Mineral carbonation is a technology for permanently storing carbon dioxide by reacting with metal oxides containing calcium and magnesium. In this study, we used sea water and alkaline industrial by-product such as paper sludge ash (PSA) for the storage of carbon dioxide through direct carbonation. We found the optimum conditions of both sea water content (mixing ratio of sea water and PSA) and reaction time required in the direct carbonation through various experiments using sea water and PSA. In addition, we compared the amounts of carbon dioxide storage with the cases when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA. The amount of carbon dioxide storage was calculated by using both solid weight increase through the carbonation reaction and the contents of carbonate salts from thermal gravimetric analysis. PSA particle used in this study contained 67.2% of calcium. The optimum sea water content and reaction time in the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA were 5 mL/g and 2 hours, respectively, under the conditions of 0.05 L/min flow rate of carbon dioxide injected at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The amounts of carbon dioxide stored when sea water and ultra-pure water were separately used as solvents in the direct carbonation with PSA were 113 and $101kg\;CO_2/(ton\;PSA)$, respectively. The solid obtained through the carbonation reaction using sea water and PSA was composed of mainly calcium carbonate in the form of calcite and a small amount of magnesium carbonate. The solid obtained by using ultra-pure water, also, was found to be carbonate salt in the form of calcite.

Small scale paint overspray booths are being operated nationwidely, for repair of passenger car body parts. paint aerosols are emitted from the paint overspray booth in operations. In paint overspray booth operations without ventilation system and air pollutants collection unit, it may land on nearby equipment. In this study a removal of sticky paint aerosol for application of the small-scale overspray paint booth. it's cause the surface of filter bag from generated sticky paint aerosol. To remove adhesion of paint aerosol the agglomerating agents are injected and mixed with sticky paint aerosols prior to reach the filter bag. The paint spray rate was set as $10{\pm}5g/min$ from air-atomized spray guns in the spray booth, injection rate of agglomerating was $10{\pm}5g/min$ in the mixing chamber. The filtration velocity including air pollutants varied from 0.2 m/min to 0.4 m/min. Bag cleaning air pressure was set as $5.0kg_f/min$ for detaching dust cake from surface of filter bag. Bag cleaning interval at the filtration velocity of 0.2 m/min was around 3 times longer than that of the 0.4 m/min. The residual pressure drop maintained highest value at the highest filtration velocity. Fractional efficiency of 99.952%~99.971% was possible to maintain for the particle size of 2.5 microns. Total collection efficiency at the filtration velocity of 0.2 m/min was 99.42%. During this study we could confirm high collection efficiency and long cleaning intervals for the test with filtration velocity of 0.2 m/min indicating an optimal value for the given dimensions of the test unit and test operating conditions.

A number of process problems should be solved in the multi-layered ceramic devices such as EMI filter. In particular, it is essential to control the sintering shrinkage in co-firing of different materials for obtaining defect-free samples such as crack, camber, and delamination which usually occur near the surface and interface. We studied the effect of the powder properties of ferrite on the co-firing behavior of green ceramic layers composed of ferrite and varistor. Three kind of ferrite powder samples as a function of milling time (24, 48, and 72 hr) were prepared. Varistor and ferrite ceramic green sheet were made by means of doctor blade process using slurry (ceramic powder and binder solution). Here, slurry was prepared by mixing 55 wt% powder with 45wt% binder solution. Varistor and ferrite green sheets were laminated at $80 kg/cm^2$, and co-fired at $900^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 3 hr. We obtained the camber-free and co-fired ferrite/varistor layer structure by controlling the milling time and sintering temperature.
Characteristics of reduction and carbidization for hematite ore with a wide size range have been investigated at high temperature(590∼64$0^{\circ}C$) under $H_2$ and $H_2$-CO gas mixtures. The apparent activation energy for reduction of hematite ore with H2 gas was found to be 20 kJ/mol. The weight loss by reduction was about 28% md the weight gain by carbidization was about 5%. The measured values of weight change were compared with those calculated from equation (3) & (5) and fairly good agreement was obtained. The rate of carbidization was increased with an decrease in temperature, particle diameter and gas ratio($H_2$/ CO). The free carbon was increased with decrease in gas ratio($H_2$/ CO). The rate of carbidization was increased with mixing of $H_2$ gas but this effect was not proportional to fraction of $H_2$ gas. It was also found that the rate of carbidization was the maximum in the $H_2$ gas fraction of 0.5. It is considered that $H_2$ plays a part as a catalyst for formation of iron carbide($Fe_3$C).

Oxidation causes increment of the quantity of large molecular size or LMS in asphalt and is a major reason for hardening of asphalt binder. An extended service life of pavement on a road is expected by reducing oxidation of binder. Oxidation of binder occurs during hot mixing with aggregates before placement on road and then during in-service after the asphalt pavement is constructed. Quantitative increase of LMS as result of aging after RTFO and PAV was analyzed based on the data from high-pressure gel-permeation chromatography (HP-GPC). Polymer modified asphalt (PMA) after RTFO procedure showed 20-30% increment in LMS and then after PAV procedure more than twice, although the percentage of increment was different according to asphalt brand and grade. The PMAs containing LDPE or SBS, which showed a great mechanical property improvement in previous studies, were selected for characterizing PMA aging In this study. Considerably reduced increment of LMS was observed from the PMA containing LDPE after RTFO and PAV procedures. The GPC result showing the binder with less LMS increment means that the asphalt while being mixed with LDPE was aged less during the aging treatment. The dispersed particle of LDPE in asphalt cement seems to disturb oxidative aging reaction and evaporation.

This study was designed to survey exposure levels of formaldehyde among workplaces in some plywood industries and to compare three sampling methods including the impinger method(IM, NIOSH method No. 3500), the solid sorbent tube method(SS, NIOSH method No. 2541), and the passive bubbler monitor method(PB, SKC). The survey was conducted in seven particle board manufacturing factories, two resin manufacturing factories and two plywood manufacturing factories in Incheon area during the period from March 6 to April 20, 1995. The workplaces included were the hot/cold press, the roller/spreader, the soaking/drying, and the reaction/mixing areas. The results were as follows; 1. The average(GM, GSD) concentrations of formaldehyde by sampling methods were 0.11(4.43) ppm by IM, 0.27(2.03) ppm by SS, and 0.29(2.04) ppm by PB, respectively. The concentrations by 1M method were statistically very significantly lower than those of SS and PB methods, particularly at low air borne concentrations of formaldehyde (p<0.001). 2. The area average concentrations of formaldehyde by workplaces measured with PB bubblers were 0.23(2.08) ppm from the press, 0.23(1.77) ppm from the spreader, 0.24(1.51) ppm from the soaking, and 0.46(1.96) ppm from the reaction areas, respectively. The personal average concentrations of formaldehyde by workplaces measured with PB bubblers were 0.30(1.77) ppm from the press, 0.33(1.54) ppm from the spreader, 0.36(1.46) ppm from the soaking, and 0.84(1.19) ppm from the reaction areas, respectively. 3. No statistically significant differences of formaldehyde concentrations among workplaces except the reaction area(p<0.001) were found. 4. Formaldehyde concentrations from personal samples were higher than those of from area sam pies in all workplaces studied. But no statistically significant differences of formaldehyde concentrations both area and personal samples were found. In conclusion, this study found that although formaldehyde concentrations in some plywood industries in Incheon area were below the regulatory limit of 1 ppm, they were over the limits recommended by NIOSH and ACGIH. This study also suggests that the impinger method may underestimate true formaldehyde concentrations. It implies that there will be more workplaces not meeting current regulatory limit if either the solid sorbent or passive bubbler methods were used instead of the impinger method. It is suggested that passive monitors will be a reasonable alternative for area and personal sampling of formaldehyde if the accuracy and validity of passive monitors be verified before use.

In this study, reproducing specimens were made from mixing domestically produced magnetite, clay and non-plastic raw materials to reproduce the pigments used in the manufacture of traditional cheolhwa buncheong stoneware. In order to reveal the color fomation of glaze, 30 specimens with good color development were analyzed scientifically. Magnetite, which is the main raw material of the pigment, is a pigment capable of creating a dark black color in a reducing environment at 1,200℃. However, it reacts with the additionally added lime component and discolors to greenish yellow color in oxidizing environment at 1,230℃. Hematite is not significantly affected by the firing temperature and environment, but develops a dark black color when mixed with clay with iron content of more than 10%. The fluidity of the pigment is determined by R2O3/RO2 value, which also affects the color development. In the microtexture observation, the color formation of the glaze layer and the iron oxide crystals identified some differences depending on the particle size of the pigment and the firing environment. Reproduced specimens made of magnetite are present in the form of aggregates of iron oxide in the interface between glaze layer and slip layer in the oxidizing environment at 1,200℃. However, in the reducing environment, aggregates of iron oxides do not exist in the reproduced specimens, and they are homogeneously distributed in the glaze layer and formed a dark black color. In contrast, hematite-based specimens form dendritic structures in the glaze layer in an oxidizing environment and develop black.

Tracer experiments were carried out on two laboratory modes, "without media mode" and "with media mode", to examine the hydraulic characteristics of the anaerobic fluidized bed bioreactor (AFBR). For both configurations, a formula was derived for the hydraulics and data interpretation to obtain the actual characteristics of the reactor. The dispersion model is based on the assumption that carriers are non-reacting and the dispersion coefficient is constant. The model represents the one-dimensional unsteady-state concentration distribution of the non-reacting tracer in the reactors. The experimental results showed that the media increased the mixing conditions in the reactor considerably. For the reactor without media, in the range tested, the dispersion coefficient was at least an order of magnitude smaller than that of the reactor with media. Advective transport dominates and the flow pattern approaches the plug flow reactor (PFR) regime. The dispersion coefficient increased significantly as us, the superficial liquid velocity, was increased proportionally to 0.82cm/s. On the other hand, for the reactor with media, the flow pattern was in between a PFR and a completely mixed flow reactor (CMFR) regime, and the dispersion coefficient was saturated at us=0.41cm/s, remaining relatively constant, even at us=0.82cm/s. The dispersion coefficient depends strongly on the liquid Reynolds number (Re) or the particle Reynolds number (Rep) over the range tested.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the mixture ratio of a soldier fly casts (SFC), compost and cocopeat on the soil physicochemical properties. The mixture ratios of soil amendment were 0%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 10% (V/V) incorporated with sand which met to the USGA particle standard. To analyze the effects of amendments on soil chemical properties, pH and EC were measured. The porosity, capillary porosity, air-filled porosity, bulk density and hydraulic conductivity also measured to analyze the physical properties. Chemical properties were significantly different by mixture ratios of a SFC, compost and cocopeat. Capillary porosity was a factor involved in soil physical properties by blending with a SFC and compost. It was affected on the volume of porosity or hydraulic conductivity. To analyze the correlation of mixture ratio versus to physical characters, the ratios of SFC were significantly different in capillary porosity, air-filled porosity, and hydraulic conductivity. These results indicated that mixing ratios of SFC were affected on soil physicochemical properties such as porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the root zone on the USGA sand green.

Advanced industries-IT, BT, NT and ET are rapidly developing in 21 century. And the cement industry is becoming the principal factor in air pollution because of the creation of $CO_2$ during manufacturing. Also, the cement industry will be faced with a crisis due to the exhaustion of natural resources. In this study, nano cement by Bottom-up method of a chemical synthesis was developed. The generation of $CO_2$ during the plasticization process of cement manufacturing was avoided. The purpose was to produce building materials that have both high strength and durability as the high value-added growth engine industry of the 21 century. The nano cement was developed using hydrothermal synthesis. This is a method of mixing after ripening, by manufacturing the high density gel and low gel, which does not require special test equipment or pressure conditions to produce. Particle size, SEM, EDX, and porosity tests were conducted. This study investigated the compressive strength of concrete with various compositions. Specimens were tested for compressive strength at 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. The medium-sized (50% by weight) cement particles created by chemical synthesis were less than 168 nm. The compressive strength of the mortar prepared using this cement was 53.9 MPa. But it was judged that succeeding study will be necessary for development of nano building materials with high ability and economical analysis.
