  • Partitioning is an important step in the hierarchical design of very large scale integrated circuits. In this research, a new effective partitioning algorithm based on 2-level hierarchy is presented. At the beginning, clusters are formed to reduce the problem size. To overcome the weakness of the iterative improvement techniques that the partitioning result is dependent on the initial partitioning and to consistently produce good results, the cluster-level partitioning is performed several times using several sets of parameters. Then the best result of cluster-partitioning is used as the initial solution for lower level partitioning. For each partitioning, the gradual constraint enforcing partitioning method has been used. The clustering-based partitioning algorithm has been applied to several benchmark examples and produced promising results which show that this algorithm is efficient and effective.

  • For the remediation of the subsurface contaminated by nonaqueous phase liquids(NAPLs), it is important to characterize the NAPL zone properly. Conventional characterization methods provide data at discrete points. To overcome the weak points of conventional characterization methods, the partitioning tracer method has been developed and studied. The average saturation of NAPL($S_n$), which is the representative and continuous saturation value within contaminated site, can be calculated by comparing the transport of the partitioning tracers to that of the conservative tracer in the partitioning tracer method. In this study, the application of the partitioning tracer method in heterogeneous media was investigated. To represent the heterogeneous condition of subsurface, a two-dimensional soil box was divided into four layers and each layer contained different sized soils. Soils in the soil box were contaminated by the mixture of kerosene and diesel, and partitioning tracer tests were conducted before and after the contamination using methanol as conservative tracer and 4-methyl-2-pentanol, 2-ethyl-1-butanol, and hexanol as partitioning tracers. The response curves of partitioning tracers from contaminated soils were separated and retarded in comparison with those from non-contaminated soils. The contamination of soils by NAPLs, therefore, can be detected by partitioning tracer method considering these retardations of tracers. From our experiment condition, the average saturation of NAPLs calculated by partitioning tracer method using the methanol as conservative tracer and hexanol as partitioning tracer showed the highest accuracy, though all results were underestimated. Further studies, therefore, were needed for improving the accuracy using the partitioning tracer test in heterogeneous media.

  • In multibody dynamics, differential and algebraic equations which can satisfy both equation of motion and kinematic constraint equation should be solved. To solve these equations, coordinate partitioning method and constraint stabilization method are commonly used. In the coordinate partitioning method, the coordinates are divided into independent and dependent and coordinates. The most typical coordinate partitioning method are LU decomposition, QR decomposition, and SVD (singular value decomposition). The objective of this research is to find an efficient coordinate partitioning method in the dynamic analysis of flexible multibody systems. Comparing two coordinate partitioning methods, i.e. LU and QR decomposition in the flexible multibody systems, a new hybrid coordinate partitioning method is suggested for the flexible multibody analysis.

  • The microstructure and dilatation for 0.15C steels were investigated to define the phase transformation during the quenching and partitioning (Q&P) process. For the one step Q&P dilatation, the isothermal martensite/bainite transformation occurred because the holding temperature was between $M_s$ and $M_f$. The isothermally transformed martensite/bainite and the athermally transformed martensite were produced by a loss of retained austenite. As the holding time increased, new martensite-start ($M_s$) temperature produced from the final quenching process decreased due to the carbon partitioning from the martensite to the retained austenite. This was the direct evidence of increment for the retained austenite stability. For the two step Q&P dilatation, the isothermal bainitic transformation occurred because the partitioning temperature was larger than the $M_s$ and new $M_s$. The partitioning at $400^{\circ}C$ indicated the short incubation period for the bainite transformation than the $350^{\circ}C$ partitioning because the partitioning at $400^{\circ}C$ should acquire the larger thermal driving force for carbon partitioning than the $350^{\circ}C$ partitioning. A quick drop of $M_s$ and short period of bainite incubation for the $400^{\circ}C$ partitioning steel were also the direct evidence of significant effects of carbon partitioning on the stability of retained austenite.

  • Innovative and nondestructive characterization techniques have been developed to locate and quantify nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in the vadose and saturated zones in the subsurface environment. One such technique is the partitioning interwell tracer test (PITT). The PITT is a simultaneous displacement of partitioning and non-partitioning tracers through a subsurface formation. Partitioning tracers will partition into the NAPL during their transport through NAPL-contaminated formations. Mean travel times of partitioning and non-partitioning tracers are used to estimate the quantity of NAPL encountered by the displaced tracer pulse. Travel times are directly proportional to the partitioning coefficient and the volume of NAPL contacted in the subsurface environment. This paper discusses the conceptual background, design and implementation of PITTs. • A new partitioning algorithm has been developed to implement a large circuit by using multiple field programmable gate array (FPGA) chips. While the conventional partitioning is to minimze the number of nets cut under size constraints, partitioning for multiple FPGAs has several additional constraints so that each partitioned subcircuit can be implemented in a FPGA chip. To obtain satisfactory results under the constraints, the partitioning is performed in two steps whhich are the intial partitioning for global optimization and the iterative partitioning improvements for constraint satisfaction. Experismental results using the MCNC benchmark examples show that our partition method produces better results thatn those of other recent approaches on the average.

  • In a relational database environment, partitioning of data is directly concerned with the amount of data that needs to be required in a query or transaction. In this paper, we consider non-overlapping, vertical partitioning. Vertical partitioning algorithm in this paper is composed of two phases. In phase 1, we cluster the attributes with zero-one integer program that maximize affinity among attributes. The result of phase 1 is called 'Initial Fragments'. In phase 2, we modify Initial Fragments that is not directly considered by cost factors, making use of a transaction-based partitioning method. A transaction-based partitioning method is partitioning attributes according to a set of transactions. In this phase we select logical accesses which needs to be required in a transaction as comparison criteria. In phase 2, proposed algorithm consider only small number of modification of Initial Fragments in phase 1. This algorithm is so insensible to number of transactions and of attributes that it can applied to relatively large problems easily.

  • In multibody dynamics, DAE(Differential Algebraic Equations) that combine differential equations of motion and kinematic constraint equations should be solved. To solve these equations, either coordinate partitioning method or constraint stabilization method is commonly used. The most typical coordinate partitioning methods are LU decomposition, QR decomposition, and SVD(singular value decomposition). The objective of this research is to suggest a hybrid coordinate partitioning method in the dynamic analysis of multibody systems containing singular configurations. Two coordinate partitioning methods, i.e. LU decomposition and QR decomposition for constrained multibody systems, are combined for a new hybrid coordinate partitioning method. The proposed hybrid method reduces the simulation time while keeping accuracy of the solution.

  • This work presents an iterative mesh partitioning approach to improve the efficiency of parallel substructure finite element computations. The proposed approach employs an iterative strategy with a set of empirical rules derived from the results of numerical experiments on a number of different finite element meshes. The proposed approach also utilizes state-of-the-art partitioning techniques in its iterative partitioning kernel, a cost function to estimate the computational cost of each submesh, and a mechanism that adjusts element weights to redistribute elements among submeshes during iterative partitioning to partition a mesh into submeshes (or substructures) with balanced computational workloads. In addition, actual parallel finite element structural analyses on several test examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach proposed herein. The results show that the proposed approach can effectively improve the efficiency of parallel substructure finite element computations.
