  • The grandmother role may be an important support network for dual-earner families and become more saliency among those children who are living with their grandmothers than those who are not. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of family structure characteristics on children's solidarity with their grandmothers and grandmothers' effects on grandchildren's self-esteem. Questionnaire data were collected from 429 grandchildren in the fifth and sixth grades. The major findings showed that (1)Solidarity between grandmother and grandchild in dual-earner families was associated with living arrangement. (2)Children's self-esteem in dual-earner families was not related to living arrangements with their grandmother. (3)Factors predicting solidarity between grandmother and grandchild and the grandchild's self-esteem differed by living arrangement. Solidarity between grandmother and grandchild was explained by grandmother-mother relationships, health of grandmother, parent-children relationship and occupational status of father for children living with their grandmothers. For those children not living with their grandmothers, grandmother-mother relationship, the educational level of father, families' economic level, parent-child relationship and health of the grandmother were significant predictors of grandmother-grandchild solidarity. (4)The regression of predictor variables on self-esteem for children living with grandmother revealed that grandmother-grandchild solidarity was the most powerful predictor, followed by occupational status of father, the educational level of mother, economic status of the family and parent-child relationship. For those children who were not living with grandmothers, parent-child relationship, economic status of the family, grandmother-grandchild solidarity and the educational level of the mother were also significant factors in that order.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship mother-adolescent communication and adolescents' alienation in both single mother-headed family and two-parent family. The subjects were 548 middle and high school students who were 82 single mother-headed family's adolescents and 466 two-parent family's adolescents in Keoungbok. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, t-test, standard multiple- and hierarchical multiple regression(using SPSS 12.1). Major findings were as follows: (1) The single mother-headed family's adolescents were perceived less positive mother-adolescent communication and higher alienation than two-parent family's adolescents. (2) The adolescents' alienation was associated with mother-adolescent communication in both single mother-headed and two-parent family. The less positive parent-adolescent communication, the higher adolescents' alienation. (3) The family structure(single mother-headed or two-parent) was a significant predictor of adolescents' alienation. But when the effect of mother-adolescent communication was controlled, the effect of the family structure became non-significant.

  • A XML Document has a structure which may be irregular The irregular document structure is difficult for users to know exactly. In this paper, we propose the XML document model and the structure retrieval method for efficient management and structure retrieval of XML documents. So we use fixed-sized LETID having the information of element, describe the structured information retrieval algorithm for parent and child element to represent the structured information of XML documents. Using this method, we represent the structured information of XML document efficiently. We can directly access to specific clement by simple operation, and process various queries. We expect the method to support various structured retrieval of specific element such as parent, child. and sibling elements.

  • Existing indexing mechanisms of XML data using numbering scheme have a drawback of rebuilding the entire index structure when insertion, deletion, and update occurs on the data. We propose a new indexing mechanism based on split blocks to cope with this problem. The XML data are split into blocks, where there exists at most a relationship between two blocks, and numbering scheme is applied to each block. This mechanism reduces the overhead of rebuilding index structures when insertion, deletion, and update occurs on the data. We also propose two algorithms, Parent-Child Block Merge Algorithm and Ancestor-Descendent Algorithm which retrieve the relationship between two entities in the XML hierarchy using this indexing mechanism. We also propose a mechanism in which the identifier of a block has the information of its Parents' block to expedite retrieval process of the ancestor-descendent relationship and also propose two algorithms. Parent-Child Block Merge Algorithm and Ancestor-Descendent Algorithm using this indexing mechanism.

  • Objective: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the change of mother-child interaction and perceptions of parenting and play after participating in parent counseling education program which is combined physical contact play activities with client-centered counseling technique. Methods: The subjects were 6 mothers and their child who attended more than 7 out of 8 times in the program, which carried out totally 8 sessions, once a week for 90 minutes. Marschak Interaction Method (MIM) and semi-structured questionnaire about parenting and play were used to assess the change. Results: First, mothers' interaction with their child was become more nurturable and mutual engaged, and facilitated their child's challenge simultaneously providing structure. Second, child-directed interaction was increased rather than mother-directed, and the waiting time for their child's attempt became longer. Conclusion/Implications: The parent counseling education program changed the mother-child interaction more positively. This study has the implication in terms of combining play with education and counseling, but there is the limitation of generalization due to qualitative analysis based on limited cases.

  • In this paper. a new wavelet packet image coder is proposed for images that include many high-frequency components using the relation between subbands. The new algorithm presents parent-child relationship for reducing image reconstruction error using relations between individual frequency subbands. By parent-child relationship, every coefficient is partitioned and encoded for the zerotree structure. It demonstrates higher PSNR under the same bit rate. These results show that the encoding process of the proposed coder is more accurate than the conventional ones for images that include many high-frequency elements.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a scale for evaluation of Parent's Literacy Interaction Rating Scale (PLIRS) for preschool children and to examine its validity and reliability. The participants of this study were 342 Korean mothers with children of 3 to 5 year olds. The methods for data analysis included item analysis, factor analysis for construct validity, Pearson correlations between PLIRS and two sub tests of EC-HOME for concurrent validity, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for reliability. The item discrimination was determined by comparing the highest and lowest groups using Chi-square (${\chi}^2$), and Cramer's V. The 25 items of the scale were found to be satisfactory in item discrimination. The concurrent validity was also identified by correlation between PLIRS and two sub tests of EC-HOME. Factor analysis revealed that the structure of the PLIRS consisted of three factors: 'open interaction', 'directive interaction', and 'picture-book reading interaction'. 'Open interaction' is based on 'Whole Language Approach', such as 'I have my child write as he/she likes even if they spell wrongly.' 'Directive interaction' is based on 'Code Emphasis Approach', such as 'I have my child take dictation.' 'Picture-book reading interaction' is how parents read picture-book with her/his children, such as 'When I read a picture book to my child, I ask various questions about a book story.' The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for internal consistency reliability range was .78 to .87 for three subscales. It was concluded that PLIRS was valid and reliable to examine the literacy interaction between parents and children in home.

  • This study developed the Place Attachment to Childhood Home Scale and evaluated its validity and reliability. Samples consisted of 418 college students of four universities. Data were collected by questionnaire based on retrospective questions about the childhood home. Factor analysis resulted in 5 dimensions of place attachment : affection, place identity, place rootedness, playfulness, and place dependence. Especially, playfulness was a unique finding. The result of confirmatory factor analysis supported the five-factor structure. There were also significant correlations among sub-factors. The reliability of the scale appeared high (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ = .948). Criterion-related validity was confirmed by significant correlations of the present scale with Attachment Scale to Place (Hess, 1997) and the Inventory of Parent Attachment (Armsden & Greenberg, 1987).
