This study designed a new type of loop antenna that is able to detect partial discharges based on microstrip line technology. In the diagnosis of power cables, partial discharge signals are generally produced at a frequency range less than 100MHz because high frequency PD signals are lost along a propagation path in such cables. The new type of loop antenna sensor has been studied using simulation software known as CST microwave studio version 5.0. In partial discharge measurement experiments, a commercial HFCT sensor was used as a reference sensor. Several experiments were made over HFCT and loop antenna sensors for detecting partial discharges on 22.9kV MV XLPE cable. In this study, we showed the loop antenna designed in this study that can be applied as a commercial HFCT sensor.
In this thesis, the partial discharge according to applied voltage and variations of cross-sectional area and length of the conductor related to general condition for using cable was measured in order to study degradation diagnosis for 2-Core cable of the PVC insulator used in industrial fields for other safety installations. Also the thermal degradation conditions under various installation circumstances of cables were studied by assuming degradation conditions with each different degradation rate (50%, 67%, 100%) such as variation in degradated temperature, thermal exposure time, normal state, partially degradated state and overall degradated state for thermal degradation diagnosis. The quantity of electric discharge (V-Q) according to applied voltage was measured for measurement of inception voltage and extinction voltage. The quantity of electric discharge and the number of electric discharge (Q-N) were measured with applied voltage kept constantly. In addition, pictures were taken using SEM (scanning electron microscope) to compare the surface of external insulator to degradated state of internal insulator according to thermal degradation temperature and also compare the surface of external insulator to degradated surface state of internal insulator according exposure time of cables to thermal stress.
Generally, it is known that many partial discharges are occurred in one voltage cycle. In this case, it is not easy to distinguish between ultrasonic signals caused by the partial discharge. We describes a pattern of the ultrasonic signal by the partial discharge in transformer. The test setup for ultrasonic signal measurement was to simulate a internal partial discharge by using a needle to plane electrodes. We compared the number of partial discharge and ultrasonic signal in one voltage cycle. The results showed that it was possible to distinguish between ultrasonic signals by analysing partial discharge detection method and ultrasonic signal on time domain.
The partial discharge testing is widely used in diagnostic measuring technology because it gives low stress to power equipment which is undertaken tests. Therefore it is very useful method compare to previous destructive methods and effective diagnosis method in power system that requires on-line/on-site diagnosis. But partial discharges have very complex characteristics of discharge pattern, so it is required continuous research to development of precise analysis method. In recent, the study of partial discharge is carrying out discover of initial defect of power equipment through condition diagnosis and system development of degradation diagnosis using HFPD(High Frequency Partial Discharge) detection. In this study, simulated system is manufactured and HFPD occurred from those simulator is measured with broad-band antenna in real time, the degradation grade of system is analyzed through produced patterns in simulated target according to the AI/statistics processing.
A growing number of gas-insulated transformers in underground power substations in urban areas are approaching 20 years of operation, the time when failures begin to occur. It is thus essential to prevent failure through accurate condition diagnosis of the given facility. Various solid insulation materials exist inside of the transformers, and the generated decomposition gas may differ for each gas-insulated equipment. In this study, a simulation system was designed to analyze the deterioration characteristics of SF6 decomposition gas and insulation materials under the conditions of partial discharge and thermal fault for diagnosis of gas-insulated transformers. Degradation characteristics of the insulation materials was determined using an automatic viscometer and FT-IR. The analysis results showed that the pattern of decomposition gas generation under partial discharge and thermal fault was different. In particular, acetaldehyde was detected under a thermal fault in all types of insulation, but not under partial discharge or an arc condition. In addition, in the case of insulation materials, deterioration of the insulation itself rapidly progressed as the experimental temperature increased. It was confirmed that it was possible to diagnose the internal discharge or thermal fault occurrence of the transformer through the ratio and type of decomposition gas generated in the gas-insulated transformer.
This paper presents compact low frequency ultra-wide band (UWB) sensor design and study of the partial discharge diagnosis by sensing electromagnetic pulse emitted from the partial discharge source with the newly designed UWB sensor. In this study, we designed a new type of compact low frequency UWB sensor based on microstrip antenna technology to detect both the low frequency and high frequency band of the partial discharge signal. Experiments of offline PD testing on medium voltage (22.9kV) underground cable mention the comparative results with the traditional HFCT as a reference sensor in the laboratory. In the series of comparative tests, the calibration signal injection test provided with the conventional IEC 60270 method and high voltage injection testing are included.
High voltage induction motors are widely used in industrial factory because have many benefits. But the insulated materials of induction motor are aged by using time, electrical, thermal, circumstantial stresses and so on. Motor failures are occurred by these deterioration phenomena and give rise economic problems to user. In many motor failures, insulated material problems of stator winding happen frequently and occupy high percentages in the failure source. In this paper, the testing specimen(motorette) is manufactured by modeling of stator winding of high voltage induction motor and accelerating test is carried out. Partial discharge signals detected by RF sensor are used to analyze deterioration condition of stator windings. According to aging time, the 3D ( ${\Phi}$-Q-N) distribution and skewness of partial discharge signals are changed.
This paper offer fundamental materials about Partial Discharge(PD) detection by electromagnetic waves. All spectrum data-usually used as grape- can be used as numbers. And then the average of background noise spectrum strength was made. Average value subtract from every data. Then average value appeared, graphed. The graph was compared with the magnitude of charge. The shape of changes is similar, and the change of electric field strength could be seen in one sight. When the magnitude of charge is over than 100[pC], antenna can detect partial discharge. So this method will be very useful to diagnosis of insulation. It the performance of the antenna used in this experiment is analyzed, good results can be obtained.
Analysis of the partial discharge signal, a technique to diagnose the stator winding insulation is a key function for the diagnosis of high voltage rotating machines and requires high precision. To satisfy this requirement, various denoising techniques such as filtering and differential methods were proposed. However, these techniques can not eliminate a adjacent induction noise that decreases reliability of the diagnosis. A simple novel denoising algorithm, therefore, is proposed for removing the adjacent induction noise in this paper. The algorithm shows good performance in the real partial discharge signals measured by 13kV class capacitive couplers installed at hydro-generator in Dae-cheong Dam.
In this paper, we purpose automatic diagnosis in online, as the fundamental study to diagnose the partial discharge mechanism and to predict the lifetime, by introduction a neural network. In the proposed method, Ire use acoustic emission sensing system and calculate a fixed quantity statistic operator by pulse number and amplitude. Using statically operators such as the center of gravity(G) and the gradient of the discharge distribute(C), we analyzed the early stage and the middle stage. the fixed quantity statistic operators are learned by a neural network. The diagnosis of insulation degradation and a lifetime prediction by the early stage time are achieved. On the basis of revealed excellent diagnosis ability through the neural network learning for the patterns during degradation, it was proved that the neural network is appropriate for degradation diagnosis and lifetime prediction in partial discharge.
