  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the resistance conditions on the electromyography (EMG) activity ratio of vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle during partial lunge exercise in healthy subjects in order to suggest the basic data of exercise intervention for such as patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Methods: The participants of this study were healthy twenty two people with no knee pain, limitation of motion and past history of operation at lower extremity. The participants performed three types of lunge 1) no resistance, 2) anterolateral 45° resistance and 3) lateral 90° respectively. The EMG activity of the VMO and VL were recorded by surface EMG and the measured data normalized by the %MVIC value was analyzed by repeated measured ANOVA. Results: The results showed that the VMO/VL EMG activity ratio during lunge with anterolateral 45° resistance was significantly higher than with no resistance and lateral 90° resistance (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in VMO, VL, and VMO/VL muscle activity between male and female subjects (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that partial lunge exercise with anterolateral 45° resistance can increase the VMO/VL muscle activity in healthy subjects. This result could be used as basic data to develop therapeutic exercise programs such as PFPS patients.

  • Unlike photovoltaic systems installed on land, photovoltaic systems applied to the offshore plant have the characteristic that is installed in a limited space. For single point mooring plant, it is advantageous in terms of a reliable power supply to be installed in different directions of photovoltaic panels, because it is not possible to identify the position of the sun by rotation of the plant itself. Differences of installation angle between photovoltaic panels make a difference of the intensity of radiation irradiated on each photovoltaic panel, and it brings loss of generation quantity due to the partial shading. In order to provide a photovoltaic system suitable for offshore plant, the modeling which contains multiple photovoltaic panels controlled by single controller is performed. Then, it was examined how the output characteristics of the photovoltaic system change about the difference of the intensity of radiation that varies depending on the altitude of the sun. Finally, through the simulation, a development model of the photovoltaic system which is suitable for offshore plant is suggested.

  • NiO-doped $WO_3$ thick films were prepared by a screen printing technique. The electrical property and microstructure of the films were investigated with the partial pressure of oxygen and the amount of NiO. The grain size of NiO-doped $WO_3$ was smaller than that of undoped $WO_3$, but the grain size of 0.1, 1, 10 mol% NiO-doped $WO_3$ were nearly the same. The electrical conductance of the $WO_3$ thick films decreased with the oxygen partial pressure, and increased with the amount of NiO to the limit of solid solution. The variation of the electrical conductance with temperature is not so large in the extrinsic region, but it changed rapidly in the intrinsic region. The conductance decreased with adsorption of oxygen in the intermediate range between the extrinsic and intrinsic region.

  • We investigate the effects on performance of using a partial retransmission mechanism in Optical Burst Switched(OBS) networks. In our scheme, the lost segments of a burst are retransmitted in the OBS layer. We also propose an optical resource reservation using the partial retransmission mechanism. Our scheme attempts to improve the burst contention resolution and optical channel utilization. The performance of the proposed mechanism is analyzed by NS2 simulations. Simulation results indicate that link utilization of the OBS network is improved makedly at the expense of signaling and ingress buffers.

  • According to weight lightning trend of automobile body, necessity of resistance spot welding (RSW) of Mg alloy on automobile industry is increasing rapidly because of the highest specific strength among commercial metals. Mg alloy has low electric resistance and high thermal conductivity like as Al alloy, so that needs applying high current in short time when welding. Thick oxide film of Mg alloy pollutes the electrodes and makes partial current carrying paths when on welding. Partial current carrying paths signify excessive concentration of current. There can initiate expulsion easily and reduces electrode life rapidly. Generating partial current carrying paths and expulsions are influenced by shapes of electrode. Therefore, electrode life also influenced by shape. In this study, we perform life test of RSW electrode of radius type. Measure tensile shear load and nugget size every spot alternately. As a result, radius type electrode can extend life over twice as dome type electrode.

  • Single-phase convection and partial nucleate boiling in free-surface and submerged jet impingements of subcooled water ejected through a 2-mm-diameter circular pipe nozzle were investigated by local measurements. Effects of jet velocity and nozzle-to-imping-ing surface distance as well as heat flux on distributions of wall temperature and heat transfer coefficients were considered. Incipience of boiling began from far downstream in contrast with the cases of the planar water jets of high Reynolds numbers. Heat flux increase and velocity decrease reduced the temperature difference between stagnation and far downstream regions with the increasing influence of boiling in partial boiling regime. The chance in nozzle-to-impinging surface distance from H/d=1 to 12 had a significant effect on heat transfer around the stagnation point of the submerged jet, but not for the free-surface jet. The submerged jet provided the lower cooling performance than the free-surface jet due to the entrainment of the pool fluid of which temperature increased.

  • Thyrotomy is very useful surgical procedure for laryngeal lesions; however, the web-formation at the anterior part of vocal cords is a frequent troublesome sequel of this procedure. Since the anterior commissure is not injured in Hayashi's hemithyrotomy, a web never results from this procedure. But the intralaryngeal exposure is too small to perform the surgery in this method. Partial thyrotomy was deviced as a new surgical technique to the glottic subglottic lesion. In partial thyrotomy, surgical procedure can be easily carried out under local anesthesia, in a wide field. This procedure has no side effects such as the web-formation at the anterior commissure, nor dyspnea after the surgery.

  • The performance of a photovoltaic array is affected by temperature, solar insolation, partial shading effect, and array configuration. Maximum power point tracking(MPPT) techniques are employed in photovoltaic systems to make full utilization of the PV array output power which depends on solar irradiation and ambient temperature. As much as MPPT is important in photovoltaic systems, many MPPT techniques have been developed. In this paper, several major existing MPPT methods are comparatively analyzed and novel hybrid MPPT algorithm is proposed. The proposed hybrid MPPT algorithm is developed in combination with traditional MPPT methods to complement each other for improving performance and mitigating partial shading effects. The proposed algorithm is implemented and validated using MATLAB/Simulink simulation tool.

  • Korean rivers and their surrounding environments have been used excessively for rice production in the past and more recently for construction of urban areas to accomodate the rapidly increasing population. Affected Korean rivers experience dramatic fluctuations in their water levels and have faster currents compared with those in other countries. In order to restore more natural conditions in rivers experiencing such conditions, we employed a partial restoration method, which is designed to achieve physical and biological stability simultaneously. Concrete blocks were introduced to increase the river's physical stability during floods, and terra cottem, a soil enhancer, was used to reduce water loss due to intense heat. These interventions increased the river's ability to hold water and thereby promoted plant growth. This restoration method increased vegetation coverage and species diversity in treated areas, and changed the species composition in treated areas to more closely approximate that of the control site. These results suggest that this method is effective in restoring damaged habitats to more natural conditions.

  • Electrostatic Discharge(ESD) protection performance of PPS(PMOS pass structure) embedded N-type silicon controlled rectifier(NSCR_PPS) device with different partial p-well(PPW) structure was discussed for high voltage I/O applications. A conventional NSCR_PPS standard device shows typical SCR-like characteristics with low on-resistance, low snapback holding voltage and low thermal breakdown voltage, which may cause latch-up problem during normal operation. However, our proposed NSCR_PPS devices with modified PPW demonstrate the stable ESD protection performance with high latch-up immunity.
