  • In the paper we investigate characteristics of a transitional behavior from a premixed flame to a triple flame in a lifted flame according to the change of equivalence ratio. In previous study, we showed that the stabilized laminar lifted flame regime is categorized by regimes of premixed flame, triple flame and critical flame. A gas-chromatograph is used to measure concentration field, a smoke-wire system is used to measure streak line, and a PIV system is used to measure velocity field in lifted flame. In the visualization experiment of smoke wire, the flow divergence and redirection reappeared in premixed flame as well as triple flame. Thus we cannot express the flame front of lifted flame has a behavior of triple flame with only flow divergence and redirection. In PIV measurement, flow velocity for those three flames has minimum value at the tip of flame front. To differentiate triple flame and premixed flame, $\Phi$ value of partially premixed fraction is employed. The partially premixed fraction $\Phi$ was constant in premixed flame. In critical flame small gradient appears over the whole regime. In triple flame, typical diffusion flame shape is obtained as parabolic distribution type due to diffusion flame trailing.

  • The potential of combustion treatment of low concentration VOC on a turbulent partially premixed flame has been studied experimentally. The significant decrease in hydrocarbon concentration from the low concentration VOC was observed with a turbulent partially premixed flame. The VOC/inert gas mixture whose fuel concentration is beyond the flammability limit could be treated in this method.

  • This study has investigated the relationship between heat release fluctuations and the flow perturbations in a partially premixed gas turbine combustor using a commercial CFD code. Special focus of the current work is placed on the effect of equivalence ratio on the flame dynamics in a partially-premixed system. As the first step for this combustion dynamics study in the non-perfectly premixed combustor, flame behaviors are modeled and then compared with measured results under both steady and unsteady conditions. The calculated results of the flame transfer function with equivalence ratio fluctuation are found to well capture the main qualitative characteristics of the combustion dynamics for the partially-premixed flames.

  • We have presented characteristics of a transitional behavior from a premixed flame to a triple flame in a lifted flame according to the change of equivalence ratio. The experimental apparatus consisted of a slot burner and a contraction nozzle for a lifted flame. As concentration difference of the both side of slot burner increases, the shape of flame changed from a premixed flame to a triple flame, and the liftoff height is decreased to the minimum value and then increase again. Around this minimum point, it is confirmed a transition regime from premixed flame to triple flame. Consequently, the experimental results of the liftoff height, flame curvature and luminescence intensity showed that the stabilized laminar lifted flame regime is categorized by regimes of premixed flame, triple flame and critical flame. In the visualization experiment of smoke wire, the flow divergence and redirection reappeared in premixed flame as well as triple flame. Thus we cannot express the flame front of lifted flame has a behavior of triple flame with only flow divergence and redirection. To differentiate triple flame and premixed flame, ${\Phi}$ value of partially premixed fraction is employed. The partially premixed fraction ${\Phi}$ was constant in premixed flame. • The lift-off characteristics of lifted laminar propane jet flames highly diluted with nitrogen are investigated introducing acoustic forcing with a fuel tube resonance frequency. A flame stability curve is obtained according to forcing strength and the nozzle exit velocity for N2 diluted flames. Flame lift-off behavior is globally classified into three regimes; 1) a weakly varying partially premixed behavior caused by a collapsible mixing for large forcing strength, 2) a coexistent behavior of the edge flame and a weakly varying partially premixed behavior for moderate forcing strength, and 3) edge flame or triple flame behavior for small forcing. It is shown that the laminar lifted flame with forcing affects flame lift-off behavior considerably, and is also clarified that the flame characteristic of flame base is well described with the penetration depth of the degree of mixing, ${\gamma}$$\_$$\delta$/. It is also confirmed that the weakly varying partially premixed flame caused by a collapsible mixing fur large forcing strength behaves as that just near flame blow-out in turbulent lift-off flame.

  • Adding small amounts of air to the fuel is used in many commercial combustors to avoid sooty flame. But partially premixed jet flame has lower blowout velocity, $u_{b.o}$, than nonpremixed one. Increasing blowout limit would be one of the key factors to develope highly intense compact combustion devices. Swirling flow enhances fuel and air mixing and induces a highly turbulent recirculation zone, which helps flame stabilization. It was known that NOx emission decreases with swirl on the proper range of swirl number. And it was shown that the flame interaction in multiple jets also increases $u_{b.o}$ owing to the internal recirculation and reduces NO emission. If the effects of swirl and flame interaction are combined together in partially premixed flame, both $u_{b.o}$ increasement and NOx emission reduction could be achieved. Blowout limits of partially premixed interacting propane flame in the swirling air coflow are investigated experimentally. The results show that the flame is not extinguished up to the experimental limits, 210 m/s, at the swirl number of 0.32 and $X_{F,o}$ = 0.46.

  • For the non-premixed interacting jet flames, it has been reported that if eight small nozzles are arranged along the circle of 40 $^{\sim}$ 72 times the diameter of single jet, the flames are not extinguished over 2oom/s. In this research, experiments were extended to the partially premixed cases to reduce both flame temperature and NOx emission. Nine nozzles were used- eight was evenly located along the perimeter of the imaginary circle and one at the geometric centre. The space between nozzles, S, the equivalence ratio, ${\Phi}$, the exit velocity and the role of the jet from the centre nozzle were considered. Normally, flame was lifted and flame base was located inside the imaginary circle made by the nozzle. As nozzles went away from each other, blowout velocity increased and then decreased. The maximum blowout velocity diminished with the addition of air to the fuel stream. When the fuel and/or oxidizer were not fed through the centre nozzle, the maximum blowout velocity obtained by varying Sand ${\Phi}$ was around 160m/s. Optimum nozzle separation distance at which peak blowout velocity obtained also decreased with ${\Phi}$ decrease. Flame base became leaner as approaching to the blowout. It seemed that lots of air was supplied to the flame stabilizing region by the entrainment and partially premixing. To approve this idea and to enhance the blowout velocity, fuel was supplied to the centre region. With the small amount of fuel through the centre nozzle, partially premixed flame could be sustained till sonic velocities. It seemed that the stabilizing mechanism in partially premixed interacting flame was different from that of non-premixed case because one was stabilized by the fuel supply through the centre nozzle but the other destabilized.

  • This study has numerically investigated the flame-acoustics interactions in the turbulent partially premixed flame field. In the present approach, in order to analyze the combustion instability, the present approach has employed the LES-based combustion model as well as the Helmholtz solver. Computations are made for the validation case of the partially premixed LIMOUSINE burner. In terms of the FFT data, numerical results are compared with experimental data. Moreover, Helmholtz equation in frequency domain is solved by combining CFD field data including the flight time from a nozzle to the flame zone. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussions are made for the essential features of the combustion instability encountered in the partially premixed burner.
