  • Aspects of the scintillation mechanism in organic systems obtained on the base of precise measurements of the radioluminescence pulse shape are discussed. It shown that the process of scintillation light pulse formation is mainly determined by initial conditions of exited states generation.

  • An fine silver particle has a variety of uses, such as in killing micrograms and as catalysts. Many techniques have been used for the production of the fine particles. Faraday cell, consisting of two silver electrodes in an electrolyte, is unique, but it is hard to get a very fine particle by this method. A finer silver nano-particle producing cell, utilizing a dielectric bed as a lower electric current and higher field controlling means, has been proposed and investigated. The I-V characteristics of the cell and effect of the dielectric bed on the producing finer silver nano-particles have been investigated. The I-V characteristics of the cell with the dielectric bed were different from that of the same system without the bed, due to the increased cell resistance and elevated electric field intensity. It is found that the proposed cell with the dielectric bed can produce finer silver nano-particles effectively, which, however, can be used as one of effective fine silver nano-particle producing means.

  • A hybrid dust-collector combining electrostatic charging with fabric filtration method was developed, and its performance characteristics were evaluated in this study. Charged particles build porous dendritic structure on the surfaces of filter by electrostatic attraction, increasing the collection efficiency of dust particles and reducing the pressure drop through the deposited dust layer and filter media. The cleaning performance of the dust layer is improved because the dendritic structured dust layer can be removed more easily by pulse jet cleaning flow. The results of the experiment showed a reduction of fine particle emission of 37% and the energy saving of 13% by precharging dust particles before filtration.

  • In this study digital holographic microscopy system for measurements of 3-D velocities of particles in MR fluid is developed. Holograms are recorded using either a CCD camera with a double pulse laser or a high-speed camera with a continuous laser. To process recorded holograms, the correlation coefficient method is used for focal plane determination of particles. To remove noise and improve the quality of holograms and reconstructed images, a Wiener filter is adopted. The two-threshold and image segmentation methods are used for binary image transformation. For particle pairing, the match probability method is adopted. The developed system will be applied to measurements of the characteristics of unsteady 3-D particle velocities in MR fluids through the next stage of this study.

  • A new technology was introduced to the emulsion polymerization. It is the ultrasonic activation method which replaced a chemical initiator and the environmentally benign process. In this study, free radicals were produced by a pulse type ultrasound energy irradiation, then polystyrene latex was polymerized without chemical initiator. With ultrasonic energy density, the degree of polymerization, average molecular weight, and particle size were increased, but the polydispersity index for the molecular weight and the particle size were decreased. The optimum condition of emulsifier concentration and temperature was found to be 1.0 wt.% SDS and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. As a result, the emulsion polymerization process without chemical initiator was proved to be comparable to common latex properties such as average molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, particle size, etc.

  • We studied driving characteristics according to the ratio of mass and charging (m/q) value for charged toner particles with black and yellow color in charged particle type display panel. After biasing rectangle pulse to the transparency electrodes of putted panel with toner particles, its response time and contrast ratio are simultaneously measured using a laser as a optical source, photodiode as a detector and reflective system. As a results, contrast ratio is largest at the shortest response time region which is different to the particle because of m/q. We proposed relational equation for response time, m/q, cell gap and biasing voltage. It has not been studied and reported to analyze the relationship of response time, biasing voltage, lumping phenomena, cell gap, and contrast ratio for toner particle type display.

  • In the alternative current plasma display panel(AC-PDP) technology, it is very important to remove the image sticking for improving an image quality. In this paper, we have investigated the driving method of alternative current plasma display panel(AC-PDP) for preventing image sticking. We have investigated the driving method of alternative current plasma display panel(AC-PDP) for preventing image sticking. The preventing method of image sticking was proposed by adopting the Sticking Remove Pulse(SRP). The variation of brightness is most affected by the MgO to be formed at the surface of the phosphor layer. As a result, the image sticking is reduced when the driving method adopted an SRP.

  • Temporal behavior of the laser induced incandescence (LII) signal is often used for soot particle sizing, which is possible because the cooling behavior of a laser heated particle is dependent on the particle size. In present study, LII signals of soot particles are modeled using two non-linear coupled differential equations deduced from the energy- and mass-balance of the process. The objective of this study is to see the effects of particle size, laser fluence on soot temperature characteristics and cooling behavior. Together with this, we focus on validating our simulation code by comparing with other previous results. Results of normalized LII signals obtained from various laser fluence conditions showed a good agreement with that of Dalzell and Sarofim's. It could be found that small particles cool faster at a constant laser fluence. And it also could be observed that vaporization is dominant process of heat loss during first 100ns after laser pulse, then heat conduction played most important role while thermal radiation had little influence all the time.

  • Mathematical model was developed to verify a sequential particle removal taking place in a granular media gravity filter. Consequential multi-layer filtration cycle model was applied to verify the fraction of filter effluent particles that are filter influent particles that were never removed as well as the fraction of filter effluent particles that were detached after deposition were performed through laboratory experiments. Three sizes of marker particles were injected ahead of the filter column as a pulse in the presence of four sizes of polystyrene particles that were used as a primary source of particles in the raw suspension to investigate particle attachment alone in contrast to net removal from attachment and detachment. Microscopic counting of filter effluent particles was assumed to reflect attachment. Experimental results indicated that particle detachment is significant beginning from the early phase of filtration. For each size of fluorescent microspheres at one filter depth, fluorescent microsphere removal increased with filter runtime to a maximum due to ripening. The detached fraction of effluent particles increased with particle size and filter depth. The presence of detached particles and the increasing fraction of detached particles in deeper bed were confirmed.
