  • Insight into behaviour of pedestrians as well as tools to assess passenger flow conditions are important in for instance planning and geometric design of railway station under regular and safety-critical circumstances. Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) is newly developed. There are lots of similarity between particle-laden two phase flow and passenger flow. The velocity component of 1st phase corresponds to the unit vector of calculation cell, each particle to passenger, volume fraction to population density and the particle velocity to the walking velocity, etc. And, the walking velocity of passenger is also represented by the function of population density. Key algorithms are developed to determine the position of passenger, population density and numbering to each passenger. To verify the effectiveness of new algorithm, passenger flow analysis for the basic models of railway station is conducted.

  • This paper briefly reviews various existing methods to account for the effect of particle size on mechanical properties of particulate metal matrix composites. A simple and easy method is to use a size-dependent constitutive equation for the matrix. The suggested method does not require the development of a new computational algorithm and is compatible with any standard finite element software. Finite element analyses have been carried out to show how the deformation behavior of a metal matrix composite changes as the particle size and volume fraction are varied.

  • The paper attempts to estimate the incubation time of a cavity in the interface between a power law creep particle and an elastic matrix subjected to a uniaxial stress. Since the power law creep particle is time dependent, the stresses in the interface relax. The volume free energy associated with Helmholtz free energy includes strain energies caused by applied stress and dislocations piled up in interface(DPI). The energy due to DPI is found by modifying the result of Dundurs and Mura[4]. The volume free energies caused by both applied stress and DPI are a function of the cavity size(r) and elapsed time(t) and arise from stress relaxation in the interface. Critical radius $r^*$ and incubation time $t^*$ to maximise Helmholtz free energy is found in present analysis. Also, kinetics of cavity formation are investigated using the results obtained by Riede [7]. The incubation time is defined in the analysis as the time required to satisfy both the thermodynamic and kinetic conditions. Through the analysis it is found that 1) strain energy caused by the applied stress does not contribute significantly to the thermodynamic and kinetic conditions of a cavity formation, 2) in order to satisfy both thermodynamic and kinetic conditions, critical radius $r^*$ decreases or holds constant with increase of the time until the kinetic condition(eq. 2.3) is satisfied. there for the cavity may not grow right after it is formed, as postulated by Harris [15], and Ishida and Mclean [16], 3) the effects of strain rate exponent (m), material constant $\sigma$0, volume fraction of the particle to matrix(f)and particle size on the incubation time are estimated using material constants of the copper as matrix.

  • As increasing interest for soot emission. etc in combustion systems, various studies are being carried out for the reduction and measurement techniques of soot. Especially, laser induced incandescence is the useful measurement technique which has distinguished spatial and temporal resolution for primary particle size, volume fraction and aggregated particle size etc. Time resolved laser induced incandescence is the technique for measuring primary particle size that is decided to solve the signal decay rate which is related to the cooling behavior of heated particle by pulsed laser. The cooling behavior of heated particle is able to represent the heat and mass transfer model which are involved constants of soot property for surround gas temperature on the our previous work. In this study, it is applied to the time-dependence thermodynamic properties for soot temperature instead of constants of soot property for surround gas temperature and compared two different model results.

  • Characteristics of anbient at Korean, Cheju Island have been studied during the intensive field study period on March 11 .sim. 17, 1994 in collaboration with other research organizations from Korea and abroad. The particle size distribution was measured using an Electrical Aerosol Analyzer(EAA) and an Optical particle Counter(OPC). Fine particles(PM1 and PM3) have been collected by filter pack samplers and their ionic compositions have been analyzed. sampling errors inherent to the filter pack sampling method are discussed and the method to analyze those errors are presented. The rine mass concentrations of this study show very similar mass concentrations when Seoul is clear. This is somewhat surprising result, because the most of researchers believe that Kosan is one of the cleanest area in Korea. Bimodal volume size distributions with peak values around 0.1 .sim. 0.2.mu.m and 3.mu.m in particle dimeter were observed for most of the measurement period, particle mass loadings and ionic composition data show a large fraction of particles are from non-sea salt origins. Estimation of water content and acidity of particles based on measurement by a gas/particle equilibrium model, SCAPE, reveals that the pH values of particles are comparable to or lower than those estimated based on measurements in Los Angeles, U.S.A. during the SCAQS study. These findings with the meteorological conditions during the study period suggest that the particles collected during the period have originated from outside Cheju Island.

  • The effects of particle size distribution on the magnetorheological response of inverse ferrofluids was investigated using controlled mixtures of two monodisperse non-magnetisable powders of sizes $4.6\;{\mu}m\;and\;80{\mu}m$ at constant volume fraction of 30%, subjected to large amplitude oscillatory shear flow. In the linear viscoelastic regime (pre-yield region), it was found that the storage and loss moduli were dependent on the particle size as well as the proportion of small particles, with the highest storage modulus occurring for the monodisperse small particles. In the nonlinear regime (post yield region), Fourier analysis was used to compare the behaviour of the $1^{st}\;and\;3^{rd}$ harmonics ($I_{1}\;and\;I_{3}\;respectively$) as well as the fundamental phase angle as functions of the applied strain amplitude. The ratio of $I_{3}/I_{1}$ was found to become more pronounced with decreasing particle size as well as with increasing proportion of small particles in the bidisperse mixtures. Furthermore, the phase angle was able to clearly show the transition from solid-like to viscous behaviour. The results suggested that the nonlinear response of a bidisperse IFF is dependent on particle size as well as the proportion of small particles in the system.

  • In this study, we have investigated microstructure, mechanical properties and wear characteristic of aluminum metal matrix composites with a high volume fraction and uniformly dispersed SiC particles which produced by a liquid pressing process. The volume fraction of bimodal SiC/Al7075 composite was 12% higher than that of the monomodal SiC/Al7075 composite and a compressive strength is increased about 200 MPa. As a result of the abrasion test, the wear width and depth of the bimodal SiC/Al7075 composite were $285.1{\mu}m$ and $0.45{\mu}m$, respectively. The coefficient of friction of bimodal SiC/Al7075 was 0.16.

  • The mechanical properties of $MoSi_2$ based composites containing various types of reinforcement, such as SiC, $ZrO_2$, and W, were investigated, based on detailed examinations of their microstructures. $MoSi_2$ based composites were fabricated at a temperature of $1350^{\circ}C$ using a hot-press device. The volume fraction of SiC and $ZrO_2$ particles in this composite system was fixed as 20%. The volume fraction of three types of W particles was changed from 10% to 30%. The characteristics of the $MoSi_2$ based composites were determined by means of optical microscopy and a three-point bending test. The addition of W particles to the $MoSi_2$ powders exhibited a sufficient improvement in the microstructure and mechanical property of the sintered $MoSi_2$ materials, compared to those of SiC and $ZrO_2$ particles. In particular, W/$MoSi_2$ composites containing W particles of 20 vol% represented a good flexural strength of about 530MPa at room temperature, accompanying a relative density of about 92%. The flexural strength of the W/$MoSi_2$ composites tended to decrease with an increase in the average size of the W particles.

  • In this study, the stress-strain relations of steels have been calculated as a function of microstructural morphologies of each phase by use of FEM program(i.e. ABAQUS). The mechanical behavior of low carbon steels is affected by the microstructural factors such as yield ratio, volume fraction, shape and distribution of each phase and so on. The effects of shape, volume fraction and yield ratio of each phase on the mechanical behavior were analyzed by using unit cell and whole specimen size models. Results obtained are summarized as follows. As the yield ratio of hard phase to that of soft phase and volume fraction of hard phase were increased, stress level of flow curves were increased. It was found that in whole specimen size model, as the particle size was decreased, higher stress level was shown. Lastly the relationship between microstructure and tensile properties was examined by using the steels with various microstructural morphologies.
