  • The identification of a nonlinear vibration system based on the time domain parametric model has been widely studied in recent years. In most of the studies, the NARMAX model has been used for the identification of a nonlinear system. However, the computational load for the identification with this model is quite heavy. In this paper, a new modeling procedure for nonlinear system identification in discrete time domain is proposed. The proposed model has less initial nonlinear terms than NARMAX model, and the terms in the proposed model are derived from physically meaningful way. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through the simulation, and the result shows that the proposed model can identify the nonlinear characteristics of the vibration system very will less computational effort.

  • In this paper, we present a new, easy-to-generate system that is capable of creating virtual 3D tree models and simulating a variety of growth processes of a tree from a single, real tree image. We not only construct various tree models with the same trunk through our proposed digital image matting method and skeleton-based abstraction of branches, but we also animate the visual growth of the constructed 3D tree model through usage of the branch age information combined with a scaling factor. To control the simulation of a tree growth process, we consider tree-growing attributes, such as branching orders, branch width, tree size, and branch self-bending effect, at the same time. Other invisible branches and leaves are automatically attached to the tree by employing parametric branch libraries under the conventional procedural assumption of structure having a local self-similarity. Simulations with a real image confirm that our system makes it possible to achieve realistic tree models and growth processes with ease.

  • Although inverter-driven hydraulic elevators(HEL's) have advantages over traditional valve-controlled HEL's energy efficiency and performance they need robustness in performance and stability to accomodate nonlinearities big parametric variations and resonances in mechanical-hydraulic inner system. In this paper a robust controller based on DGKF/$\mu$ mixed approach is applied to a HEL system with carring capacity of 24 persons for Incheon International Airport. The results of a test tower(T/T) has shown good ro-bustness in performance and stability of the proposed controller thereby proving a feasibility of this robust controller-based approach for other HEL problems.

  • In the present study, process optimization for thermal-sprayed Ni-based alloy coating has been performed using Taguchi method and analysis of variance(ANOVA). Ni-based alloy coatings were fabricated by flame spray process on steel substrate, and the hardness test and wear test were performed. Experiments were designed as per Taguchi's L9 orthogonal array and tests were conducted with different Oxygen gas flow, Acetylene gas flow, Powder feed rate and Spray distance. Multi response signal to noise ratio (MRSN) was calculated for the response variables and the optimum combination level of factors was obtained simultaneously using Taguchi's parametric design.

  • In this study a analytical model for a structure with buckling-restrained unbonded knee-braces is proposed, and a performance-based seismic design procedure for such a system Is provided. The proposed structure system has advantage of simplifying the structural design procedure in that the hinge-connected main structural members, such as beams and columns, are designed only for gravity loads, and all the lateral seismic load is resisted by the braces. The design procedure is based on the concept of equivalent damping, and is implemented to the capacity spectrum method. Parametric study is performed with design variables such as yield stress and cross-sectional area of knee-braces to find out proper slope of the braces.

  • The local structure of CMAC neural networks (NN) results in better and faster controllers for nonlinear dynamical systems. In this paper, we propose a CMAC NN-based disturbance observer and its corresponding controller for a flexible joint robot. The CMAC NN-based disturbance observer compensates for the parametric uncertainties and the external disturbances throughout the entire mechanical system. Finally, a simulation result is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed design method's robust tracking performance.

  • For the rational design of welded joint, it is needed to assess repeatedly the fatigue life of the joint with various dimensions and welding conditions. In this paper, an automation of repeated process of fatigue life assessment for welded cruciform joint was studied. The process is related to stress analysis in vicinity of weld-toe and fatigue life assessment based on analyzed stress distribution. With the change of design condition including dimensions and/or welding heat input, the above two works have to be performed. Using the commercial tool for system integration, ModelCenter, an automation of the repeated process for welded cruciform joint based on 2D modeling was achieved. In this automation system, data exchanges between programs regardless of commercial or in-house one work well, and parametric studies for optimal design can be performed.

  • An efficient optimum design process has been developed and applied to systematically design a lock-up clutch system for a torque converter used in an automatic transmission. A simulated annealing algorithm was applied to determine the parameters of the compressive helical damper springs in the clutch. The determination of the number, location, a number of turns, and deflection of damper springs plays an important role in reducing vibration and noise in the lock-up system. Next, FE-based shape optimization was coded to find the shape of the clutch disk that would satisfy the strength, noise and vibration requirements. Using the optimum code, parametric studies were performed to see how spring diameters and frequencies of clutch systems changed as the damper spring traveling angles and the torques were varied. Based on the optimum results, five different designs for clutches with different springs were fabricated and vibration analyses and tests were conducted to validate the accuracy of the proposed method. Results from the two methods show a good correlation.

  • This study is concerned with a numerical analysis based on the finite element method to describe the effect of midplane delamination in smart laminated composite plate structures. A new finite element model for centrally located delamination and healthy section was developed and coded in Matlab. The transient analysis of delaminated composite plate with integrated Active Fiber Composite (AFC) was investigated in the present article. The formulation of the governing equation was based on the minimum total potential energy approach. The Newmark time integration technique was employed to solve the differential equations. A parametric study on the effects of boundary conditions and AFC patch location, in presence of delamination on the laminated plate were studied.
