Numerical Study of Impact for Particulate Matter Reduction Device According to Installation of Perforated Plate and Mixer on Marine Diesel Engine (선박용 디젤엔진의 미세먼지저감 장치에 다공판과 믹서의 장착이 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • This study presents the characteristics of a pressure drop and uniformity index for a particulate matter reduction device with a perforated plate and mixer for marine diesel engines. The perforated plate and mixer equipped on the particulate matter reduction device induce an increase of exhaust gas reduction performance by increasing the uniformity index. Whereas, the perforated plate induces pressure drop increases in the particulate matter reduction device. Therefore to calculate the effect of the uniformity index and pressure drop of the perforated plates and mixer, this study combines several cases using five types of perforated plates and one type of mixer. Consequently, these results were analyzed to determine the optimized type and position of the perforated plate and mixer.

  • Diesel PM can be controlled using Diesel Particulate Filter, which can effectively reduce the level of soot emissions to ambient background levels. In the Heavy Duty Diesel area, the Continuously Regeneration trap has been widely applied in the retrofit market. As the Special act for the improvement of air quality in the capital area, the retrofit program for DPF to used diesel vehicle has progressed favorably and there are currently over 1,000 of these DPF in use in retrofit applications in korea. These DPF comprise a specially formulated Diesel Oxidation Catalyst upstream of a DPF. The $NO_2$ generated by the DOC is used to combust the carbon collected in the DPF at low temperature. To certificate DPF device that is suitable to domestic circumstances, it is necessary to evaluate exactly the DPF devices according to the regulation of DPF certificate test procedure for retrofit(ministry of environment(MOE) announcement NO. 2005-16). To do so the understand of that regulation like the standard of PM reduction rate is needed. In this study the test procedure including test cycle and BPT test condition was examined and also the test result for specific DPF was analyzed. In every test like field test, PM reduction efficiency test and seoul-10 mode test, no defect could be showed.

  • The combustion purpose of diesel engine is to reduce the emission of green gas and to produce high output. Generally, the regulation matter of emission gas is largely diveded by 'THC', 'NOx', 'CO' and 'PM'. Among those matters, the most problem is to disgorge into 'PM', the character of diesel combustion. Diesel PM can be controlled using Diesel Particulate Filter, which can effectively reduce the level of soot emissions to ambient background levels. $NO_2$ generated by the DOC is used to combust the carbon collected in the DPF at low temperature.   • In this paper, it is proposed to solve the problem of the harmful exhaust gas reduction device DPF. The exhaust gas is effectively guided through the control of the exhaust gas flow path which is separated in both directions. Through cross control of two DPF units, it helps to improve the purification and regeneration combustion characteristics of harmful emissions. It is possible to prevent an increase in internal pressure caused by deposition of particulate matter in the DPF. It is also an object of the present invention to provide an automobile harmful exhaust gas reduction device capable of solving the problem of lowering the output and lowering the fuel consumption.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the emission reduction characteristics depending on the formation of the catalyst which influences the development of the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) suitable for small-sized diesel engines. We also attempted to suggest the feasibility of it as an after-treatment device. The reduction efficiency of DOC for CO and HC was proportional to the contents of precious metals, and the particulate matter (PM) has been reduced as much as 53∼59%. The reduction rate of soluble organic fraction (SOF) by DOC attachment revealed 100%. The composition of sulfate in PM increased from 3%, 7∼11% by installation of DOC. It is described that increase of sulfate contributed to the production of PM. This result also showed that the SOF and sulfate have trade-off relationship.

  • Non-thermal plasma technology has many applications in various areas. One of the applications is regenerating diesel particulate filter (DPF). DPF is a widely applied device to control the particulate emission of diesel engines. But it needs periodic removal of clogged soot for the smooth running of engine. Conventional high-temperature removal processes easily leads to the breakage of DPF. Herein, low-temperature plasma formed in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was used to form active oxidants such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide. Experimentally, the effects of discharge power and frequency on the performance of DBD reactor were studied. Two oxidants, $O_3$ and $NO_2$, were synthesized and used for incinerating soot in the used DPF. Performances of the two oxidants on the reduction of soot were compared, and it was found that $NO_2$ is more effective than $O_3$ for getting rid of soot

Reduction of Particulate Matters Levels in Railway Cabins in Korea

  • Objectives: High concentrations of airborne particulate matters (PM) can affect the health of passengers using public transportation. The objectives of this research were to develop a PM control system for a railway cabin and to evaluate the performance of the device under conditions of an actual journey. Methods: This study measured the concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ simultaneously in a reference cabin and a cabin with the PM control device. Results: The average $PM_{10}$ concentration in the reference cabin was 100 ${\mu}g/m^3$, and the $PM_{10}$ concentration in the cabin with the control device was 79 ${\mu}g/m^3$. While the overall control efficiency of the control device was 15.4%, reduction was more effective for peak $PM_{10}$ concentration. However, $PM_{2.5}$ levels did not differ greatly between the reference cabin and the cabin with the control device. The ratio of $PM_{2.5}$ to $PM_{10}$ was 0.37. $PM_{10}$ concentrations in cabins were not associated with ambient concentrations, indicating that the main sources of $PM_{10}$ were present in cabins. Additionally, average $CO_2$ concentration in the cabins was 1,359 ppm, less than the maximum of 2,000 ppm set out by the Korean Ministry of Environment's guideline. The $CO_2$ concentration in cabins was significantly associated with the number of passengers: the in-cabin concentration = $23.4{\times}N+460.2$, where N is the number of passengers. Conclusions: Application of the PM control device can improve $PM_{10}$ concentration, especially at peak levels but not $PM_{2.5}$ concentration.

Experimental Study on Reduction of Particulate Matter and Sulfur Dioxide Using Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (습식전기집진기를 활용한 입자상 물질 및 황산화물 저감 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This experimental study aims to investigate the use of a wet electrostatic precipitator as a post-treatment device to satisfy the strict emission regulations for sulfur oxides and particulate matter (PM). The inlet/outlet of a wet electrostatic precipitator was installed in a funnel using a marine four-stroke diesel engine (STX-MAN B&W) consuming marine heavy fuel oil (HFO) with a sulfur content of about 2.1%. Measurements were then obtained at the outlet of the wet electrostatic precipitator; an optical measuring instrument (OPA-102), and the weight concentration measurement method (Method 5 Isokinetic Train) were used for the PM measurements and the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR; DX-4000) approach was used for the sulfur oxide measurements. The experimenst were conducted by varying the engine load from 50%, to 75% and 100%; it was noted that the PM reduction efficiency was a high at about 94 to 98% under all load conditions. Additionally, during the process of lowering the exhaust gas temperature in the quenching zone of the wet electrostatic precipitator, the sulfur dioxide (SO2) values reduced because of the cleaning water, and the reduction rate was confirmed to be 55% to 81% depending on the engine load.

  • Recently, as the fine dust is increased and the emission regulations of diesel engines have been tightened, interest in diesel soot filtration devices has rapidly increased. There is specifically a demand for the technological development of higher diesel exhaust gas after-treatment device efficiency. As part of this, many studies were conducted to increase exhaust gas treatment efficiency by improving the flow uniformity of the exhaust gas in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and reducing the pressure drop between the inlet and the outlet of DPF. In this study, the effects of pressure drop by the flow rate and temperature of exhaust gas, DPF I/O ratio, Ash, and PM amount in diesel reduction device were simulated via a 12" diameter DPF and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) using ANSYS Fluent. As the flow rate and temperature decreased, the pressure drop decreased, whereas the PM amount affected the pressure drop more than the ash amount and the pressure drop was lower in anisotropic DPF than isotropic DPF. In the case of DPF flow uniformity, it was constant regardless of the various variables of DPF. In ESC and ETC conditions, the filtration efficiency for PM was similar regardless of anisotropic and isotropic DPF, but the filtration efficiency for PN (particle number) was higher in anisotropic DPF than isotropic DPF.

Characteristics of Simultaneous Removal of NOx and PM over a Hybrid System of LNT/DPF + SCR/DPF in a Single Cylinder Diesel Engine (단기통 디젤엔진에서 LNT/DPF + SCR/DPF 하이브리드 시스템의 NOx 및 PM 동시저감 특성)

  • The market demand for diesel engine tends to increase in general passenger cars as well as commercial vehicles because of its advantages. However, to meet the vehicle emissions regulation which will be more stringent in the future, it is necessary to plurally apply all after-treatment technologies such as diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), catalyzed diesel particulate filter (CDPF), lean NOx trap (LNT) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and so on. Accordingly, the exhaust after-treatment system for diesel vehicle requires the technology of minimizing the numbers of catalysts by integrating every individual catalysts. The purposes of this study is to develop hybrid exhaust after-treatment device system which simultaneously uses LNT/DPF and SCR/DPF catalyst concurrently reducing NOx and particulate matter (PM). As the results, the hybrid system with $NH_3$ generated at LNT/DPF working as a reducing agent of SCR/DPF catalyst, improving NOx conversion rate, was found to be more excellent in de-NOx performance than that in LNT/DPF alone system.
