In this research a novel two-reference-beam double pulse holographic technique for the measurments of particle sizes and velocities was developed. This holographic method features the capability of separation of the first and second particle images by using two reference beams instead of one and the change of the polarization direction of laser light. The developed holographic system was tested through the measurements of droplet sizes and velocities in the spray created by two high speed impinging jets. The overall spray pattern clearly revealed the inherent wave nature. Smaller and faster droplets were generated with larger impingement angle, higher jet velocity. and smaller orifice diameter.
Steel slag has been considered as an industrial waste. A huge amount of slag is produced as a byproduct and the steel slag usually has been dumped in a landfill site. However the steel slag contains valuable resources such as iron, copper, manganese, and magnesium. Superconducting magnetic separation has been applied on recovery of the valuable resources from the steel slag and this process also has intended to reduce the waste to be dumped. Cryo-cooled Nb-Ti superconducting magnet with 100 mm bore and 600 mm of height was used as the magnetic separator. The separating efficiency was evaluated in the function of magnetic field. A steel slag was ground and analyzed for the composition. Iron containing minerals were successfully concentrated from less iron containing portion. The separation efficiency was highly dependent on the particle size giving higher separating efficiency with finer particle. The magnetic field also effects on the separation ratio. Current study showed that an appropriate grinding of slag and magnetic separation lead to the recovery of metal resources from steel slag waste rather than dumping all of the volume.
A triboelectrostatic separation system for removing unburned carbon from coal fly ash is designed and evaluated. Fly ash from a coal-fired power plant is used as an accepted additive in concrete where it adds strength, sulfate resistance and reduced cost, provided acceptable levels of unburned carbon are maintained. Unfortunately, unburned carbon in coal fly ash absorbs some of other additives and reduces the concrete strength. This paper describes to investigate dry triboelectrostatic process to separate unburned carbon from coal fly ash and utilize it into economically valuable products. The laboratory-scale triboelectrostatic separation system consists of a particle feeding system, a tribocharger, a separation chamber, and collection systems. Particles of unburned carbon and fly ash can be imparted positive and negative surface charges, respectively, with a copper tribocharger due to differences in the work function values of the particles and the tribocharger, and can be separated by passing them through an external electric field. Results showed that fly ash recovery was strongly dependent on the electric field strength and the particle size. 70wt% of fly ash containing 6.5wt% of carbon contents could be recovered at carbon contents below 3%. The triboelectrostatic separation system showed a potential to be an effective method for removing unburned carbon from coal fly ash.
We present the method of star/galaxy separation based on the support vector machines (SVM) in the data from the AKARI North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Deep survey collected through nine AKARI / IRC bands from 2 to $24{\mu}m$, with a classification accuracy of 93 %.

By controlling the internal pressure in the cyclone separator, we investigated the separation charateristics of $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ particles with the internal pressure variation. 3-dimensional Langrangian approach was applied for the analysis of the particles separation, and then the minimum cut diameter of the separated particles and the separation rate were calculated through tracking the particle trajectories. The density of the argon gas for transporting particles was decreased corresponding the pressure decrease, consequently, caused the internal pressure drop in the cyclone separator. For that reason the finer particles were separated as the pressure was changed from an atmospheric pressure to an low pressure. Specifically, at 50 torr pressure, $Al_2O_3$ particles of the size of about 4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and $Fe_2O_3$particles of about 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ could be separated.
Cell separation from a heterogenous mixture sample is an essential process for downstream analysis in biological, chemical, and clinical applications. This study demonstrates an integrated hybrid device of the viscoelastic focusing in a straight rectangular channel and subsequent size-based separation using acoustophoresis to attain high efficiency and separation tunability. For particle pre-alignment in a viscoelastic fluid, the flow rate higher than 10 μl/min was required. Surface acoustic wave-based lateral migration of particles with different sizes (13 and 27 ㎛) was examined at various applied voltages and flow rate conditions. Therefore, the flow rate of 100 μl/min and the applied voltage of 20 Vpp can be used for size-based particle separation.

Although the demands for the dredging work have been increasing due to social and industrial reasons including national plan for restoration of four major rivers, environmental standards or management guidelines for the dredged river sediment are limited. The suggested environmental standard for the beneficial use of dredged river sediment consists of two levels, recyclable and concern, and includes eight contaminants such as metals and organic contaminants. The systematic approach to remediate dredged river sediment is also suggested. The system consists of both washing and stabilization processes with continuous multi particle separation. In the early stage, the sediments are separated into two particle sizes. The coarse-grained sediment over 0.075 mm, generally decontaminated with less trouble, follows normal washing steps and is sent for recycling. The fine-grained sediments under 0.075 mm are separated again at 0.025 mm. The particles bigger than this second separation point are treated in two ways, advanced washing for highly contaminated sediments and stabilization for less. The lab test results show that birnessite and apatite are most effective stabilizing agents among tested for Cd and Pb. The most fine residues, down-sized by continuous particle separation, are finally sent for disposal. The system is tested for metals in this study, but is expected to be effective for organic contaminants included in the environmental standard, such as PAH and PCE. The feasibility test on the field site will be followed.
As sediment contamination problems have recently been raised in Korea, the need for technologies to remove contaminants in sediments has increased. Contaminated sediments in Korea has been annually dredged and treated using processes of coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation on barges, dewatered and dried at prepared site, and then disposed at a landfill site, which is very costly, and only a limited landfill space available in Korea. Contaminants in media containing a high percentage of silt and clay sized particles, typically, are strongly adsorbed on the particles and difficult to remove. Particle separation processes that separate the fine clay and silt particles from the coarser sand and gravel and concentrate the contaminants into a smaller volume of sediment that can be further treated of disposed of, are very effective in the post step processes. In this study are to test the feasibility of treating dredged sediments using a hydrocyclone process, and to estimate design parameters for a pilot scale test. A hydrocyclone was operated to separate larger particles from the sediments. It was found that the particle separation was greatly affected by the solid contents and inlet pressure in the hydrocyclone.
