A considerable deal of work has been carried out to get an insight into the gas-solid suspension flows and to specify the particle motion and its influence on the gas flow field. In this paper an attempt is made to develop an analytical model to study the effect of nozzle inlet/exit pressure ratio, particle/gas loading and the particle diameter effect on gas-solid suspension flow. The effect of the particle/gas loading on the mass flow, Mach number, thrust coefficient and static pressure variation through the nozzle is analyzed. The results obtained show that the presence of particles seems to reduce the strength of the shock wave. It is also found that smaller the particle diameter is, bigger will be the velocity as bigger particle will have larger slip velocity. The suspension flow of smaller diameter particles has almost same trend as that of single phase flow with ideal gas as working fluid. Depending on the ambient pressure, the thrust coefficient is found to be higher for larger particle/gas loading or back pressure ratio.
Candida cylindracea lipase was immobilized by adsorption on acid washed glass beads. It was observed that protein loading of the support depends on the size of the particle, with smaller particle containing higher amount of protein per unit weight. Initial reaction rate linearly varied up to enzyme concentration of 17.25 U/mL. Amount of free fatty acids produced was linearly proportional up to the enzyme loading of 1650 $\mu$g/g of bead. Achievement of chemical equilibrium took longer time in the case of less protein loading. Degree of hydrolysis was found to decrease in second and third consecutive batch operations on repeated use of immobilized lipase.
The effects of different transient loading conditions on xylene removability and bacterial activity were evaluated in the polyurethane (PU) biofilter inoculated with Rhodococcus sp. EH831: BF1 (the control) was operated under continuous and constant loading ($200{\pm}50ppm$); BF2 under continuous and constant loading after a 2-week long-term shutdown; BF3 under discontinuous (8 h on/16 h off on weekdays and a 2 day-shutdown at weekends); and constant loading BF4 under discontinuous and high loading ($700{\pm}300ppm$); and BF5 under continuous and fluctuating loading (high loading for 8 h and low loading ($75{\pm}25ppm$) for 16 h on weekdays and low loading at weekends). Xylene removal efficiencies in the BF1, BF2, BF3, and BF5 were ranged 83-89%, indicating that 2-week long-term shutdown, intermittent or fluctuant loading condition did not significantly influence the biofilter performance. However, discontinuous and high load condition (BF4) caused to deteriorate xylene removability to 52%. Rhodococcus sp. EH831 could be maintained at $10^9{\sim}10^{10}CFU/g-dry$ PU under 5 kinds of loading conditions. The result of polymerase chain reaction-terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism showed that there was no significant change in bacterial community structures by different loading conditions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the variations of rheological and magnetic properties with powder loading in plastic anisotropic ferrite magnets. The measured relative viscosities with powder loading were compared with the calculated ones. The variation of relative viscosities with powder loading was in good agreement with that of particle alignment. Remanent flux density and maximum energy product increased linearly with the increase of powder loading, and then showed maximum values. The decrease of magnetic properties at high powder loading was caused by rapid decrease of particle alignment due to the drastic increase of mixture viscosity. The powder loading for maximum magnetic properties is dependent on magnetic field during injection molding and melt viscosity of binder, so the binder with low melt viscosity is necessary to fabricate the magnet with high properties.
Recently, co-delivery of drug and gene has been attempted for higher therapeutic effects of anticancer agents. In this study, cationic liposomes were prepared using 1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammoniopropane (DOTAP) as a cationic lipid to investigate the effect of drug loading on the physicochemical characteristics of cationic liposomes/DNA complexes. The complex formation between cationic liposomes and negatively charged plasmid DNA was confirmed and the protection from DNase was observed. Particle size of complexes was reduced not by drug loading, but by the increased ratio of cationic lipid to plasmid DNA. Meanwhile, zeta potential of complex was increased by the addition of cationic liposomes to complexes and the effect of drug loading on the zeta potential was not much higher than on particle size. Gel retardation of complexes was indicated when the complexation weight ratios of cationic lipid to plasmid DNA were higher than 24:1 for drug free complexes and 20:1 for drug loaded ones, respectively. Agarose gel retardation showed the similar complexation between plasmid DNA and drug free liposomes or drug loaded liposomes. Both complexes protected plasmid DNA from DNase independent of complexation temperature. From the results, drug loading may affect not the complex formation of cationic liposomes and plasmid DNA, but the particle size of complex.

An electret filter is composed of permanently charged electret fibers and is widely used in applications requiring high collection efficiency and low-pressure drop. In this work, the collection efficiency of the filter media used in manufacturing cabin air filters was investigated by using poly-disperse particles when submicron particles were loaded. Long-term experiments were conducted by applying two different charging states, which were spray electrification and charge equilibrium by bipolar ionization. In order to investigate the effect of particle loading in filter media, NaCl particles were generated from 0.1% and 1% solutions by an atomizer. Liquid DOS particles were used to evaluate the effect of liquid particles on the collection efficiency of an electret filter. The results show significant effect of charge amount and size distribution of loading particles on the collection performance of a filter media in submicron region. Smaller particles loaded in electret fibers cause a more rapid degradation in collection efficiency and have lower minimum efficiency with time. The pressure drop of a filter media do rarely increase when the collection efficiency decreases to the minimum value. For the larger particles charged by spray electrification, which have charge amounts more than that of Boltzmann equilibrium charge distribution, the pressure drop of a filter media slowly increases in comparison with that of equilibrium charged particles. For DOS particles it is shown that the charging level of an electret filter severely decreases and the collection efficiency is below 10% in some particle size range.

Experimental research on characteristics of particle-laden jet by using a coaxial injector was conducted in order to design fuel and oxidizer injectors of the supercavitation underwater vehicle. $1{\mu}m$ and $42{\mu}m$ particles was simultaneously injected to obtain particle and fluid velocity. Small particles($1{\mu}m$) and large particles represent fluid and fuel characteristics respectively. Small particles, which was processed using PIV algorithms, and one for the large particles processed using PTV algorithms. Fluid phase axial velocity increases according to particle loading ratio increases, and particles are located at the outside of the high vorticity region in a mixing layer of a coaxial injector.
Ballast particles have an irregular shape and are discrete in nature. Due to the discrete nature of ballast, it exhibits complex mechanical behaviour under loading conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) can model the behaviour of discrete particles under a multitude of loading conditions. DEM is used in this paper to simulate a series of three-dimensional direct shear tests in order to investigate the shear behaviour of railway ballast and its interaction at the microscopic level. Particle flow code in three dimension (PFC3D) models the irregular shape of ballast particles as clump particles. To investigate the influence of particle size distribution (PSD), real PSD of Indian railway ballast specification IRS:GE:1:2004, China high-speed rail (HSR) and French rail specifications are generated. PFC3D built-in linear contact model is used to simulate the interaction of ballast particles under various normal stresses, shearing rate and shear box sizes. The results indicate how shear resistance and volumetric changes in ballast assembly are affected by normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and shear box size. In addition to macroscopic behaviour, DEM represents the microscopic behaviour of ballast particles in the form of particle displacement at different stages of the shearing process.

Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) laminates made of nano-particle-coated carbon fibers and damaged by a simulated lightning strike were tested under compression-after-impact(CAI) mode, during which the damage progress due to compressive loading has been monitored by acoustic emission(AE). The impact damage was induced not by mechanical loading but by a simulated lightning strike. Conductive nano-particles were coated directly on the fibers, from which CFRP coupons were made. The coupon were subjected to the strikes with a high voltage/current impulse of 10~40 kA within a few ${\mu}s$. The effects of nano-particle coating and the degree of damage induced by the simulated lightning strikes on AE activities were examined, and the relationship between the compressive residual strength and AE behavior has been evaluated in terms of AE event counts and the onset of AE activity with the compressive loading. The degree of impact damage was also measured in terms of damage area by using ultrasonic C-scan images. The assessment during the CAI tests of damaged CFRP showed that AE monitoring appeared to be useful to differentiate the degree of damage hence the mechanical integrity of composite structures damaged by lightning strikes.
Various bupivacaine-loaded microspheres were prepared using poly(d,1-lactide) (PLA) and poly(d,1-lactic-co-glycolide) (PLGA) by a solvent evaporation method for the sustained release of drug. The effects of process conditions such as drug loading, polymer type and solvent type on the characteristics of microspheres were investigated. The prepared microspheres were characterized for their drug loading, size distribution, surface morphology and release kinetics. Drug loading efficiency and yield of PLGA micro- spheres were higher than those of PLA microspheres. The prepared microspheres had an average particle size below 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The particle size range of microspheres was 1.65~2.24${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As a result of SEM, the particle size of PLA microspheres was smaller than that of PLGA microspheres. In morphology studies, microspheres showed a spherical shape and smooth surface in all process conditions. In thermal analysis, bupivacaine-loaded microspheres showed no peaks originating from bupivacaine. This suggested that bupivacaine base was molecular-dispersed in the polymer matrix of microspheres. The release pattern of the drug from microspheres was evaluated for 96 hours. The initial burst release of bupivacaine base decreased with increasing the molecular weight of PLGA, and the drug from microspheres released slowly. In conclusion, bupivacaine-loaded microspheres were successfully prepared from poly(d,1-lactide) and poly (d,1- lactic-co-glycolide) polymers with different molecular weights allowing control of the release rate.
