  • Velocity profiles of laminar, transition and turbulent boundary layers were investigated by using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) measurements on the flat plate at Mach 2.96. The Schlieren visualization and PIV measurements are also used to confirm whether the oblique shock wave generated from the leading edge affects the flow field over the flat plate. The laminar velocity profile measured from the experiment was well matched with the compressible Blasius solution. The velocity profile of the transition boundary layer was well correlated with the theoretical turbulent velocity profile from near the wall and the transition began from Re = $1.41{\times}106$. For the turbulent boundary layer, considering compressibility effects, the Van Driest-transformed velocity satisfies the incompressible log-law. It is found that the log region is extended farther in the wall-normal direction compared to the log region in incompressible boundary layer.

  • This study investigates the behavior of a plunging wave and its associated runup and overtopping through velocity measurements and suggests an empirical formula for overtopping velocities on a structure. The plunging wave breaking in front of the structure generates very bubbly flow fields. For measurements of the two phase flow field of the breaking wave, particle image velocimetry and a modified optical method were employed. The obtained velocity fields were discussed in respect of the process of wave impinging, runup and overtopping. The overtopping velocity distribution is found to have a nonlinear profile showing a maximum magnitude at its front part. The relationship of self-similarity among dimensionless parameters is observed and used to obtain the regression formula to depict the overtopping velocity.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed by flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid along the test tube. Using the Particle Image Velocimetry method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity with swirl for Re = 20.000. 30.000, 50.000. and 70.000 along longitudinal sections and the results appear to be physically reasonable.

  • The Characteristics of the conical vortices on the roof surface of a low-rise building has been investigated by using a PIV(Particle Image Velocimerty) technique. The scaled model of TTU building with 1:92 scaling ratio was used. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and the length of the model was $1.96{\times}10^5$. When the angle of attack for the building model is $45^{\circ}$, the conical vortices are occurred symmetrically and the center of vortices are changed with respect to the angle of the approaching flow. The rotating direction of the conical vortices found to be counter-rotating. The secondary vortex motions are investigated using the instantaneous flow field data.

  • This experimental study was performed to find rpms of the impeller and the surface flow accelerator to make a uniform velocity vertical distribution in the circular water channel. PIV technique was employed to measure the water velocity profiles into the water depth from the free surface. The number of instantaneous velocity profiles was decomposed into mean and turbulence velocity components, and the distribution of velocity fluctuation and turbulence intensity were computed for each experimental condition. From these results, the velocity uniformity was quantitatively determined to present the flow quality in the measuring section of the circular water channel. It has been shown that the proper operation of the surface flow accelerator would make the uniform velocity profiles and reduce the velocity fluctuation near the free surface.

  • In this study, the effect of velocity ratio and particle size on the flow mixing characteristics in the secondary combustor was investigated. Both PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique and LES(Large Eddy Simulation) were applied. Two sizes of Polystyrene PIV seeding particle of 5 and $50{\mu}m$, and three velocity ratios of 5, 3, and 1.5 were considered. Results showed that the mixing of two air streams created reattachment and recirculation regions. The size of the recirculation region was decreased as the velocity ratio increased. For the larger particle cases, due to the increased momentum by the larger particles, the size of the recirculating regions were larger than that of the smaller particle cases and the effect of the velocity ratio was not as significant as in the smaller particle case.

  • In the present study, we separated the marker particles from the suspending particle mixture solution using isotacho-electrophoresis technique, a novel quantitative ionic particle separation method, in the microchannel. A multiple stacking zone of the suspending particle was visualized with variations in electric field strength, pH value and concentration of the ionic solution. In particular, the electrophoretic mobility of ionic particle (fluorescein) was estimated based on the electrophoretic velocity value measured by the particle image velocimetry. As a result, isotacho-electrophoresis zones were clearly visualized as going downstream in the electric field. The particle migration velocity increased proportional to the applied voltage increase; it was also affected by the pH value variations in the ionic solution.

  • Digital image analysis techniques have been developed and utilized in the field of solid mechanics and fluid mechanics to measure the deformation and velocity of a target object. The deformation measurement systems based on Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) have been attempted in geotechnical testings (e.g., physical model tests) for observing the deformation of soils. The digital image analysis is influenced by image pattern of test materials, resolution of the used digital camera, target area, image analysis techniques, and analysis conditions. Therefore, optimal analysis conditions should be determined to obtain high quality results on soil deformations. In the present study, various influence factors on the digital image analysis were described and summarized. The optimizing procedure for high accurate results was then proposed. Finally, the applicability of the developed procedure was examined.
