  • The effects of reaction temperature, reactant concentration, pH of solution and mixing order of reactants on the particle shape and size distribution of zinc oxide were investigated in the preparation of zinc oxide from ammonium hydroxide and zinc acetate by the method of aqueous hydrothermal precipitation method, and the photocatalytic ability of zinc oxide synthesized was measured from the degradation of tartrazine under UV irradiation. The average particle size was increased with pH of solution but decreased with zinc acetate concentration and reaction temperature. The optimum condition for the synthesis of minimum sized zinc oxide was pH 11.2, concentration of zinc acetate 0.6 M and reaction temperature $90^{\circ}C$, and its average particle size was 3.133 ${\mu}$m. 97% of tartrazine was degraded by zinc oxide in sixty minutes.

  • In this study, we applied an increased surface area fractional precipitation with hydrophilic polymer for decreasing the particle size of the anticancer agent paclitaxel from plant cell cultures. The addition of polymer resulted in a considerable decrease in the size of the paclitaxel precipitate. Among the polymers (HPMC 2910, PVP-K90, PVA) used, PVP-K90 was the most effective for the inhibition of precipitate growth. When PVP-K90 (0.2%, w/v) was used, the paclitaxel particles were four to five times smaller, having less than a $20{\mu}m$ radius, than those obtained in the absence of the polymer. In addition, the precipitate size was inversely correlated with the absolute value of zeta potential.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the sudden rise of fine particle concentration after the passage of typhoon USAGI and NARI in Busan. Nocturnal inversion layer was formed at atmospheric boundary layer and wind direction changed from southerly wind to northeasterly wind after USAGI passed through Busan. Fine particle concentration in Busan rapidly increased by subsidence of air pollutants released from sources and dust transported from in the vicinity of industrial regions. Wind direction changed from northeasterly wind to southeasterly wind, wind velocity increased and lower atmosphere became extremely unstable after NARI passed through Busan. $PM_{10}$ concentration of Busan increased sharply because of surface dust dispersed by strong wind. Fine particle concentration generally decreases by precipitation and wind after typhoon passes through. However, the concentration can also go up not only by subsidence and transportation in nocturnal inversion layer but also by surface dust which temporarily occurs by strong wind.

  • Lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2, LCO) has been widely used as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its excellent electrochemical performance and highly reproducible synthesis even with mass production. To improve the energy density of the LIBs for their deployment in electro-mobility, the full capacity and voltage of the cathode materials need to exploited, especially by operating them at a higher voltage. Herein, we doped LCO with divalent calcium-ion (Ca2+) to stabilize its layered structure during the batteries' operation. The Ca-doped LCO was synthesized by two different routes, namely solid-state and co-precipitation methods, which led to different average particle sizes and levels of dopant's homogeneity. Of these two, the solid-state synthesis resulted in smaller particles with a better homogeneity of the dopant, which led to better electrochemical performance, specifically when operated at a high voltage of 4.5 V. Electrochemical simulations based on a single particle model provided theoretical corroboration for the positive effects of the reduced particle size on the higher rate capability.

  • For the production of a high-density ITO target, $In_2O_3$ powders with a small particle size and low agglomeration should be synthesized. The purpose of this study is to control the size and shape of the Indium hydroxide precursor which affects the properties of the $In_2O_3$ powder. As a starting raw material, Indium metal was dissolved in a Nitric acid ($HNO_3$) solution. The effect of concentration, pH, and temperature on the properties of Indium hydroxide was investigated using ammonium hydroxide as a precipitant. Crystallite size of each sample was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and the shape and the size of the powder was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. As a result, the particle size of Indium hydroxide was increased with increase in the concentration of $In(NO_3)_3$ and the particle size and shape of the Indium hydroxide remained unchanged with increase in the pH of the solution. The particle size increased with increase in the precipitation temperature during precipitation.

  • Amphiphilic polyurethane(APU) particle is a polymeric surfactant, and could increase the solubility of 2-methylnaphthalene significantly. 2-Methylnaphthalene was recovered by the precipitation of APU particles and was degraded by Acinetobacter sp. K2-2. APU particle was recovered and reused after treatment of triethylamine.

  • We have investigated excitation processes of the 3-micron bands of $CH_4$, $C_2H_2$, and $C_2H_6$ over the auroral regions of Jupiter including particle bombardments, Joule heating, scattering of solar radiation, and possible chemiluminescence. We also considered possible LTE or Non-LTE conditions of these processes. We constructed particle precipitation models including $H_2$, He, H, and the hydrocarbon molecules for the atmosphere of the auroral regions. We present preliminary results from these models, and comparisons of the model results with spectroscopic observations in the 3 micron wavelength range of Jupiter.

  • We examine cyclotron resonant interactions of radiation belt electrons with VLF chorus, plasmaspheric ELF hiss and electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves. Bounce-averaged diffusion rates depend on wave mode, equatorial pitch-angle, electron energy and L-shell. As well, diffusion rates can be sensitive to the latitudinal distributions of particle density and wave power. For different configurations of the plasmasphere, we calculate electron precipitation loss timescales due to combined scattering by VLF chorus, ELF hiss and EMIC waves.

  • In this paper, The classification between precipitation echo(PRE) and non-precipitation echo(N-PRE) (including ground echo and clear echo) is carried out from weather radar data using neuro-fuzzy algorithm. In order to classify between PRE and N-PRE, Input variables are built up through characteristic analysis of radar data. First, the event classifier as the first classification step is designed to classify precipitation event and non-precipitation event using input variables of RBFNNs such as DZ, DZ of Frequency(DZ_FR), SDZ, SDZ of Frequency(SDZ_FR), VGZ, VGZ of Frequency(VGZ_FR). After the event classification, in the precipitation event including non-precipitation echo, the non-precipitation echo is completely removed by the echo classifier of the second classifier step that is built as Type-2 FCM based RBFNNs. Also, parameters of classification system are acquired for effective performance using PSO(Particle Swarm Optimization). The performance results of the proposed echo classifier are compared with CZ. In the sequel, the proposed model architectures which use event classifier as well as the echo classifier of Interval Type-2 FCM based RBFNN show the superiority of output performance when compared with the conventional echo classifier based on RBFNN.

  • In this study, an improved acetone-water fractional precipitation process for paclitaxel using ultrasonic cavitation bubbles and gas bubbles was developed. Compared to the conventional method, the time required for precipitation has been reduced by 20~25 times. In addition, the particle size of paclitaxel decreased by 3.5~5.5 times and the diffusion coefficient of paclitaxel increased by 3.5~6.7 times. In the case of precipitation using ultrasonic cavitation bubbles, as the ultrasonic power increased and the temperature decreased, the precipitation rate constant increased. In the case of precipitation using gas bubbles, as the gas flow rate increased and the temperature decreased, the precipitation rate constant increased. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the exothermic, irreversible, and nonspontaneous nature of the improved fractional precipitation.
