Laidback fan shaped film-cooling hole is formulated numerically and optimized with the help of three-dimensional numerical analysis, surrogate methods, and the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by four geometric design variables, the injection angle of the hole, the lateral expansion angle of the diffuser, the forward expansion angle of the hole, and the ratio of the length to the diameter of the hole, to maximize the film-cooling effectiveness compromising with the aerodynamic loss. The objective function values are numerically evaluated through Reynolds- averaged Navier-Stokes analysis at the designs that are selected through the Latin hypercube sampling method. Using these numerical simulation results, the Response Surface Approximation model are constructed for each objective function and a hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is applied to obtain the Pareto optimal front. The clustered points from Pareto optimal front were evaluated by flow analysis. These designs give enhanced objective function values in comparison with the experimental designs.

In this study, a review is made of the previous work(Ref. 1 and 5) for the development of the limit design method of the flat rectangular grillages under the lateral pressure. And the effect of the in-plane loads on the collapse theory is considered. The main part of the work is devoted in developing the standard design method of grillages under the criteria of minimum weight and minimum cost. In the final part, it was shown that Pareto solution methods can be easily applied to structural optimization with the multiple objectives, and the designer can have an appropriate choice from those Pareto optimal solutions.

In recent years, heat source systems which have a principal effect on the performance of buildings are difficult to design optimally as a great number of design factors and constraints in large and complicated buildings need to be considered. On the other hand, it is necessary to design an optimum system combination and operation planning for energy efficiency considering Life Cycle Cost (LCC). This study suggests a multi-level and multi-objective optimization method to minimize both LCC and investment cost using a genetic algorithm targeting an office building which requires a large cooling load. The optimum method uses a two stage process to derive the system combination and the operation schedule by utilizing the input data of cooling and heating load profile and system performance characteristics calculated by dynamic energy simulation. The results were assessed by Pareto analysis and a number of Pareto optimal solutions were determined. Moreover, it was confirmed that the derived operation schedule was useful for operating the heat source systems efficiently against the building energy requirements. Consequently, the proposed optimization method is determined by a valid way if the design process is difficult to optimize.
Unlike the traditional displacement type vessels, the high speed planing crafts are supported by the lift forces which are highly non-linear. This non-linear phenomenon causes their motions in an irregular seaway to be non-Gaussian. In general, it may not be possible to express the probability distribution of such processes by an analytical formula. Also the process might not be stationary or ergodic in which case the statistical behavior of the motion to be constantly changing with time. Therefore the extreme values of such a process can no longer be calculated using the analytical formulae applicable to Gaussian processes. Since closed form analytical solutions do not exist, recourse is taken to fitting a distribution to the data and estimating the statistical properties of the process from this fitted probability distribution. The peaks over threshold analysis and fitting of the Generalized Pareto Distribution are explored in this paper as an alternative to Weibull, Generalized Gamma and Rayleigh distributions in predicting the short term extreme value of a random process.
This paper proposes shape design of frame structures for vibration suppression and weight reduction. The $H_{\infty}$ norm of the transfer function from disturbance sources to the output points where vibration should be suppressed, is adopted as the performance index to represent the magnitude of vibration transfer. The design parameters are the node positions of the frame structure, on which constraints are imposed so that the structure achieves given tasks. For computation of Pareto optimal solutions to the two-objective design problem, a number of linear combinations of the $H_{\infty}$ norm and the total weight of the structure are considered and minimized. For minimization of the scalared objective function, a Lagrange function is defined by the objective function and the imposed constraints on the design parameters. The solution for which the Lagrange function satisfies the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition, is searched by the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.
Optimization using a hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm coupled with response surface approximation has been performed to improve the performance of a transonic axial compressor with circumferential casing grooves. In order to optimize the operating stability and peak adiabatic efficiency of the compressor with circumferential casing grooves, tip clearance, angle distribution at blade tip and the depth of the circumferential casing grooves are selected as design variables. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations. The trade-off between two objectives with the interaction of blade and casing treatment is determined and discussed with respect to the representative clusters in the Pareto-optimal solutions compared to the axial compressor without the casing treatment.

The aim of this research is to develop the Bees Algorithm named 'the dynamic allocated Bees Algorithm' for multi-objective problem, especially in order to be suit for Pareto optimality. In addition two new neighbourhood search methods have been developed to produce enhanced solutions for a multi-objective problem named 'random selection neighbourhood search' and 'weighted sum neighbourhood search' and they were compared with the basic neighbourhood search in the dynamic allocated Bees Algorithm. They were successfully applied to an Environmental/Economic (electric power) dispatch (EED) problem and simulation results presented for the standard IEEE 30-bus system and they were compared to those obtained using other approaches. The comparison shows the superiority of the proposed dynamic allocated Bees Algorithms and confirms its suitability for solving the multi-objective EED problem.
In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink with vortex generator for thermal stability is conducted numerically. To acquire the optimal design variables, the CFD and mathematical optimization are integrated. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method. The optimization is carried out by means of the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. The results show that when the temperature rise is less than 40 K, the optimal design variables are as follows; $B_1=2.584mm$, $B_2=1.741mm$, and t = 7.914 mm. Comparing with the initial design, the temperature rise is reduced by 4.2 K, while the pressure drop is increased by 9.43 Pa. The Pareto optimal solutions are also presented between the pressure drop and the temperature rise.

This paper proposed a multi-objective optimization method for building energy system design using primary energy consumption and initial cost. The designing of building energy systems is a complex task, because life cycle cost and efficiency of building are determined by decisions of engineer during the early stage of design. Therefore, methods such as pareto analysis that can generate various alternatives for decision making are necessary. In this study, the optimization is performed using the NSGAII and case study was carried out for feasibility of the proposed method. As a result, alternative solutions can be obtained for the optimal building energy system design.

This paper proposes a new optimization algorithm named by GBNSGA(Goal-Pareto Based Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm) which determines the best configuration for CR(Cognitive Radio) communication systems. Conventionally, in order to select the proper radio configuration, genetic algorithm has been introduced so as to alleviate computational burden along the execution of the cognition cycle proposed by Mitola. This paper proposes a novel optimization algorithm designated as GBNSGA for cognitive engine which can be described as a hybrid algorithm combining well-known Pareto-based NSGA(Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm) as well as GP(Goal Programming). By conducting computer simulations, it will be verified that the proposed method not only satisfies the user's service requirements in the form of goals. It reveals the fast optimization capability and more various solutions rather than conventional NSGA or weighted-sum approach.
