The interest in acquiring high efficiency solar cells has been steadily increasing due to various advantages such as low-cost installation, pollution free and everlasting energy generation. In order to raise the cell efficiency, there has been a lot of effort to develop effective anti-reflection coatings. In this work, the main objective was to investigate the effects of particle size and annealing temperature of silica anti-reflection coatings to maximize the cell efficiency as well as reliability. It was shown that the light transmittance could be increased by a few percent over a certain range of wavelength using the silica coating. Also, the tribological properties of the coating could be improved through the annealing process, which led to better reliability of the coating.
Dropouts in magnetic media are a primary quality deficiency which is detrimental to magnetic signal quality and thus the major impediment to error-free recording, especially in high density digital recorders. The specific form of defects and causes found to be responsible for signal dropouts occurring in magnetic tape were studied. Dropout occurred when the RF signal falls to low level due to the various types of surface defects. However, the fall in the level of the RF signal in gravure roll coated tapes was most often caused by foreign particles adhering to the magnetic tape. It was also shown from the present study that scattered particles trapped under the tape surface or put on the top can lift it as it crosses the head, creating a spherical tent shaped defect and causing a temporary signal drop. Dropout producing substances were identified through optical and microchemical analyses. The results were correlated with measured electrical signal losses combined with analytical microscopy to clarify source identification of defects.

A novel electrostatic spraying method to solidify molten zinc coating layer was studied by SEM and measurement of sample's temperature. The sprayed droplets also served as nucleation sites in the solidification reaction of molten zinc but might leave the pitting mark by impinging on its surface especially at high spray pressure. Our experimental results showed that electric field could change the sprayed particle trajectories and assist the fine droplets to attach on the surface. Thus, by reducing the spray pressure and by applying the electric voltage higher than -20 KV to charge the droplets electrostatically, we could produce the spangle free galvanized coating layer without pitting.
In this contribution, the control of multivariable reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant using proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers is presented. First, feed-forward compensators are designed using simplified decoupling method and then the PID controllers are tuned for flux (flow-rate) and conductivity (salinity). The tuning of PID controllers is accomplished by minimization of the integral of squared error (ISE). The ISEs are minimized using a recently proposed algorithm named as teacher-learner-based-optimization (TLBO). TLBO algorithm is used due to being simple and being free from algorithm-specific parameters. A comparative analysis is carried out to prove the supremacy of TLBO algorithm over other state-of-art algorithms like particle swarm optimization (PSO), artificial bee colony (ABC) and differential evolution (DE). The simulation results and comparisons show that the purposed method performs better in terms of performance and can successfully be applied for tuning of PID controllers for RO desalination plants.
Imbalance of protein homeostasis (proteostasis) is known to cause cellular malfunction, cell death, and diseases. Elaborate regulation of protein synthesis and degradation is one of the important processes in maintaining normal cellular functions. Protein degradation pathways in eukaryotes are largely divided into proteasome-mediated degradation and lysosome-mediated degradation. Proteasome is a multisubunit complex that selectively degrades 80% to 90% of cellular proteins. Proteasome-mediated degradation can be divided into 26S proteasome (20S proteasome + 19S regulatory particle) and free 20S proteasome degradation. In 1980, it was discovered that during ubiquitination process, wherein ubiquitin binds to a substrate protein in an ATP-dependent manner, ubiquitin acts as a degrading signal to degrade the substrate protein via proteasome. Conversely, 20S proteasome degrades the substrate protein without using ATP or ubiquitin because it recognizes the oxidized and structurally modified hydrophobic patch of the substrate protein. To date, most studies have focused on protein degradation via 26S proteasome. This review describes the 26S/20S proteasomal pathway of protein degradation and discusses the potential of proteasome as therapeutic targets for cancer treatment as well as against diseases caused by abnormalities in the proteolytic system.

This study presents a method for identifying partial discharge defects in an eco-friendly gas insulated system using a backpropagation algorithm. Four partial discharge (PD) electrode systems, namely, a free-moving particle, protrusion on the conductor, protrusion on the enclosure, and voids, were designed to simulate PD defects that can occur during the operation of eco-friendly gas-insulated switchgear. The PD signals were measured using an ultrahigh-frequency sensor as a nonconventional method based on IEC 62478. To identify the types of PD defects, the PD parameters of single PD pulses in the time and frequency domains and the phase-resolved partial discharge patterns were extracted, and a back-propagation algorithm in the artificial neural network was designed using a virtual instrument based on LabVIEW. The backpropagation algorithm proposed in this paper has an accuracy rate of over 90% for identifying the types of PD defects, and the result is expected to be used as a reference database for asset management and maintenance work for eco-friendly gas-insulated power equipment.
Paclitaxel is a taxane diterpene amide, which was first extracted from the stem bark of the western yew, Taxus brevifolia. This natural product has proven to be useful in the treatment of a variety of human neoplastic disorders, including ovarian cancer, breast and lung cancer. Paclitaxel is a highly hydrophobic drug that is poorly soluble in water. It is mainly given by intravenous administration. Therefore, The pharmaceutical formulation of paclitaxel ($Taxol^{(R)}$; Bristol-Myers Squibb) contains 50% $Cremophor^{(R)}$ EL and 50% dehydrated ethanol. However the ethanol/Cremophor EL vehicle required to solubilize paclitaxel in $Taxol^{(R)}$ has a pharmacological and pharmaceutical problems. To overcome these problems, new formulations for paclitaxel that do not require solubilization by $Cremophor^{(R)}$ EL are currently being developed. Therefore this study utilized a supercritical fluid antisolvent (SAS) process for cremophor-free formulation. To select hydrophilic polymers that require solubilization for paclitaxel, we evaluated polymers and the ratio of paclitaxel/polymers. HP-${\beta}$-CD was used as a hydrophilic polymer in the preparation of the paclitaxel solid dispersion. Although solubility of paclitaxel by polymers was increased, physical stability of solution after paclitaxel/polymer powder soluble in saline was unstable. To overcome this problem, we investigated the use of surfactants. At 1/20/40 of paclitaxel/hydrophilic polymer/ surfactant weight ratio, about 10 mg/mL of paclitaxel can be solubilized in this system. Compared with the solubility of paclitaxel in water ($1\;{\mu}g/mL$), the paclitaxel solid dispersion prepared by SAS process increased the solubility of paclitaxel by near 10,000 folds. The physicochemical properties was also evaluated. The particle size distribution, melting point and amophorization and shape of the powder particles were fully characterized by particle size distribution analyzer, DSC, SEM and XRD. In summary, through the SAS process, uniform nano-scale paclitaxel solid dispersion powders were obtained with excellent results compared with $Taxol^{(R)}$ for the physicochemical properties, solubility and pharmacokinetic behavior.

Effect of boundary layer thickness on the flow characteristics around a rectangular prism has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Three different boundary layers(thick, medium and thin)were generated in the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel at Pusan National University. The thick boundary layer having 670 mm thickness was generated by using spires and roughness elements. The medium thickness of boundary layer($\delta$=270 mm) was the natural turbulent boundary layer at the test section floor with fairly long developing length(18 m). The thin boundary layer($\delta$=36.5 mm) was generated on the smooth panel elevated 70cm from the wind tunnel floor. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity(3 ㎧) and the height of the model(40 mm) was 7.9$\times$10$^3$. The mean velocity vector fields and turbulent kinetic energy distributions were measured and compared. The effect of boundary layer thickness was clearly observed not only in the length of separation bubble but also in the location of reattachment point. The thinner the boundary layer thickness, the higher the turbulent kinetic energy Peak around the model roofbecame. It is strongly recommended that the height ratio between the model and the approaching boundary layer thickness should be encountered as a major parameter.
Polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared via latex technology and the effect of nanotube length on rheological properties were investigated. Monodisperse PS particle was synthesized by the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization and two types of MWCNTs were used after surface modification to improve dispersion state and to remove impurities. Final nanocomposites were prepared by the freeze-drying process after dispersing the PS particles and the surface-modified MWCNTs in a ultrasonic bath. The effects of MWCNT content and nanotube length on rheological properties were evaluated by imposing the small-amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The PS/MWCNT nanocomposites showed that rheological properties were enhanced as the amount and length of MWCNT increased. It is speculated that the rheological characteristics of nanocomposites change from liquid-like to solid-like as the MWCNT amount increases, and the critical concentration to achieve network structure decreases as the nanotube length increases.
The assembly of the main system of the KSTAR tokamak has been recently completed, and the preparation for the 1st plasma and test operations is progressed. The fueling system established for these purposes uses only one port placed at the opposite side of the pumping duct, and has a difficulty of attaining a uniform and fast supply of fuel particles to the plasma. At the base operation stage after finishing the test operation, the fueling system must be improved to provide a uniform fueling and a feed-back control in accordance with a high-density tokamak plasma maintained for a long period. As a part for understanding the points to be improved in the fueling system, a Monte Carlo simulation on the gas fueling into the tokamak plasma has been executed. After modeling the vacuum vessel and the plasma of quasi-D shapes as tori of rectangular cross-sections, the influences of the position and the number of the fueling inputs on the particle density distribution for a given pumping probability and mean free path were investigated.
