Spatial and temporal variations of mercury, including dry and wet deposition fluxes, were assessed over Northeast Asia, targeting the Yellow Sea, using meteorology and chemistry models. Four modeling periods, each representative of one of the four seasons, were selected. Modeling results captured general patterns and behaviors, and fell within similar ranges with respect to observations. However, temporal variations of mercury were not closely matched, possibly owing to the effects of localized emissions. Modeling results indicated that dry deposition is correlated with wind speed, while wet deposition is correlated with precipitation amount. Overall, the wet deposition flux of $66ng/m^2-day$ was about twice as large as the dry deposition flux of $32ng/m^2-day$, when averaged over the four modeling periods. Dry deposition occurred predominantly in the form of reactive gaseous mercury (RGM). In contrast, RGM accounted for only about two-thirds of wet deposition, while particulate mercury accounted for the remainder.
The combustion and exhaust emissions characteristics of a liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether compression ignition engine with a variable valve timing device were investigated under various liquefied petroleum gas injection timing conditions. Liquefied petroleum gas was used as the main fuel and was injected directly into the combustion chamber. Di-methyl ether was used as an ignition promoter and was injected into the intake port. Different liquefied petroleum gas injection timings were tested to verify the effects of the mixture homogeneity on the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of the liquefied petroleum gas-di-methyl ether compression ignition engine. The average charge temperature was calculated to analyze the emission formation. The ringing intensity was used for analysis of knock characteristics. The combustion and exhaust emission characteristics differed significantly depending on the liquefied petroleum gas injection and intake valve open timings. The CO emission increased as the intake valve open and liquefied petroleum gas injection timings were retarded. However, the particulate matter emission decreased and the nitrogen oxide emission increased as the intake valve open timing was retarded in the diffusion combustion regime. Finally, the combustion efficiency decreased as the intake valve open and liquefied petroleum gas injection timings were retarded.
Seven potentially harmful bifunctional carbonyls were measured in particulate and gaseous phases at a roadside site and a suburban site in an area about 30 km north-northwest from Tokyo metropolitan area in the Kanto region in Japan. For the first time, these compounds were measured in both phases with a time resolution of 2 h. We found that wind direction is an important parameter that affects the collection of these compounds near the source, and it can cover the effects of other important variables. Our results confirmed that motor vehicles and especially diesel fuelled vehicles are important sources of these compounds. Photochemical generation is also an important source of these compounds in the gaseous phase. Transportation from the urban area is also important, particularly in the aerosol phase.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of equivalence ratio on the combustion and emission characteristics of a compression ignition engine fueled with biodiesel. In this research, a single-cylinder direct injection engine with 373.3 cc of displacement volume was tested on DC dynamometer. In order to investigate the effect of biodiesel equivalence ratio on combustion characteristics, the experiments were conducted at various equivalence ratios and injection pressures of 40~120 MPa. For investigating engine performance, lambda meter was connected and equivalence ratios was varied from 0.6 to 1.0. In addition, the exhaust emissions such as oxides of nitrogen($NO_X$), hydrocarbon(HC) and carbon monoxide(CO) were measured by exhaust gas analyzer under the various air/fuel ratios. The experimental results show that maximum IMEP was measured at the 0.8 of equivalence ratio. Furthermore, $NO_X$ emission was rapidly decreased as the increase of equivalence ratio. However soot emission was significantly increased according to the increase of equivalence ratio.
Schools are one of the critical social infrastructures in a society, the first place for social activity and the most important indoor environment for children besides the home. Poor IAQ in classrooms can increase the chance of long-term and short-term health problems for students and staffs; affects productivity of teachers; and degrade the student learning environment and comfort levels. The primary objective of this paper is to review and summarize available scientific evidence on indoor air quality of schools and related health effects in children. It was found that the indoor air pollutant levels in school buildings varied over a wide range in different parts of the world depending on site characteristics, climatic conditions, outdoor pollution levels, occupant activities, ventilation type and building practices. Among the indoor air pollutants, particulate matter concentrations were found to be very high in many schools. Outdoor pollutant sources also play a major role in affecting the IAQ of the school building. Hence, scientific knowledge on sources of indoor pollutants, quantification of emissions, temporal and spatial dispersion of pollutants, toxicological properties, chemical and morphological characteristics of the pollutants and associated health risk among children in the school buildings are essential to evaluate the adequacy and cost effectiveness of control strategies for mitigating the IAQ issues.

This experimental study was conducted to investigate macroscopic characteristics of the flash boiling spray with tow component mixing fuel. Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) is a newer combustion method for internal combustion engines to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate matter simultaneously. But it is difficult to put this combustion method to practical use in an engine because of such problems as instability of combustion in low load operating conditions and knocking in high load operating conditions. In HCCI, combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions depend on conditions of air/fuel mixture and chemical reactions of fuel molecules. The fuel design approach is achieved by mixing two components which differ in properties such as density, viscosity, volatility, ignitability and so on. We plan to apply the fuel design approach to HCCI combustion generated in a real engine, and examine the possibility of mixture formation control using the flash boiling spray. Spray characteristics of two component fuel with a flash boiling phenomenon was investigated using Shlieren and Mie scattering photography. Test fuel was injected into a constant volume vessel at ambient conditions imitated injection timing BTDC of a real engine. As a result, it was found that a flash boiling phenomenon greatly changed spray structure, especially in the conditions of lower temperature and density. Therefore, availability of mixture formation control using flash boiling spray was suggested.
The increasing numbers of automobiles keep causing air-pollution problems worse than ever. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modern technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. This research emphasized on the development of Continuously Regenerating DPF technology which was the best particulate matters removing technology of current existing technology because of its superior comparability and high applicability. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a Continuously Regenerating DPF ona displacement 7,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on engine performance and characteristics on exhaust emissions with the application of a Continuously Regenerating DPF in a heavy-duty diesel vehicle.
Despite its benefit in engine thermal efficiency, gasoline-direct-injection (GDI) engines generate substantial particulate matter (PM) emissions compared to conventional port-fuel-injection (PFI) engines. One of the reasons for this is that the spray collapse caused by the spray-to-spray interaction forms the locally rich fuel-air mixture and increases the fuel wall film. Previous studies have investigated the spray collapse phenomenon through the macroscopic observation of spray behavior using laser optical techniques, but it is somewhat difficult to understand the interaction between sprays that is initiated in the near-nozzle region within 10 mm from the nozzle exit. In this study, the spray structure, droplet size and velocity data were obtained using an X-ray imaging technique from the near-nozzle to the downstream of the spray to investigate the spray-to-spray interaction and discuss the effects of spray collapse on local droplet size and velocity distribution. It was found that as the ambient density increases, the spray collapse was promoted due to the intensified spray-to-spray interaction, thereby increasing the local droplet size and velocity from the near-nozzle region as a result of droplet collision/coalescence.
The present operating system for the atmospheric monitoring network in the city of Seoul, Korea, has been established since the late 90s by the Korean Ministry of Environment (KMOE). In this research, it was evaluated by the multi-statistical approaches through combinations of time series analysis, correlation matrix, and multiple cluster analysis. Finally, road traffic including resuspended materials can be one of the main sources of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Based on its importance, it will be significant challenges in quantitative evaluation of its contribution to airborne concentrations. The future directions for their amendments such as a new management plan for the source of road dust (including car emissions) were devised and proposed based on the statistical judgements derived in this research.
Suddenly increasing numbers of automobiles result in making worse air pollution problems. In particular, the emissions from automobiles affect badly on atmosphere. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modem technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. The ceramic filter is very efficient in reducing particular materials up to 80-90% and is evaluated as a very efficient after-treatment technology. However, it comes with decreased engine performance due to increased back-pressure occurred by thermal crack. In order to solve these problems, several methods are proposed such as fuel additive, electric heater and burner types. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a ceramic filter on a displacement 11,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on the basic mechanism and characteristics on harmful materials generated by ceramic filter.
