Flow Visualization Study on the Turbulent Mixing of Two Fluid Streams (III) (분지관 혼합기의 난류혼합에 대한 유동가시화 연구(III))

  • A flow visualization study was carried out for the branch pipe mixing flow in which a jet was issued normally to the fully developed pipe flow. An instantaneous laser tomographic method was used for cross flow Reynolds numbers based on the cross flow diameter D ranged $Re_{cf}=5.26{\times}10^3{\sim}1.13{\times}10^4$, diameter ratios d/D = 0.1 ~ 0.2 and velocity ratios R = 0.5 ~ 10. Oil mist with the size of about $10{\mu}m$ diameter was used for the scattering particle. The main purpose of this study was to reveal the physical mechanism and the structure of vortices formation with varying the velocity ratios and diameter ratios in the branch pipe flow. It was found that the physical mechanism and the structures of vortices formation were quite different depending on the velocity ratios. Particularly in the case of R < 1, the typical vortex shows single loop shape and that for the case of R > 1 depicts mushroom-like structure in the cross flow jet.

  • Since PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) provides velocity vectors by tracking each particle in a fluid flow, it has significant benefits when used for nano- and bio-fluid flows. However, PTV has only been used for limited flow fields because interpolation data loss is inevitable in PTV in principle. In this paper, a hybrid particle image velocimetry (PIV) algorithm that eliminates interpolation data loss was constructed by using an affine transformation. For the evaluation of the performance of the constructed hybrid PIV algorithm, an artificial image test was performed using Green-Taylor vortex data. The constructed algorithm was tested on experimental images of the wake flow (Re = 5,300) of a rectangular body ($6cm\;{\times}3cm$), and was demonstrated to provide excellent results.

  • One thing to note in cyclone operation and design is to minimize the pressure drop with the enhancement of the efficiency of dust collection. This can be facilitated by the detailed resolution of complex fluid flow occurring inside a cyclone. To this end, the main objective of this study was to obtain the detailed fluid dynamics by the development of a reliable computation method and thereby to figure out the physics of dust collection mechanism for more extreme environment caused by high temperature and pressure condition. First of all, the computer program developed was evaluated against experimental result. That is, the numerical calculation predicts well the data of experimental pressure drop as a function of flow rate for the elevated pressure and temperature condition employed in this study. The increase of pressure and temperature generally affects significantly the collection efficiency of fine particle but the effect of pressure and temperature appears contrary each other. Therefore, the decrease of collection efficiency caused by the high operating temperature mainly due to the decrease of gaseous density can be remedied by increase of operating pressure. After the evaluation of the program, a series of parametric investigations are performed in terms of major cyclone design or operating parameters such as tangential velocity and vortex finder diameter for dusts of a certain range of particle diameters, etc. As expected, tangential velocity plays the most important effect on the collection efficiency. And the efficiency was not affected significantly by the change of the length of vortex finder but the diameter of vortex finder plays an important role for the enhancement of collection efficiency.

Measurement of Liquid-Metal Flow with a Dynamic Neutron Radiography (중성자 래디오그래피를 이용한 액체금속 유동장 측정)

  • The flow-field of a liquid-metal system is very important for the safety analysis and the design of the steam generator of liquid-metal fast breeder reactor. Dynamic neutron radiography (DNR) is suitable for a visualization and measurement of a liquid metal flow and a two-phase flow in a metallic duct. However, the three dimensional DNR techniques is not enough to obtain the velocity information in the wide channel up to now. In this research, a high speed DNR technique was applied to visualize the heavy liquid-metal flow field in the narrow channel with the HANARO-beam facility. The images were taken with a high frame-rate neutron radiography at 250 fps and analyzed with a Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) method. The images were compared with the results of the commercial CFX code to study the feasibility of DNR technique for the measuring the heavy liquid-metal flow field. The PIV images could discern the turbulent vortex flow in the two-dimensional narrow channel.

  • 디젤기관의 경우는 종래부터 직분식이 주류를 이루었고, 근래에는 분사압력의 고압화가 진행중이다. 분사압력의 고압화에 의해 연소효율의 향상 및 배출가스중의 입자상물질(PM:Particulate Matter)의 저감을 유도하고 있으나, 연소가스의 고온화로 인해 질소산화물(NOx:Nitrogen Oxides)은 증가한다. 따라서, 분사기간의 지연(Retard)이나 파일럿분사(Pilot injection)등의 혼합기제어에 의해 질소산화물의 저감을 꾀하고 있다. 이와 같이 디젤기관에 있어서도 혼합기 형성의 최적화에 의한 연소제어를 시도하는 수법이 중시되고 있고, 이를 위해서는 디젤분무 구조에 기초한 혼합기의 형성기구에 대한 규명이 매우 중요하다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 보다 고도의 혼합기형성 제어를 위한 기초연구로서 고온 고압장에서의 증발디젤자유분무구조를 해석하였으며, 계측영역은 연료와 주위기체와의 혼합이 활발히 진행되는 분무의 하류영역으로 설정하고, 입자화상속도측정법(particle Image Velocimetry:PIV)을 이용한 분무의 유동해석을 기초로 증발 디젤분무의 구조 해석을 행하였다. 실험조건으로서 분사압력을 72MPa, 112MPa로 각각 변화시켰다.

Flow Visualization of Turbulent Flow around a Sphere (구(球) 주위 난류유동의 정량적 가시화)

  • The turbulent flow around a sphere was investigated in a streamwise meridian plane using two experimental techniques: smoke-wire flow visualization in wind tunnel at Re=5,300 and PIV measurements in a circulating water channel at Re=7,400. The smoke-wire visualization shows flow separation points near an azimuthal angle of $90^{\circ}$, recirculating flow, transition from laminar to turbulent shear layer, evolving vortex roll-up and fully turbulent eddies in the sphere wake. In addition, the mean flow pattern extracted by particle tracing method in water tunnel at Re= 14,500 reveals two distinct comparable toroidal(not closed) vortices in the recirculation region. The mean velocity field measured using a PIV technique demonstrates the detailed wake configuration of close symmetric recirculation and near-wake configuration with two toroidal vortices, reversed velocity zone and vorticity contours.

  • Vortexing might occur during draining from tanks which reduces the rate of outflow. This phenomenon has practical relevance in the fuel feed system in space vehicles and rockets. Due to environmental disturbances rotational motion can be generated in the liquid-propellant tank, which in turn can affect the rate of outflow to the engines. The phenomenon is initialized by rotating the fluid In the experimental tank. The dip quickly develops into a vortex with an air core, which extends to the bottom port, reducing the effective cross-sectional area of the drain outlet and consequently the flow rate. Flow characteristics are investigated using SPIV(Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry) method.

Recalculation of the Particle Dynamic Model for Gas-Solid Cyclone (싸이클론에 대한 입자운동방정식의 재계산)

  • In the present study, one of the widely applied equations for gas-solid cyclones, Leith and Licht model, was evaluated based on the 3-D CFD technique. The initial and boundary values of radial position and tangential velocity obtain-ed from the CFD simulation enabled complete calculation of the nonlinear second differential equation. This approach showed about 30% errors between calculations with and without the second order differential term. The calculation by using the simple first order equation presented shorter times to migrate up to the inner wall of the cyclone than by the second order, which theoretically implies higher separation efficiency. Further comparison is now under evaluation in terms of the detailed grade efficiency.

A Study on the Flow Control in a Wide Angle Diffuser by Installation of a Rectangular Prism (광각디퓨저의 내부에 설치된 장방형 각주를 이용한 유동제어에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a experimental work to investigate the influence of a turbulent wake flow on the velocity distribution of a diffuser with PIV method. The turbulent wake is generated by a rectangular prism, which is installed at the inlet of a diffuser. The results show that the velocity recovery of the subsonic diffuser is dependent on the height and location of rectangular prism. It is found that a certain height of the rectangular prism to generate the turbulent wake give a better velocity recovery, compared with no rectangular prism.

  • The complicated flow characteristics of upper propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated in detail in the present study. A two-frame PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique was employed to visualize the upper propeller wake region. As the upper hull wake affects strongly propeller inflow, upper propeller wake shows much unstable vortical behavior, especially in the tip vortices. Velocity field measurements were conducted in a cavitation tunnel with a simulated hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the hull of a marine ship may cause different loading distributions on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The unstable upper propeller wake caused by the ship's hull is expressed in terms of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and is identified by using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to characterize the coherent flow structure in it. Instabilities appeared in the eigen functions higher than the second one, giving unsteadiness to the downstream flow characteristics. The first eigen mode would be useful to find out the tip vortex positions immersed in the unstable downstream region.
