다양한 형상의 충전물로 채워진 충전층 집진기의 집진성능 예측 (Prediction of collection performance for a granular bed filter filled with various shapes of packing material)

  • Granular bed filters are widely used to remove particulate matter in flue gas and are filled with various shapes of packing material. The packing material plays an important role in determining the overall collection performance, such as pressure drop and collection efficiency. The pressure drop of a granular bed filter has been calculated using the Ergun equation, while the collection efficiency has been predicted using the log-penetration equation based on the single sphere theory. However, a prediction equation of collection efficiency for a granular bed filter filled with non-spherical packing materials has not been suggested yet. Therefore, in this study, three different shapes of packing materials (sphere, cylinder, and irregular) were prepared to propose a prediction equation. The pressure drop and collection efficiency in a granular bed filter filled with each shape of packing material were measured experimentally and compared with theoretically predicted values. We found that experimentally measured pressure drops matched well with values theoretically predicted using the Ergun equation considering the shape factor. However, experimental collection efficiencies were higher than theoretical ones predicted by the log-penetration equation using the single sphere theory. We modified the log-penetration equation by employing a shape factor and found a good relationship between experimental and theoretical collection efficiencies.

  • In order to understand the flow and filtration characteristics in a wall-flow type DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter), 0-D, 1-D, and 3-D simulations are preformed. In this paper, three model are explained and validated with each other. Based on the comparisons with 1-D and 3-D results for the steady state solution, 3-D CFD analysis is preferable to 1-D for the prediction of wall velocity at the inlet and exit plane. Because PM loading process is transient state phenomena, the combination of full 3-D and time dependent simulation is crucial for the configuration of wall channels.   • Diesel particulate matter is known to be one of the major harmful emissions produced by diesel engines. Diesel particulates are subject to diesel emission regulations and have lately become the focus in the diesel emission control technology. Thus, the aftertreatment system is adopted at the diesel engine exhaust to reduce the particulate emission. Although this benefit is recognized, it is not clear how the aftertreatment system influences quantitatively the particle size distribution distribution. In this study, the particle size distributions of diesel exhaust were measured using the scanning mobility particle sizer with and without the aftertreatment system. There results showed that the diesel particulate filter and plasm system reduced the number of emitted particles by more than 90% and about 80% respectivley in the particle size range of 20nm∼600nm. On the other hand no significant effect of the diesel oxidation catalyst on the particle number concentration was detected.

Characteristics of Nano-Particles Exhausted from Diesel Passenger Vehicle with DPF

  • The nano-particles are known to influence the environmental protection and human health. The relationships between transient vehicle operation and nano-particle emissions are not well-known, especially for diesel passenger vehicles with DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter). In this study, two diesel passenger vehicles were measured on a chassis dynamometer test bench. The particulate matter (PM) emission of these vehicles was investigated by number and mass measurement. The mass of the total PM was evaluated using the standard gravimetric measurement method, and the total number concentrations were measured on a ECE15+EUDC driving cycle using Condensation Particle Counter (CPC). According to the investigation results, total number concentration was $1.14{\times}10^{11}$M and mass concentration was 0.71mg/km. About 99% of total number concentration was emitted during the $0{\sim}400s$ because of engine cold condition. In high temperature and high speed duration, the particulate matter was increased but particle concentration was emitted not yet except initial engine cold condition According to DPF performance deterioration, the particulate matter was emitted 2 times and particle concentration was emitted 32 times. Thus DPF performance deterioration affects particle concentration more than PM.

  • Since air pollution has become a globally critical issue and exhaust emissions from automobiles cause a major source of air pollution, many countries including advanced countries have stipulated stringent emission regulations. Particularly in diesel vehicles, NOx and particulate matters exhaust in significant amounts even though diesel vehicles provide merits in aspects of higher thermal efficiency and lower $CO_2$. To reduce Particulate matters and NOx, after-treatment technology such as filter trap, oxidation catalysts and EGR has been applied. This test was conducted on the effect of continuous regeneration diesel particulate filter and cooled-EGR, and 15ppm low sulfur diesel was used as a test fuel. Exhaust emissions, PM, NOx, CO, HC and Soots were measured and compared under D-13 and D-3 modes.

  • Thermal regeneration means burning-off and cleaning-up the particulate matters piled up in DPF(diesel particulate filter), and it requires both high temperature $(550\~600^{\circ}C)$ and appropriate concentration of oxygen at DPF entrance. However, it is not easy to satisfy such conditions because of the low temperature window of the HSDI(high speed direct injection) diesel engine(approximately $200\~350^{\circ}C$ at cycle). Therefore, this study is focused on the method to raise temperature using the trade-off relation between temperature, oxygen concentration, and the influence of many parameters of common rail injection system including post injection. After performing an optimal mapping of the common rail parameters for regeneration mode, the actual cleaning process during regeneration mode is investigated and evaluated the availability of the regeneration mode mapping through regenerating soot trapped in the DPF.

  • Bag-filter system has been widely used in industrial field to remove the particulate matters from the exhaust gas. The cylindrical type of bag-filter has been generally used. But it has many shortcomings. The reattachment of separated particles on the surface of bags could result in high pressure drop of bag-filter system and subsequent decrease of air flow rate since the cylindrical type bag-filter system should have the upward flow pattern. In addition, the supply of very high pressure pulse air jet to remove particulate matters on the surface of filter could result in a frequent rupture of bags. To overcome these shortcomings of the cylindrical type, the rectangular type was developed in the developed countries and imported to Korea. But, there was not many design data available to understand the mechanisms. Thus, the fundamental experiments were conducted in this study to get some ideas about the pulse jet cleaning of rectangular type bag filter system. The experimental factors are as follows; pulse distance, pulse duration, pulse interval, pulse pressure and pulse nozzle type. Experiments followed the factorial design method. With the shorter pulse distance, the distribution of pressure drops was relatively not uniform while the particulate removal efficiency was higher. With the longer duration of pulsing and the more number of pulse nozzle, the removal efficiency was higher and the pressure drop distribution was more uniform.

  • Work on the reduction of particulate matter(PM) from a diesel vehicl has led to a new trp system and a control method to control the combustion rate of the PM filtrated in the trap, which was named as 'Active Exhaust Feeding Regeneration(AEFR) System' by its operation mechanism. Ceramic cordierite filter is a major component of the trap and susceptible to thermal shock. Therefore the system should be designed to reduce the peak temperature and temperature gradients in the trap ; these have been considered to be the main factors causing thermal shock of the filter during the regeneration. It uses the engine's exhaust gas partially for the regeneration of the ceramic filter. It controlled bypass flow rate of the engine's exhaust gas precisely to control the temperature of the gas entrained into the filter. Gas temperatures were measured inside filter, and the oxygen concentration at the outlet of the filter was also monitored during the regeneration to analyze the combustion process of the PM. The temperature distributions and temperature gradients in the filter during the regeneration varied widely according to the regeneration control schemes. Finally, this system shows relatively low peak temperature and temperature gradients in the filter during its regeneration. It is considered that this system uses a mew method to control the combustion rate of the PM, which is different from the methods used in the previous studies.

  • 원자력연구시설의 핫셀 내 바닥이나 장치표면에 부착된 방사성 오염입자의 제거를 위해서 PFC 제염기술을 적용한다. 고가인 PFC 제염용액의 재사용을 위해서는 여과장치의 개발이 필요하고 제염종료 후 이차폐기물의 양을 최소화할 필요가 있다. 여과막을 이용한 입자의 제거효율 측면에서 보면 Ceramic, PVDF, PP 막 모두가 $95\%$ 이상의 높은 여과 성능을 보였다. 기공 크기가 같은 동일 여과막에서는 입자가 크거나 공급되는 압력이 높을수록 좀더 성공적인 입자의 제거효율을 나타내었다. 투과 성능은 PVDF 막이 가장 높은 수준을 나타내었고 Ceramic과 PP 막에서는 다소 낮은 성능을 보였다. PVDF 막은 낮은 압력과 짧은 여과시간으로 최대(한계) 투과량에 도달함을 확인하였다. Ceramic 막은 모의입자의 제거효율은 높지만 다소 낮은 투과 성능을 나타냈다. 또한, 막 자체의 비싼 가격과 쉽게 부서지는 성질의 단점을 지니고 있지만 무기화합물의 재질로 되어있기 때문에 알파방사능 환경에서 $H_2$ 가스를 발생하는 고분자 막인 PVDF, PP 막과 비교하여 훨씬 안정적이므로 실제 핫셀에 적용 가능함을 알 수 있었다.

  • The key point that guarantees the durability of the ceramic monolith filter is to lower peak temperature and temperature gradient inside filter during regeneration. The control of the exhaust gas flow rate into the filter, by the bypass technique of the exhaust gas, enables the gas temperature in filter to be constant for regeneration. A couple of methods, which are the ON/OFF and PID control of the bypass valve, were used for feedback control of the gas temperature. These techniques showed that the ceramic filter was regenerated perfectly under the peak temperature and peak temperature gradient limitations for durability.
