is drastically increasing, the importance of comfortable environment in the passenger car is more stressed. This paper suggests an indicator whether railroad car is fitted with suitable cooling and heating equipment by applying the international climatic testing method, UIC 553, 553-1. Specified ambient temperature, humidity, solar irradiation condition, as well as extreme outside condition, can be achieved by using an environmental chamber. The change temperature and humidity in the passenger space can be monitored to judge if the passenger room is nicely air-conditioned.

  • Thermal comfort inside a passenger car has been receiving large attention in automobile industries. Especially, the performance of windshield defroster is important in the design of a car to ensure passenger comport and safety. Thereby, better understanding on the ventilation flow along the vehicle windshield is essential to evaluate the performance of windshield defroster. However, most previous studies dealt with the defrost flow using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations or scale-down model experiments. In this study, a real commercial automobile was used to investigate the flow discharged from the vehicle defroster and the ventilation flow along the windshield using a PIV velocity field measurement technique. The experimental data would be useful to understand the flow characteristics in detail and also can be used to validate numerical predictions.

  • Rumbling sound is one of the most important interior sound of a passenger cu. The conventional rumbling noise research was focused on the reduction of the A-weighted sound pressure level. However A-weighted sound pressure level can not give the whole story about the rumbling sound of a passenger car. In this paper, we employed sound metric which is the subjective parameter used in psycoacoustics. According to recent research results, the relation between sound metrics and subjective evaluation is very complex and has nonlinear characteristics. In order to estimate this nonlinear relationship, artificial neural network th[ ory has been applied to derivation of sound quality index fur rumbling sound of a passenger car.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey colors of background, marker, and pointer being used in passenger car's combination meter, and to suggest ergonomic design guidelines of combination meter to enhance driver's readability. An experiment was conducted, in which colors of background, marker, and pointer were selected as independent variables, and reading time, reading error, and preference for combination meter were measured as dependent variables. Most of passenger cars sold in Korea were found to have combination meter with black background, while marker. The experimental results showed that reading time of combination meter with white background, black marker and point was shortest, reading error was lowest in combination meter with black background, yellow marker pointer, and preference for combination meter with white background, black marker and black or red pointer was highest. The results implied that combination meter with white background, black marker and black pointer should be used for comprehensively optimizing reading time, reading error, and preference for it. It was expected that these results could be used as valuable design guidelines when designing combination meter of passenger car.

  • Objective: The ride qualities of the six passenger cars were evaluated in 4 subjects on the highway and uneven road. The relation between vibration with driving velocity and driving posture were also investigated separately. Background: Ride comfort plays an important role in the vehicle design. Vibration is the one of the principal components associated with ride comfort. Method: The acceleration of the foot, hip and back were measured using B&K accelerometers in this study. The velocity of the passenger cars was maintained at a constant speed of 80km/h on the highway and 40km/h on the uneven road. For evaluating the effects of driving velocity and driving posture on vehicle's vibration level, separate experiments were performed on the highway with 5 different vehicle speeds and 5 different backrest angles, respectively. Results: The overall ride value of the luxury car showed the best result while the smaller car showed the worst value on the highway. On the uneven road the overall ride value level was increased 75~98%. All the vehicles had the SEAT value less than 1. Faster the velocity lowers the SEAT value. The ride quality in terms of vibration gets worst when the backrest angle increased. Conclusion: The smaller car had a first mode at the higher frequency and showed higher vibration level. SEAT value was mostly affected by the seat property not by vehicle. We ranked the luxury car seat had a best vibration reduction quality than others based on SEAT values. When the driving velocity increased, the overall ride values were increased proportionally and the SEAT values were somewhat decreased. Application: Evaluation of whole-body vibration in the passenger car.

  • Most vehicles have a heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) device to control the thermal condition and to make comfortable environment in the passenger compartment. The improvement of ventilation flow inside the passenger compartment is crucial for providing comfortable environment. For this, better understanding on the variation of flow characteristics of ventilation air inside the passenger compartment with respect to various ventilation modes is strongly required. Most previous studies on the ventilation flow in a car cabin were carried out using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis or scale-down water-model experiments. In this study, whole ventilation flow discharged from the air vent of a real passenger car was measured using a special PIV (particle image velocimetry) system for large-size FOV (field of view). Under real recirculation ventilation condition, the spatial distributions of stream-wise turbulence intensity and mean velocity were measured in the vortical panel-duct center plane under the panel ventilation mode. These experimental data would be useful for understanding the detailed flow structure of real ventilation flow and validating numerical predictions.

  • In this study, an analysis technique using simple beam model for predicting structure crashworthiness of the passenger car side impacted with an angle by another passenger car was investigated. The simple model was composed of major beam-like side structure which carry almost all side impact load. A procedure of component collapse test, calculation of load carrying capability and dynamic simulation was carryed out sequentially. Transient dynamic algorithms and a computer program to simulate deformations and motions of the impacted car was developed. The developed procedure was applied to a 3 door passenger car side impacted with an angle of 75 degree and the analysis results show good agreements with the actual test results.

  • The panel contribution analysis to reduce interior booming noise of a passenger car is carried out using both experimental method and numerical one. The accelerations of panels are measured on the outer surface of car body during operation. The acoustic characteristic of cavity is represented by two different ways. One is the acoustic transfer function obtained by experiment with reciprocal manner. The other is the boundary element model and numerical results of the model are calculated using SYSNOISE. The results from numerical method show more good agreement with measured sound pressure levels than the experimental one. Contributions of panels for interior noise are ranked and structure of the car is reinforced according to the results, which shows that the panel contribution analysis is a powerful tool to lessen structure-borne noise of passenger vehicle.
