Simultaneous Application of Platinum-Supported Alumina Catalyst and Ozone Oxidant for Low-temperature Oxidation of Soot (백금담지 알루미나 촉매와 오존 산화제 동시 적용에 의한 탄소 입자상 물질의 저온 산화반응)

  • The lowering of temperature for combustion of diesel particulate matters (or diesel soot) is one of the important tasks in automotive industry that is searching for a way to meet up "high-fuel efficiency, low-emission" standard. In this study, it was discussed how the use of ozone over platinum-based catalyst promotes a low-temperature soot oxidation occurred at $150^{\circ}C$. The use of platinum catalyst did not increase oxidation rate largely but was very effective in improving the selectivity of carbon dioxide. The pre-oxidation of NO into $NO_2$ using ozone was rather crucial in improving the oxidation rate of soot at $150^{\circ}C$.

Comparative Analysis of the CALPUFF and AERMOD Atmospheric Dispersion Models for Ready-Mixed Concrete Manufacturing Facilities Generating Particulate Matter (미세먼지 발생 레미콘시설에서의 대기확산모델 CALPUFF와 AERMOD 비교 분석)

  • Objectives: Using atmospheric dispersion representative models (AERMOD and CALPUFF), the emissions characteristics of each model were compared and analyzed in ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facilities that generate a large amount of particulate matter (PM-10, PM-2.5). Methods: The target facilities were the ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facilities (Siheung RMC, Goyang RMC, Ganggin RMC) and modeling for each facility was performed by dividing it into construction and operation times. The predicted points for each target facility were selected as 8-12ea (Siheung RMC 10, Goyang RMC 8, and Gangjin RMC 12ea) based on an area within a two-kilometer radius of each project district. The terrain input data was SRTM-3 (January-December 2019). The meteorological input data was divided into surface weather and upper layer weather data, and weather data near the same facility as the target facility was used. The predicted results were presented as a 24-hour average concentration and an annual average concentration. Results: First, overall, CALPUFF showed a tendency to predict higher concentrations than AERMOD. Second, there was almost no difference in the concentration between the two models in non-complex terrain such as in mountainous areas, but in complex terrain, CALPUFF predicted higher concentrations than AERMOD. This is believed to be because CALPUFF better reflected topographic characteristics. Third, both CALPUFF and AERMOD predicted lower concentrations during operation (85.2-99.7%) than during construction, and annual average concentrations (76.4-99.9%) lower than those at 24 hours. Fourth, in the ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facility, PM-10 concentration (about 40 ㎍/m3) was predicted to be higher than PM-2.5 (about 24 ㎍/m3). Conclusions: In complex terrain such as mountainous areas, CALPUFF predicted higher concentrations than AERMOD, which is thought to be because CALPUFF better reflected topographic characteristics. In the future, it is recommended that CALPUFF be used in complex terrain and AERMOD be used in other areas to save modeling time. In a ready-mixed concrete facility, PM-10, which has a relatively large particle size, is generated more than PM-2.5 due to the raw materials used and manufacturing characteristics.

  • In late 1997, the portion of registered light-duty diesel vehicle was 25.3% and its emission rate was 17.1% in Korea. Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) and NOx are hazardous air pollutants to human health and environment in urban area. The reduction technologies of exhaust emissions from diesel engines are improvement of engine combustion, fuel quality and development of diesel exhaust after treatment , In this study , a light-duty diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) that is one of the diesel exhaust after treatment was made for performance evaluation and the emission characteristics were tested on CVS-75 mode. And the analysis of the particle size distribution with scanning mobility particle 100, 67.6% and 66.7, 10.0% for Pt and Pt-V catalyst .And for Pt catalyst, the PM increased 7.8% because of increasing sulfate but Pt-V catalyst reduced the PM to 23.0% . Test results of particle size distribution showed that peak values of number and mass densities are respectively 100∼200nm their distribution trend independent of vehicle speed.

Emission Characteristics of Air Pollutants and Black Carbon from Wood-pellet Stove and Boiler (목재 펠릿 난로와 보일러 사용에 의한 대기오염물질과 블랙카본의 배출 특성)

  • This study was carried out simulating domestic utilization conditions of a wood pellet stove and a wood pellet boiler in order to determine emission factors (EFs) of macro-pollutants, i.e., carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, ammonia, particulate matters (total suspended particulate, $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, black carbon) and trace pollutants (i.e., ten different volatile organic compounds). The composite pollutants EFs for the pellet stove were: for TSP 4.58 g/kg, for $PM_{10}$ 3.35 g/kg, for $PM_{2.5}$ 2.48 g/kg, CO 119.23 g/kg, NO 14.40 g/kg, $SO_2$ 0.17 g/kg, TVOC 37.73 g/kg, $NH_3$ 0.02 g/kg and emissions were similar to the pellet boiler appliance: for TSP 4.73 g/kg, for $PM_{10}$ 3.41 g/kg, for $PM_{2.5}$ 2.63 g/kg, CO 161.51 g/kg, NO 13.67 g/kg, $SO_2$ 0.19 g/kg, TVOC 45.22 g/kg, $NH_3$ 0.02 g/kg.

  • Manually fed firewood burning appliances, i.e., stove and boiler, were tested in order to determine emission factors (EFs) of macro-pollutants, i.e., carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, ammonia, particulate matters (total suspended particulate, $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, black carbon) and trace pollutants (i.e., ten different volatile organic compounds). Planting Design Strategies and Green Space Planning to Mitigate Respirable Particulate Matters - Case Studies in Beijing, China - (미세먼지 저감을 위한 식재기법 및 도시 녹지계획 방향 - 중국 베이징시 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of the research is to analyze the recent cases of green space planning and planting design in Beijing, one of the cities having the worst particulate matters (PM) pollution. This study comprehensively reviewed Chinese academic literature addressing green space planning to reduce PM pollution. In addition, we conducted field observations and interviews with public officials from Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape Design in charge of planning and management of green spaces in Beijing. After the extensive review of literature we derived tree planting principles to mitigate the impact of PM from urban road system, residential area, and industrial district. Using the principles we evaluated the three recent cases of planting design to mitigate PM: Beijing Fuxing Road, Fu Run Residential Area and Beijing Beiqi Multipurpose Vehicle Factory. We conclude that green space planning and trees planting are not effective in mitigating negative impact of PM pollution because of inadequate selection of trees and inconsiderate planting composition. We proposed to replace the tree species with the ones capable of reducing the spread of PM, and reorganize planting compositions that consider the directions and characteristics of urban wind flow. This study suggests desirable types of tree species and planting compositions for road, residential and industrial districts, and we expect that it provides helpful guidelines for making planting design and species selection to mitigate the impact of PM in urban landscape.

Study on the economic losses in the industrial sector in case of a Mt. Baekdu eruption scenario (백두산 화산재해로 인한 산업부문 피해액 산정에 관한 연구)

  • Given the distance from Mt. Baekdu, volcanic ash will have the direct impact on South Korea in case Mt. Baekdu erupts. Ash fall deposits or particulate matters(PM10) in the air will cause damages in various sectors. In particular, the PM10 impact on the manufacturing sector when the ash disperses in Korea is needed to be assessed since South Korea's manufacturing sector accounts for more than 30% of GDP. Meanwhile the economic impacts of PM10, including Asian dust, have been researched in Korea as the events become frequent, and losses in the manufacturing have been also reported. This study is to identify vulnerable sectors to volcanic ash in the korean industry, and to assess economic losses in case of a Mt. Baekdu eruption scenario, based on the historical loss experience with particulate matters. Study results show that airline, precision such as electronics and semiconductors, distribution, shipbuilding, car, leisure, glass, dairy farming are vulnerable to volcanic ash, or PM10. The economic losses in both car and shipbuilding industry is estimated to 46.49 billion Korean won due to shutdown for 6 hours in case of a Mt. Baekdu eruption scenario.

Characterization of Odorant Compounds from Mechanical Aerated Pile Composting and Static Aerated Pile Composting

  • We studied airborne contaminants (airborne particulates and odorous compounds) emitted from compost facilities in South Korea. There are primarily two different types of composting systems operating in Korean farms, namely mechanical aerated pile composting (MAPC) and aerated static pile composting (SAPC). In this study, we analyzed various particulate matters (PM10, PM7, PM2.5, PM1, and total suspended particles), volatile organic compounds and ammonia, and correlated these airborne contaminants with microclimatic parameters, i.e., temperature and relative humidity. Most of the analyzed airborne particulates (PM7, PM2.5, and PM1) were detected in high concentration at SAPC facilities compered to MAPC; however these differences were statistically non-significant. Similarly, most of the odorants did not vary significantly between MAPC and SAPC facilities, except for dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and skatole. DMS concentrations were significantly higher in MAPC facilities, whereas skatole concentrations were significantly higher in SAPC facilities. The microclimate variables also did not vary significantly between MAPC and SAPC facilities, and did not correlate significantly with most of the airborne particles and odorous compounds, suggesting that microclimate variables did not influence their emission from compost facilities. These findings provide insight into the airborne contaminants that are emitted from compost facilities and the two different types of composting agitation systems.

An Investigation of Emission of Particulate Matters and Ammonia in Comparison with Animal Activity in Swine Barns (양돈사 내 동물 활동도에 따른 암모니아 및 미세먼지 배출농도 특성 분석)

  • The movement of animals is one of the primary factors that influence the variation of livestock emissions. This study evaluated the relationship between animal activity and three major emissions, PM10, PM2.5, and ammonia gas, in weaning, growing, and fattening pig houses through continuous monitoring of the animal activity. The movement score of animals was quantified by the developed image analysis algorithm using 10-second video clips taken in the pig houses. The calculated movement scores were validated by comparison with six activity levels graded by an expert group. A comparison between PMs measurement and the movement scores demonstrated that an increase of the PMs concentrations was obviously followed by increased movement scores, for example, when feeding started. The PM10 concentrations were more affected by the animal activity compared to the PM2.5 concentrations, which were related to the inflow of external PM2.5 due to ventilation. The PM10 concentrations in the fattening house were 1.3 times higher than those in the weaning house because of the size of pigs while weaning pigs were more active and moved frequently compared to fattening pigs showing 2.45 times higher movement scores. The results also indicated that indoor ammonia concentration was not significantly influenced by animal activity. This study is significant in the sense that it could provide realistic emission factors of pig farms considering animal's daily activity levels if further monitoring is carried out continuously.

The Effects of Diesel Exhaust Particulates and Particulate Matters on the Airway Remodeling in the Asthma-induced Mice (디젤분진 및 미세분진이 천식마우스에서 기도 재구성에 미치는 효과)

  • This research investigated whether exposure of diesel exhaust particulate (DEP) and particulate matter (PM) effects on airway remodeling in asthma induced Balb/c and IL-10 knock out (KO) mouse. Mice were sensitized with intraperitoneal injection with ovalbumin, followed by challenges with intranasal ovalbumin. After that mice placed in inhalation chamber and exposed to DEP and $PM(10\;mg/m^3)$. The evidence of airway remodeling was assessed by masson's trichrome staining and PAS staining. The stainability of masson's trichrome and PAS reaction were increased in asthma-induced Baltic mice groups compared with control mice groups. More intensive stainability for masson's trichrome and PAS were appeared in the asthma-induced DEP and PM-exposed groups than asthama-induced groups. But, not significantly increased subepithelial fibrosis and the nember of goblet cell hyperplasia in asthma-induced IL-10 KO mice groups and asthma-induced+DEP and PM-exposed IL-10 KO mice than IL-10 KO mice groups. These results indirectly suggesting that exposure to DEP and PM in asthmatic patients might be aggravate clinical symptoms and IL-10 which seems to play a central role in allergic asthma. In conclusion, DEP and PM exposure might have additive effects on the ovalbumin- induced asthma in a murine model.
