  • In this paper, we present a new efficient multi-level hardware/software partitioning algorithm for system-on-a-chip design. Originally the multi-level partitioning algorithm are proposed to enhance the performance of previous iterative improvement partitioning algorithm for large scale circuits. But when designing very complex and heterogeneous SoCs, the HW/SW partitioning decision needs to be made prior to refining the system description. In this paper, we present a new method, based on multi-level algorithm, which can cover SoC design. The different variants of algorithm are evaluated by a randomly generated test graph. The experimental results on test graphs show improvement average $9.85\%$ and $8.51\%$ in total communication costs over FM and CLIP respectively.

  • The temperature dependence of the partition coefficients of a neuropeptide, substance P (SP), in isotropic acidic bicelles was investigated by using a pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance diffusion technique. The addition of negatively charged dimyristoylphosphatidylserine to the neutral bicelle changed the SP partitioning a little, which implies that the hydrophobic interaction between the hydrophobic residues of SP and the acyl chains of lipid molecules is the major interaction while the electrostatic interaction is minor in SP binding in a lipid membrane. From the temperature dependence of the partition coefficients, thermodynamic functions were calculated. The partitioning of SP into the acidic bicelles is enthalpy-driven, as it is for small unilamellar vesicles and dodecylphosphocholine micelles, while peptide partitioning into a large unilamellar vesicle is entropy-driven. This may mean that the size of lipid membranes is a more important factor for peptide binding than the surface curvature and surface charge density.

  • The incineration tests of mixed industrial wastes using the stoker type incinerator are carried out to investigate the partitioning characteristics of heavy metals during incineration. The results obtained from this study are as follow. The partitioning characteristics of heavy metals throughout this incinerator are found that, at given condition of $700^{\circ}C$, the elements with the relatively high boiling point such as Cr, Cu and Pb are partitioned into a bottom ash, a fry ash captured tv cyclone, and a flue gas stream, 67~88%, 2~19% and 6~16% of initial amount entering the incinerator, respectively, but the Cd and Hg of 75~81% is vaporized into the flue gas. It appears that the partitioning characteristics according to the particle size of ash is different between the bottom ash and the fly ash. For bottom ash, the fraction of partitioning into 75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ oversized particles is reatively high. For fly ash, the characteristics of distributions with the particle size can not be clearly shown.

  • In this paper, a new hardware-software patitioning algorithm is presented, in which the system behavioral description containing a mixture of hardware and softwae components is partitioned into the hardware part and the software part. In this research, new techniques to optimally partition a mixed system under certain specified constaints such as performance, area, and delay, have been developed. During the partitioning process, the overhead due to the communication between the hardware and software parts are considered. New featues have been added to adjust the hierarchical level of partitioning. Power consumption, memory cost, and the effect of pipelining can also be considered during partitioning. Another new feature is the ability to partition a DSP system under throughput constraints. This feature is important for real time processing. The developed partitioning system can also be used to evaluate various design alternatives and architectures.

  • In this paper, system performance of turbo trellis coded modulation (turbo TCM) is presented and analyzed through computer simulations over two typical channels, namely additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels. We use and compare different mapping strategies based on Ungerboeck partitioning (UP), block partitioning (BP), mixed partitioning (MP), Gray partitioning (GP), and Ungerboeck-Gray partitioning (UGP) of the signal constellation of the turbo TCM system. Furthermore, taking 8PSK modulation of turbo TCM as an example, our simulation results show that turbo TCM with UP can obtain better performance than turbo TCM with BP, MP, GP, and UGP in both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels.

  • The partitioning tracer method has been studied as an alternative method for characterizing aquifers contaminated by nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). Accurate partition coefficients of tracers partitioning between NAPL and water are needed to improve the reliability of the partitioning tracer method. In this research, partition coefficients of alcohol tracers partitioning between benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) compounds and water are estimated from using the approach of equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN). General agreement was observed in between the measured and estimated partition coefficients. Based on these results we can verify that the EACN approach is suitable for estimating the partition coefficient.

  • In the zigzag milling of a pocket having islands, tool retraction is one of the primary factors that decrease productivity. Therefore, tool path with minimum number of tool retraction has been needed. Most researches about this topic have been concentrated on obtaining the optimum solution formulated through the geometric reasoning off pocket. Recently, several attempts were made to simplify this problem into region partitioning in order to get the numerically expressed minimum solution. In this research, a method reducing the number of tool retractions extended from existing region partitioning is provided. Applying the segment that is normal to the reference direction of zigzag milling, region partitioning is carried out and structural elements of the region are searched via graphs of islands and characteristic points. Through the processes presented, the number of region partitioned is less than that of existing processes.

  • It is important to minimize the number of disk accesses which is necessary to transfer data in disk into main memory when processing transactions in physical database design. A vertical file partitioning method is used to reduce the number of disk accesses by partitioning relations vertically and accessing only necessay fragments. In this paper, SOFM(Self-Organizing Feature Maps) network is used to solve vertical partitioning problems. This paper shows that SOFM network is efficient in solving vertical partitioning problem by comparing approximate solution of SOFM network with optimal solution of N-ary branch and bound method. And this paper presents a heuristic algorithm for allocating duplicate attributes to vertically partitioned fragments. As branch and bound method requires particularly much computing time to solve large-sized problems, it is shown that SOFM network is able to overcome this limitation of branch and bound method and solve large-sized problems efficiently in a short time.

  • In this paper we propose a method, called the range-based cube partitioning (RCP)method for reducing I/O cost of cube computation in OLAP The method improves I/O performance of cube partitioning process by overlapping some computation between partitioning stages. For overlapping the computation, the method partitions the cube based on the ranges of attribute values, not the points of attribute value, Through analysis any experiments, we show the performance of the proposed method with comparison of the previous cube partitioning method.

  • The partitioning behavior of the five printing ink solvents in nine lab-made cookies with various sugar and water content at 25${^{\circ}C}$ was studied to find out the presence and effects of interaction between the two ingredients on partitioning behavior in cookies. Solvents were ethyl acetate, hexane, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone and hexane. It was observed that the partition coefficient (the solvent concentration in food compared to that in air, Kp) decreased as sugar increased in all case and increased as water content increased for all compounds except toluene. Statistical analysis by the F-test method was used to determine the significance of sugar-water interactions, as well as other single factors on partitioning behavior of each solvent. Sugar content alone had no significant effects, but the crystallinity of sugar, as changed by water content, affected the partitioning behavior of the five solvents significantly. Parameter estimation for each significant factor by SAS program yielded a regression equation, which was used to predict the partitioning behavior in the finished cookie. Kp values from the regression equation could be determined more precisely by applying a correction term for the interaction between sugar and water to the Kp values of each ingredient after baking.
