  • A visualization study of flow characteristics in a mixer using multi-nozzle bubbling was performed. The mixer is filled with liquid glycerin (dynamic viscosity = $1000mPa{\cdot}$ s at $25^{\circ}C$) and convective mixing is induced by air bubbles generated from 9 orifices installed on the bottom of the mixer. To visualize the flow field, PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) system consisting of 532nm Nd:YAG laser, $2k\times2k$ CCD camera and synchronizer is adopted. The bubbles generated with uniform size and frequency form bubble stream, and bubble streams rise vertically without interaction between bubble streams. Mixing efficiency is affected by the height of bubbler and the effective height of bubbler is 20mm from the bottom of the mixer.

  • Recently, Chemical Mechanical Polishing(CMP) has become a leading planarization technique as a method for silicon wafer planarization that can meet the more stringent lithographic requirement of planarity for the future submicron device manufacturing. The SOI(Silicon On Insulator) wafer has received considerable attention as bulk-alternative wafer to improve the performance of semiconductor devices. In this paper, the objective of study is to investigate Material Removal Rate(MRR) and surface micro-roughness effects of slurry and pad in the CMP process. When particle size of slurry is increased, Material Removal rate increase. Surface micro-roughness is greater influenced by pad than by particle size of slurry. As a result of AM measurement, surface micro-roughness was improved from 27 $\AA$ Rms to 0.64 $\AA$Rms.

  • The dispersing activity and physical properties of exopolysaccharide (Cystan) produced by Cystobacter sp. MSL-9 was studied. Dispersing activity of Cystan was measured by using bentonite, calcium carbonate, and kaolin. Rheological properties of Cystan were investigated by using a rheometer MCR300. It was found that dispersing activity of Cystan was maintained under various pH and temperature conditions. A particle size analyzer BI-9000AT was used for the particle size measurement of Cystan in aqueous solution. The high dispersing activity and stability under various pH and temperature conditions showed the feasibility of Cystan as a industrial biodispersant.

  • Flocculation kinetics using ferric nitrate as a coagulant to coagulate kaolin clay in water was examined as a tool to investigate the effect of low temperature under tightly controlled treatment conditions. Both the particle size distribution data obtained from Automatic Image Analysis (AIA) system and the on-line measurement of the degree of turbidity fluctuation in a flowing suspension by Photometric Dispersion Analyzer (PDA) were used to measure flocculation kinetics. Results show that cold water temperature had a pronounced detrimental effect on flocculation kinetics. For improving flocculation kinetics at low water temperature, maintaining constant pOH to adjust water chemistry for temperature changes was found to be partially effective only in the more acidic pH range studied.

  • Parametric investigation of the polyol process for the preparation of carbon supported Pt nano particles as catalysts for fuel cells was carried out. It was found that the concentration of glycolate anion, which is a function of pH, plays an important role in controlling Pt particle size and loading on carbon. It was observed that Pt loading decreased with increasing alkalinity of the solution. As evidenced by zeta potential measurement, this was mainly due to poor adsorption or repulsive forces between the metal colloids and the supports. In order to modify the conventional polyol process, the effect of the gas purging conditions on the characteristics of Pt/C was examined. By the optimization of the gas environment during the reaction, it was possible to obtain high loading of 39.5wt% with a 2.8 nm size of Pt particle. From the single cell test, it was found that operating in ambient $O_{2}$ at 70oC can deliver high performance of more than 0.6 V at 1.44 A $cm^{-2}$.

  • Continuous measurements of the extinction coefficient( $b_{ext}$ ) and scattering coefficient due to Particle( $b_{sp}$ ) were made during the fall 1993 in Seoul along with the measurements of the size distribution, ionic composition of particles. On the average, $b_{sp}$ values are 55% and 79% of $b_{ext}$ values during the clear and smoggy Periods respectively. Also the average values of $b_{ext}$ and $b_{sp}$ were 0.791$\times$10$^{-3}$ $m^{-1}$ (visual range 4.9km) and 0.628$\times$10$^{-3}$ $m^{-1}$ (visual range 6.2km) during the smoggy Period, and 0.297$\times$10$^{-3}$ $m^{-1}$ (visual range 13.1km) and 0.164$\times$10$^{-3}$ $m^{-1}$ (visual range 23.8km) during the clear period, respectively. The Peak at about 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of the Particle size distribution during the smoggy period is about four times higher than that during the clear period while the peaks at about 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ during both periods are similar. Also, the concentrations of sulfate and nitrate at about 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ during the smoggy Period are much higher than these during the clear Period.eriod.

  • The monolayer engineering diamond particles are aligned on the oxygen free Cu plates with electroless Ni plating layer. The mean diamond particle sizes of 15, 23 and $50{\mu}m$ are used as thermal conductivity pathway for fabricating metal/carbon multi-layer composite material systems. Interconnected void structure of irregular shaped diamond particles allow dense electroless Ni plating layer on Cu plate and fixing them with 37-43% Ni thickness of their mean diameter. The thermal conductivity decrease with increasing measurement temperature up to $150^{\circ}C$ in all diamond size conditions. When the diamond particle size is increased from $15{\mu}m$ to $50{\mu}m$ (Max. 304 W/mK at room temperature) tended to increase thermal conductivity, because the volume fraction of diamond is increased inside plating layer.

  • Synthesized monocrystalline nanodiamond (nD) particles are heat-treated at various temperatures to produce highly structured diamond crystals. The heat-treated nDs show different weight loss ratios during thermogravimetric analysis. The crystallinities of the heat-treated nDs are analyzed using Raman spectroscopy. The average particle sizes of the heat-treated nDs are measured by a dynamic light scattering (DLS) system and direct imaging observation methods. Moreover, individual dispersion behaviors of the heat-treated nD particles are investigated based on ultrasonic dispersion methods. The average particle sizes of the dispersed nDs according to the two different measurement methods show very similar size distributions. Thus, it is possible to produce highly crystallized nD powder particles by a heat-treatment process, and the nD particles are relatively easy to disperse individually without any dispersant. The heat-treated nDs can lead to potential applications such as in nanocomposites, quantum dots, and biomedical materials.

  • Investigating the physical and chemical properties of riverine wetlands is necessary to understand their distribution characteristics and depositional environment. This study investigated the physical (particle size, color, and type) and chemical properties (organic, inorganic, and moisture contents) of sediments in Samrak wetland, located in the Nakdong River estuary area in Busan, South Korea. The particle size analysis indicated that the hydraulic conductivity values for the coarse grain and the mixture of coarse and fine grains ranged from 2.03 to 3.49×10-1 cm s-1 and 7.18×10-3 to 1.24×10-7 cm s-1, respectively. In-situ water quality and laboratory-based chemical analyses and radon-222 measurement were performed on groundwater and surface water in the wetland and water from the nearby Nakdong River. The physical and chemical properties of Samrak wetland was characterized by the sediments in the vertical and lateral direction. The concentrations of chemical components in the wetland groundwater were distinctly higher than those in the Nakdong River water though the wetland groundwater and Nakdong River water equally belonged to the Ca-HCO3 type.

  • The aerosol nanoparticles are suspected to be exposed to workers in nanomaterial manufacturing facilities. However, the exposure assessment method has not been established. One of important issues is to characterize background level of nanoparticles in workplaces. In this study, intensive aerosol measurements were made at a $TiO_2$ manufacturing laboratory for five consecutive days in May of 2010. The $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were manufactured by the thermal-condensation process in a heated tube furnace. The particle number size distribution was measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer every 5 min, in order to detect particles ranging from 14.5 to 664 nm in diameter. Total particle number concentration shows a severe diurnal variation irrespective of manufacturing process, which was governed by nanoparticles smaller than 50 nm in diameter. During the background monitoring periods, significant peak concentrations were observed between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. due to the infiltration of secondary aerosol particles formed by photochemical smog. Although significant increase in nanoparticle concentration was also observed during the manufacturing process twice among three times, these particle peak concentrations were lower than those observed during the background measurement. It is suggested that the investigation of background particle contamination is needed prior to conducting main exposure assessment in nanomaterial manufacturing workplaces or laboratories.
