This study examined the particulate removal performance of three different types of air filters inside a heat exchanger. Of interest was the ability of each filter type in reducing the transmission of outdoor particulate matter of PM10 from entering an apartment while the heat exchanger was in operation. The study tested one commonly used medium filter (E11 grade) and two HEPA filters (H13 grade) of different thicknesses. Two different concentrations of particulate matter were used in the experiment to address different ambient air quality conditions in Korea, 32.75 ㎍/㎥ and 67.26 ㎍/㎥. Study results indicated that under the particulate matter concentration of 32.75 ㎍/㎥, all three filters were capable of removing more than 95% of the fine dust. However at a particulate matter concentration of 67.26 ㎍/㎥, the medium E11 grade filter was only able to remove about 90% of the particulates whereas the HEPA H13 grade filters were able to remove 95% or more of the particulates. The thicker HEPA filter (40T) was also more effective in removing particulates than the thinner HEPA filter (20T) by about 1.6 to 3 percentage points. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that HEPA filters of 20T thickness or greater be used during the high air pollution seasons of winter and spring in Korea while medium filters can be used during the other seasons to reduce outdoor air pollution transmission indoors.

Air quality related to particulate matters and ammonia is being come to the fore as the national concern in Korea. CAPSS (Clean Air Policy Support System) provides emission coefficients of these kinds of particulate and gaseous matters in the fields of livestock; however reliability issues are consistently mentioned. Evaluation of emission rates of PM2.5 and NH3 of the country is very important, but only few studies are available as the background related to observation of the concentration of the particulate matter and ammonia, especially within livestock house in Korea. In this paper, long-term measurement of PM10, PM2.5, and ammonia within the mechanically ventilated broiler house were carried out to introduce backgrounds of generation and emission of the particulate matters and ammonia. Measurement results were analyzed according to seasonal changes, age of broilers(weeks) and measurement locations. Concentration of inhalable and respirable dust were also evaluated in terms of occupational respiratory health according to increase in broiler's activity. From the results of this study, identification of the generation mechanisms of the particulate and gaseous matters, and evaluation of the emission rate of these in the broiler house will be carried out.

As the COVID-19 pandemic situation worsens, the time spent indoors increases, and the exposure to indoor environmental pollution such as indoor air pollution and noise also increases, causing problems such as deterioration of human health, stress, and discord between neighbors. This paper designs and implements a system that measures and monitors indoor air quality and noise, which are representative evaluation criteria of the indoor environment. The system proposed in this paper consists of a particulate matter measurement subsystem that measures and corrects the concentration of particulate matters to monitor indoor air quality, and a noise measurement subsystem that detects changes in sound and converts it to a sound pressure level. The concentration of indoor particulate matters is measured using a laser-based light scattering method, and an error caused by temperature and humidity is compensated in this paper. For indoor noise measurement, the voltage measured through a microphone is basically measured, Fourier transform is performed to classify it by frequency, and then A-weighting is performed to correct loudness equality. Then, the RMS value is obtained, high-frequency noise is removed by performing time-weighting, and then SPL is obtained. Finally, the equivalent noise level for 1 minute and 5 minutes are calculated to show the indoor noise level. In order to classify noise into direct impact sound and air transmission noise, a piezo vibration sensors is mounted to determine the presence or absence of direct impact transmitted through the wall. For performance evaluation, the error of particulate matter measurement is analyzed through TSI's AM510 instrument. and compare the noise error with CEM's noise measurement system.
Fine dust is a substance that greatly affects human health, and various studies have been conducted in this regard. Due to the human influence of particulate matter, various studies are being conducted to predict particulate matter grade using past data measured in the monitoring network of Seoul city. In this paper, predictive model have focused on particulate matter concentration in May, 2019, Seoul. The air pollutant variables were used to training such as SO2, CO, NO2, O3. The predictive model based on Adaboost, and training model was dividing PM10 and PM2.5. As a result of the prediction performance comparison through confusion matrix, the Adaboost model was more conformable for predicting the particulate matter concentration grade. Although air pollutant variables have a higher correlation with PM2.5, training model need to train a lot of data and to use additional variables such as traffic volume to predict more effective PM10 and PM2.5 distribution grade.

Particulate matter is an air pollutant composed of various components, and has adverse effects on the human body. Particulate matter is known to induce cell death by generating an imbalance in the antioxidant system; however, the underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. In the present study, we demonstrated the cytotoxic effects of the size and composition of particulate matter on small intestine cells. We found that particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) with extraction ion (EI) components (PM2.5 EI), is more cytotoxic than PM containing only polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Additionally, PM-induced cell death is characteristic of ferroptosis, and includes iron accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Furthermore, ferroptosis inhibitor as liproxstatin-1 and iron-chelator as deferiprone attenuated cell mortality, lipid peroxidation, iron accumulation, and ROS production after PM2.5 EI treatment in human small intestinal cells. These results suggest that PM2.5 EI may increase ferroptotic-cell death by iron accumulation and ROS generation, and offer a potential therapeutic clue for inflammatory bowel diseases in human small intestinal cells.

Experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of mosses on the removal of particulate matter (PM 10) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in an indoor space and on the composition of air. For particulate matter removal experiments, 0.2 g mosquitto coil was burned in a glass chamber, where three kinds of mosses (Plagiomnium cuspidatum, Myuroclada maximowiczii, Etodon luridus) were placed. For VOCs removal experiments, 1 mL paint thinner was volatilized in a glass chamber, where Plagiomnium cuspidatum and Myuroclada maximowiczii were used. As a result, it was found that particulate matter was effectively removed by the three mosses, and the removal efficiency of particulate matter increased as the amount of mosses increased. The amount of VOCs was similar to the level in the control when a low amount of mosses (2 and 4 plates) was used. However, the removal efficiency of VOCs was significant when 6 plates of mosses were used. On the other hand, formaldehyde concentration was 40 times more than the control and carbon monoxide 30 times, when 0.2 g of mosquito repellent was completely burned in a glass chamber. Also formaldehyde removal effect was significant when 6 plates of mosses were placed. However, there was no change in the concentration of indoor oxygen, temperature and humidity by moss plants. In conclusion, the moss plants were effective in removing particulate matter and VOCs, and they are expected to be used for indoor decoration and landscape in order to improve indoor air quality in the future.

In southwestern East Sea, we investigated the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) in September 2011 (summer), January (winter) and May 2012 (spring). Although cold waters known as the origin upwelling in the surface layer of September were not observed, this periods showed high primary productivity because of high concentrations of chlorophyll, low percentage of non-autotrophic particulate fraction among POC calculated by POC/Chl-a ratio (27%) and low POC/PON ratio (6.2), which means active amino acid and protein synthesis, However, May, 2012 showed low primary productivity because of high percentage of non-autotrophic particulate fractions among POC (66%) and high POC/PON ratio (8.1), Although spring bloom and high primary productivity has been reported in the East Sea, high percentage of non-autotrophic particulate fractions in POC, observed in the East sea during the post 2012 spring, is suggested to be due to the increase of phaeo-pigment during post spring bloom. Thus, composition of particulate organic matter may have sensitively changed by marine environmental factors in spite of same season.

In order to understand the impacts of the construction of artificial sea dikes on carbon cycle in Samangeum area being a closed environment after April, 2006, we had measured suspended particulate matters, particulate and dissolved organic carbon in the surface water of inner Saemangeum dike from 2003 to 2006. The significant inputs of suspended particulate matter and organic carbon were mainly occurred during the wet season which suggests that most organic matter loading is concentrated within a short period of time inside the dike. The concentrations of particulate matter and organic carbon have gradually increasing every year inside of dike from the Mangyeong river estuary to Saemangeum dike, which has been closed since 2003 after the construction of the 4th dike. The particulate organic carbon increased due to the phytoplankton blooms by eutrophication. If the large portion of particulate organic matter produced in the surface water sink to the bottom sediment, this will cause the anoxic condition in this closed environment.
The present study aims to investigate the sequential mediation model in the relationships between optimistic bias, subjective perception, risk perception, and the future time perspective in terms of a particulate matter and depression, using the sequential mediation model. An online self-reported survey was conducted on 545 participants who agreed to participate in the current study. We considered depression as a dependent variable, optimistic bias as an independent variable, and subjective perception of particulate matter, the risk perception of particulate matter, future-time-perspective as mediators. The sequential mediation analysis was conducted using the SPSS Macro. The results show that optimistic bias was not directly related to depression, but was related to indirect paths through the subjective perception of particulate matter, the risk perception of particulate matter, and future time perspective. More specifically, the lack of optimistic bias was related to a tendency to subjectively perceive the quality of air pollution more seriously and a limited future time perspective, which subsequently related to depression. Future studies should pay more attention to the effects of particulate matter on the quality of life and mental health.
To investigate the an air pollution by particulate matter and its dispersion, a cement plant produceing portland cement 600,000 ton/year and its vicinity were surveyed from Obtober, 1980 to April, 1983. The survey was mainly focused on main stack emmission rate of the cement plant and particle size distribution in the dust, dustfall and total suspended particulate concentration in the area by month and distance from the stack. The results of the study were as follows; 1. The main stack emission rate was surveyed before and after the spray tower was additionally installed to the original E.P bag filter. Before the spray tower installed, the main stack emission rate was higher ($0.64g/Nm^3$) than the emission standard of Korean Environmental Preservation Law's ($0.59g/Nm^3$, amended to $0.4g/Nm^3$ on April 1983), but after the spray tower was installed, its main stack emission rate was markedly decreased to the standard ($0.43g/Nm^3$). 2. $2{\sim}3{\mu}m$ of the particle size was the largest portion (20.8%) of the dust particulate from the main stack and 50% of the frequency distribution was $1.5{\mu}m$ of the size. Most particle size was below $10{\mu}m$. 3. The spray tower reduced the dustfall to $37.81{\sim}9.76\;ton/km^2/month$ while dustfall appeared at $45.29-15.45ton/km^2/month$, in the vicinity of plant before spray tower installed 4. Mean concentrations of total suspended particulate for 24 hours of the various stations were determined in $20.6-200.0{\mu}g/m^3$, 3 stations of tham were higher than the value of Harry and William's arthmetic average standard $130{\mu}g/m^3$. 5. Linear regression between dustfall [X] and total suspended particulate[Y] concentration was an equation, Y=4.024X+11.479.[r=0.91] 6. During the whole seasons in the opposite area 100m apart from the omission source the prevailing wind direction was with estimated more than $30ton/km^2/month$, and the concentration of total suspended particulate for 24 hours averaging time was more than $140{\mu}g/m^3$ in the same area and direction. 7. Assuming the wind direction were constant through the day dustfalls for a day were estimated at $13.40ton/km^2/day,\;10.79ton/km^2/day$ and $4.55ton/km^2/day$ at various distances of 100m, 500m and 1,500m from the emission source respectively. 8. In the simutalion of dustfall and suspended dust by area, Gaussian dispersion model modified by size distribution of particulate matter was not applicated since the emission of dust were from multi sources other them stack. From the above results, it could be applied that the dispersion of dust from the cement plant is estimated and regulated for the purpose of environmental protection.
