  • In recent years the recording density of hard disk has been increasing largely due to the decreasing flying height of head. However, as the flying height is decreased the reliability issue becomes ever more critical. This is because the reliability and durability of hard disk is related to the head/disk interaction as the two components come into partial or full contact. In this work characteristics of friction and stiction in head/disk interface was investigated using constant speed drag test and CSS(contact-start-stop) test. Development of Metallic Bipolar Plate Material with W-addition in Austenitic Stainless Steel for PEMFC Environment

  • Austenitic stainless steels with addition of various amounts of Mo and W were evaluated in terms of corrosion and contact resistance to determine optimum alloy composition of metallic bipolar plate for PEMFC. The corrosion property was evaluated by both acid fume exposure test at $130^{\circ}C$ and by electrochemical polarization tests in $H_3PO_4$ solution at $80^{\circ}C$. Austenitic stainless steel with proper amount of Mo and W demonstrated not only good corrosion resistance but also low contact resistance. Analyses on the passive film show that partial substitution of Mo by W enhances passive film stability and repassivation property. Test results suggest that austenitic stainless steel with 2 wt%Mo and 4 wt%W has optimum composition for metallic bipolar plate used in PEMFC.

Application of superficial keratectomy and soft contact lens for the treatment of symblepharon in a cat: a case report

  • A 7-month-old intact female Persian cat was diagnosed with symblepharon accompanied by epiphora, brownish ocular discharge, and ocular discomfort in the left eye. Superficial keratectomy (SK) was performed to remove adhesions between the conjunctiva and cornea. To prevent re-adhesion after SK, the detached conjunctival tissue was sutured to the corneal limbus, and a soft contact lens (SCL) was inserted and a partial temporary tarsorrhaphy was performed. The SCL and tarsorrhaphy sutures were maintained for 22 days, and symblepharon did not recur 347 days postoperatively. SK combined with SCL is a relatively easy and cost-effective surgical option for feline symblepharon.

라운딩 펀치에 의한 프레팅 상태에서의 균열 해석 (Crack Analysis under Fretting Condition by Rounded Punch)

  • Surface edge crack subjected to contact stresses is analysed. A punch with corner radii is considered to press the semi-infinite plane. Partial slip problem is solved when a shear force is applied to the punch. Dislocation density function method is used to solve the present mixed mode crack problem. The crack length of positive K1 is examined, which is affected by the ratio of the flat portion to the total width of the punch. Surface traction during one cycle of the shear force is evaluated to simulate the fretting condition. The compliance change of the contact surface is also investigated during the shear cycle. It is found that the crack grows during only a part of the cycle, which may be termed as effective period of crack growing. A design method for restraining the fretting failure is discussed, from which recommendable geometry of the punch is suggested.

압축잔류응력장을 전파하는 피로균열의 개구거동의 유한요소법을 이용한 해석적 검토 (An Analysis of the Fatigue Crack Opening Behaviour in the Welding Residual Stress Field by the Finite Element Method)

  • The finite element analysis was performed for the cracks existing in residual stress fields in order to investigate the effects of configuration of residual stress distribution to the fatigue crack opening behaviour. And the variation of stress distributions adjacent to the crack caused by uploading was examined. The finite element model with contact elements for the crack plane and plane stress elements for the base material and the analytical method based on the superposition principle to estimate crack opening behaviour and the stress distribution adjacent to the crack subjected to uploading were used. The results of the analysis showed that crack opening behaviors and variations of stress distribution caused by uploading were changed depending on the configuration of residual stress distribution. When the crack existed in the region of compressive residual stress and the configuration of compressive residual stress distribution were inclined, a partial crack opening just behind of a crack tip occurred during uploading. Based on the above results, it was clarified that the crack opening behaviour in the residual stress field could be predicted accurately by the finite element analysis using these analytical method and model.

  • In this study, We have discussed the development of a diagnostic device to detect and prevent electrical fire due to the arc caused by contact failure and partial disconnection at the connection part of the three-phase electric heater wiring used in the industrial field. The arc caused by contact failure and partial disconnection at the connection part of the electric heater shows a change in the current effective value. Therefore, it is possible to determine whether there exists a defect by analyzing the current unbalance factor and the number of current fluctuations with the diagnostic apparatus. The three-phase unbalanced heater is considered to be capable of determining defects through periodic measurement and trend analysis of the current unbalance factor. It is also expected that this device can be used not only for electric heaters but also for detection of defects in wiring and connections of electrical equipment having a characteristic of constant load current.

  • GIS is a typical power equipment with higher reliability. It is compact and safe because all the energized parts are enclosed by a sealed cylindrical tank which is filled with $SF_6$. Generally gas insulated power equipments like GIS are designed to have sufficient electrical strength to prevent partial discharges under normal operating condition. Despite of the careful processes in manufacturing, transporting and assembling, voids or particles can be created, resulting in partial discharges at electrically weak points. The key factors causing partial discharges in GIS are; particles, voids in solid insulation, protrusions, poor contact of metal components, etc. The particle can be attached on; spacers, electrodes, internal wall of the GIS tank. It also moves in GIS freely. Most of partial discharges are likely to occur when particles are attached to spacers. In this paper, the electrical characteristics of a surface discharge were investigated under various conditions by using simulation program of FEMLAB.

Numerical study on the deflections of steel-concrete composite beams with partial interaction

  • The use of composite beams with partial interaction, with less shear connectors than those required for full interaction, may be advantageous in many situations. However, these beams tend to show higher deflections compared to beams with full interaction, and codified expressions for the calculation of such deflections are not fully developed and validated. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive numerical study on the deflections of steel-concrete composite beams with partial interaction. Efficient numerical models of full-scale composite beams considering material nonlinearities and contact between their parts have been developed by means of the advanced software ABAQUS, including a damage model to simulate the concrete slab. The FE models were validated against experimental results, and subsequently parametric studies were developed to investigate the influence of the shear connection degree and the coefficient of friction in the deflection of composite beams. The comparison of predicted deflections using reference codes (AISC, Eurocode-4 and AS-2327.1) against numerical results showed that there are still inaccuracies in the estimation of deflections for the verification of the serviceability limit state, according to some of the analyzed codes.

  • 모든 과개교합을 가진 환자를 병적인 상태로 판단할 수는 없지만 전치부에 교합접촉이 불안정하거나, 전반적인 교합 부조화가 동반된다면 과개교합은 하악 전치에 대한 지속적인 마모와 정출을 일으킬 수 있다. 이 증례는 72세 남성환자로 상악과 하악의 전치가 잔존해 있지만 골격성 2급 부정교합으로 인하여 안정위 상태에서 교합접촉이 불가능하고 교합지지가 완전히 상실되어 수직고경의 증가가 필요한 환자였다. 이 증례는 보철 수복을 위해 수직고경의 증가가 필요한 경우로 수평피개를 더욱 심화시켜 교합의 부조화를 유발할 수 있기에 정밀한 진단을 통한 수직고경 증가량 결정이 필요하였다. 이 증례에서는 Dahl concept를 응용한 가철성 국소의치 보철물을 이용하여 안정적인 교합을 완성하였으며 적절한 치료 결과를 보였기에 이를 보고하고자 한다.

Comparative evaluation of peri-implant stress distribution in implant protected occlusion and cuspally loaded occlusion on a 3 unit implant supported fixed partial denture: A 3D finite element analysis study

  • Purpose. To assess peri-implant stress distribution using finite element analysis in implant supported fixed partial denture with occlusal schemes of cuspally loaded occlusion and implant protected occlusion. Materials and methods. A 3-D finite element model of mandible with D2 bone with partially edentulism with unilateral distal extension was made. Two Ti alloy identical implants with 4.2 mm diameter and 10 mm length were placed in the mandibular second premolar and the mandibular second molar region and prosthesis was given with the mandibular first molar pontic. Vertical load of 100 N and and oblique load of 70 N was applied on occlusal surface of prosthesis. Group 1 was cuspally loaded occlusion with total 8 contact points and Group 2 was implant protected occlusion with 3 contact points. Results. In Group 1 for vertical load, maximum stress was generated over implant having 14.3552 Mpa. While for oblique load, overall stress generated was 28.0732 Mpa. In Group 2 for vertical load, maximum stress was generated over crown and overall stress was 16.7682 Mpa. But for oblique load, crown stress and overall stress was maximum 22.7561 Mpa. When Group 1 is compared to Group 2, harmful oblique load caused maximum overall stress 28.0732 Mpa in Group 1. Conclusion. In Group 1, vertical load generated high implant stress, and oblique load generated high overall stresses, cortical stresses and crown stresses compared to vertical load. In Group 2, oblique load generated more overall stresses, cortical stresses, and crown stresses compared to vertical load. Implant protected occlusion generated lesser harmful oblique implant, crown, bone and overall stresses compared to cuspally loaded occlusion.
