Oil-paper insulation of valve-side windings in converter transformers withstand electrical stresses combining with AC, DC and strong harmonic components. This paper presents the physical mechanisms and experimental researches on partial discharge (PD) of oil-paper insulation at pulsating DC voltage. Theoretical analysis showed that the phase-resolved distributions of PDs generated from different insulated models varied as the increase of the applied voltages following a certain rule. Four artificial insulation defect models were designed to generate PD signals at pulsating DC voltages. Theoretical statements and experimental results show that the PD pulses first appear at the maximum value of the applied pulsating DC voltage, and the resolved PD phase distribution became wider as the applied voltage increased. The PD phase-resolved distributions generated from the different discharge models are also different in the phase-resolved distributions and development progress. It implies that the theoretical analysis is suitable for interpretation of PD at pulsating DC voltage.
This paper proposes a novel pattern recognition approach based on the radial basis function (RBF) neural network for identifying insulation defects of high-voltage electrical apparatus arising from partial discharge (PD). Pattern recognition of PD is used for identifying defects causing the PD, such as internal discharge, external discharge, corona, etc. This information is vital for estimating the harmfulness of the discharge in the insulation. Since an insulation defect, such as one resulting from PD, would have a corresponding particular pattern, pattern recognition of PD is significant means to discriminate insulation conditions of high-voltage electrical apparatus. To verify the proposed approach, experiments were conducted to demonstrate the field-test PD pattern recognition of cast resin current transformer (CRCT) models. These tests used artificial defects created in order to produce the common PD activities of CRCTs by using feature vectors of field-test PD patterns. The significant features are extracted by using nonlinear principal component analysis (NLPCA) method. The experimental data are found to be in close agreement with the recognized data. The test results show that the proposed approach is efficient and reliable.

A variety of diagnostic tests are widely applied in the field in industry to evaluate the condition of high voltage (HV) motor stator insulation. In this paper, the influence of temperature on the stator insulation diagnostic tests such as the insulation resistance, AC current, dissipation factor, and partial discharge measurements are studied and reported. The tests are performed with the HV motor stator winding temperature set between $40^{\circ}C$ to $80^{\circ}C$ in $10^{\circ}C$ intervals. It is shown that the AC current, dissipation factor, and partial discharge magnitude steadily increase with temperature, which suggests that temperature must be taken into account in the interpretation of the test results.

The electrical insulating design is important to realize a HTS power cable because the cable is operated under the high voltage environment. For the insulation design of a HTS power cable, it is necessary to investigate the AC, impulse breakdown and partial discharge(PD) inception stress of liquid nitrogen/LPP composite insulation system. Based on these results, the electrical insulation of a HTS power cable is designed and Mini-model cables are manufactured. The manufactured Mini-model cables are evaluated that AC, impulse withstand voltage, breakdown and partial discharge inception stress and analyzed characteristics insulation of HTS cable bending condition according to this paper. From these tests, the AC, impulse withstand voltage test and partial discharge inception stress is satisfied "standard technical specification of KEPCO" in Korea and the breakdown voltage was 120kV.
Internal voids located within an insulation will arise partial discharge that causes local breakdown and even the entire insulation breakdown. For HV apparatuses, it is usual case that several voids are formed within non-uniform electric field condition rather than single void within uniform field, which can be solved analitically. The purpose of this work is to study partial discharge and breakdown characteristics of an insulation according to the distribution pattern of two disc-type voids that are located within non-uniform field. The results from numerical field analysis and experiments show that the electric field within the voids decreases as they are arranged more serially, which accordingly results in the increase of partial discharge inception field(PDIF) much higher than that of single void model. With parallel arranged voids, PDIF is almost the same as that of single void model. On the other hand, AC breakdown strength decreases as voids are arranged more serially, which is a natural result considering the reduction of effective insulation thickness. For parallel voids, this effect cannot he noticed where as they show different pattern compared with single void and serial void models in $\Phi$-Q-N analysis. Considering these results may leads us to the conclusion that, in the evaluation of insulating products through PD test, it is not sufficient to determine only PDIV or existence of PD at predetermined voltage level. We could evaluate more accurately by considering all the available data such as PDIV, PD magnitude, PD occurring phase, number of PD pulses, and etc.
In recent times, development of nanofluid insulation for power transformers is a hot research topic. Many researchers reported the enhancement in dielectric characteristics of nano modified mineral oils. Considering the drawbacks of petroleum based mineral oil, it is necessary to understand the dielectric characteristics of nanofluids developed with natural ester based oils. Palm oil has better insulation characteristics comparable to mineral oil. However very few research reports is available in the area of nanofluids based on palm oil. Partial discharge (PD) is one of the major sources of insulation performance degradation of transformer oil. It is essential to understand the partial discharge(PD) characteristics by collecting huge data base of PD performance of nano modified palm oil which will increase its confidence level for power transformer application. Knowing these facts, in the present work, certain laboratory experiments have been performed on PD characteristics of nano $SiO_2$ modified palm oil at different electrode configurations. Influence of concentration of nano filler material on the PD characteristics is also studied. Partial discharge inception voltage, Phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) pattern, PD signal time-frequency domain characteristics, PD signal equivalent timelength-bandwidth mapping, Weibull distribution statistical parameters of PRPD pattern, skewness, repetition rate and phase angle variations are evaluated at different test conditions. From the results of the experiments conducted, we came to understand that PD performance of palm oil is considerably enhanced with the addition of $nano-SiO_2$ filler at 0.01%wt and 0.05%wt concentration. Significant reduction in PD inception voltage, repetition rate, Weibull shape parameter and PD magnitude are noticed with addition of $SiO_2$ nanofillers in palm oil. These results will be useful for recommending nano modified palm oil for power transformer applications.

Insulation aging diagnosis system provides early warning regarding electrical equipment defects. Early warning is very important in that it can avoid great losses resulting from unexpected shutdown of the production line. Since relations of insulation aging and partial discharge dynamics are non-linear. it is very difficult to provide early warning in an electrical equipment. In this paper, we propose the design method of insulation aging diagnosis system that use a electromagnetic wave and acoustic signal to diagnose an electrical equipment. Proposed system measures the partial discharge on-line from DAS(Data Acquisition System and acquires 2D patterns from analyzing it. For filtering the noise contained in sensor signals we used ICA algorithms. Using this data, we design of the neuro-fuzzy model that diagnoses an electrical equipment and is investigated in this paper. Validity of the new method is asserted by numerical simulation.
A 154kV class high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable system is developing in Korea. For insulation design of this cable, it is important that study on cryogenic electrical insulation design to develop the cold dielectric type HTS cable because the cable is operated under the high voltage environment in cryogenic temperature. Therefore, this paper describes a design method for the electrical insulation layer of the cold dielectric type HTS cable adopting the partial discharge-free design under ac stress, based on the experimental results such a ac breakdown strength, partial discharge inception stress, $V_{ac}$-t characteristics, $V_{imp}$-n characteristics, and impulse breakdown strength of liquid nitrogen/laminated polypropylene paper (LPP) composite insulation system in which the mini-model cable is immersed into pressurized liquid nitrogen.

The partial discharge has been blown as the chief breakdown of power equipments. The analysis and the recognition is much difficult because the partial discharge signal is very small and has complex aging pattern. Recently, insulation aging diagnosis based on pattern of phase(Ф), partial discharge magnitude(q), number(n) has been very important. Owing to depreciate the reappearance of aging progress at the electrical tree pattern and to be difficult to analyze visually, the study on partial discharge pattern is suggested to normalizing analysis method of partial discharge signals. This parer is purposed on prediction of life-time measurement of cv-cable, on decision of risk degree with normalization and real-time measurement of partial discharge signals for aging diagnosis of cv-cable. As normalizing the aging signals of electrical tree in cv-cable, it is able to confirm risk degree of insulation material with the distribution of Ф-q-n and recognize the process of aging pattern using neural network.

This paper presents the characteristics of partial discharge and radiated electromagnetic waves in the existence of a poor contact for the insulation diagnosis of eco-friendly power equipment. AC surface discharge experiment was conducted to simulate the poor contact between a hive voltage electrode (anode) and a solid insulator in $N_2/O_2$ mixture gas under a non-uniform field. The partial discharge voltage to be measured at 0.3MPa increased with the increase of the poor contact gap and was saturated with the gap. In addition to the partial discharge characteristics, it was verified that the defect of the poor contact can be diagnosed using the radiated electromagnetic waves due to the partial discharge, which measured by a biconical EMC antenna and a spectrum analyzer.
