  • Brick is not only aesthetically beautiful and emotional material, but also eco-friendly and good building commodity for human health. Nonetheless, the use of brick has declined, due to the difficulty of building high-rise buildings and the limitation of the free form implementation. However, modern society is increasingly interested in environmentally friendly finishing materials for solving environmental problems. From this point of view, the brick architecture is being reexamined as a material to improve the living environment and to provide comfort without destroying nature. In addition, the development of digital technology enables the implementation of various types of masonry method and curved forms. Parametric design is one of the ways to realize the curved forms and various architectural expressions for brick architecture. In this background, the purpose of this study is to develop algorithms that can easily generate curved brick walls through parametric design, enable various pattern designs, and respond to real-time feedback. The details of the study are as follows. First of all, we examine organic architecture, the trend of brick architecture, and the concept of parametric design. Secondly, In order to generate curved surface with complex curvature, major planning factors affecting form generation are examined. Finally, we develop a parametric design method that consists of generating a curved surface for brick arrangement, implementing a parametric algorithm, and generating a curved form using bricks. Consequentially, we propose an algorithm that can maximize the use of ready-made bricks without using cut bricks to design curved walls and present efficient and economical design alternatives.

  • This study aims the development of a semi-analytic method for the parametric roll of large containerships advancing in longitudinal waves. A 1.5 Degree-of-Freedom(DOF) model is proposed to account the change of transverse stability induced by wave elevations and vertical motions (heave and pitch). By approximating the nonlinearity of restoring moment at large heel angles, the magnitude of roll amplitude is predicted as well as susceptibility check for parametric roll occurrence. In order to increase the accuracy of the prediction, the relationship between righting arm(GZ) and metacentric height(GM) is examined in the presence of incident waves, and then a new formula is proposed. Based on the linear approximation of the mean and first harmonic component of GM, the equation of parametric roll in irregular wave excitations is introduced, and the computational results of the proposed model are validated by comparing those of weakly nonlinear simulation based on an impulse-response-function method combined with strip theory. The present semi-analytic doesn’ t require heavy computational effort, so that it is very efficient particularly when numerous sea conditions for the analysis of parametric roll should be considered.

  • This study proposes a parametric modeling method for efficient preliminary design of FCM(Free Cantilever Method) bridge. The method is capable of automatic fitting of cross section according to variation of span length of box girder which has variational section. Parameters for forming longitudinal geometry of box girder are defined, then implicit and explicit constraints, and functional relations among them are defined by applying statistics of parameters used in FCM bridge designs. The constraints and relations are applied to a sample bridge for verifying applicability of parametric modeling. In addition, material quantity of the sample model generated by parametric modeling is estimated and compared to the quantity of the real designed model to check the accuracy of the automatically designed parametric model.

  • A parametric study has been conducted to investigate the effect of the geometry on the strength of an unidirectional and fabric hybrid laminated composite joint. Tests are conducted for the specimens with nine different edge-to-hole diameter or width-to-hole diameter ratios. For the finite element analysis, the characteristic length method is used, and the tests for determining the characteristic length are performed additionally. Nonlinear contact problem between the pin and laminate is modeled by the gap element in MSC/NASTRAN. Tsai-Wu failure criteria is applied to the stress on the characteristic curve. The finite element and experimental results shows good agreement in strength of composite joint. Results of the parametric study shows the effect of the geometry is remarkable in the specimens with width-to-hole diameter ratio less than 2.8 and edge-to-hole diameter ratio less than 1.4.

  • Engineers need to reduce the product design time interval and deal with frequent design changes. For this purpose a design expert system has been developed where a 3D CAD system is used for the visualization of a design layout especially the car audio design. This expert system is based on the configuration design methodology, one of the design methods which emulates the engineering design process, and the parametric design method. The design methods and heuristic knowledge are represented as rules, and design parts are represented as objects with properties. After an inference process, design parameters are extracted and they are used leer the parametric design. This study focused on the shape visualization of product components in the preliminary design phase.

  • Parametric design systems serve as powerful assistive tools in the design process by providing a flexible approach for the generation of a vast number of design alternatives. However, contemporary parametric design systems focus primarily on low-level engineering and structural forms, without an explicit means to also take into account high-level, cognitively motivated people-centred design goals. We present a precedent-based parametric design method that integrates people-centred design "precedents" rooted in empirical evidence directly within state of the art parametric design systems. As a use-case, we illustrate the general method in the context of an empirical study focusing on the multi-modal analysis of wayfinding behaviour in two large-scale healthcare environments. With this use-case, we demonstrate the manner in which: (1). a range of empirically established design precedents -e.g., pertaining to visibility and navigation- may be articulated as design constraints to be embedded directly within state of the art parametric design tools (e.g., Grasshopper); and (2). embedded design precedents lead to the (parametric) generation of a number of morphologies that satisfy people-centred design criteria (in this case, pertaining to wayfinding). Our research presents an exemplar for the integration of cognitively motivated design goals with parametric design-space exploration methods. We posit that this opens-up a range of technological challenges for the engineering and development of next-generation computer aided architecture design systems.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a PC level freeform surface modeling system which explicitly represents information of part geometry. Surface modeler uses nonuniform rational B-spline (NURBS) function with nonuniform knot vector for the flexible modeling work. The results of this study are as follows. 1) By implementation surface modeler through applying representation scheme proposed to represent free-form surface explicity, the technical foundation to develop free-from surface modeling system using parametric method. 2) Besides the role to model geometric shape of a surface, geometric modeler is developed to model arbitrary geometric shape. By doing this, the availability of the modeling system is improved. Geometric modeler can be utilized application fields such as collision test of tool and fixture, and tool path generation for NC machine tool.

  • We consider a general semiparametric additive risk model that consists of three components. They are parametric, purely and smoothly nonparametric components. In parametric component, time dependent term is known up to proportional constant. In purely nonparametric component, time dependent term is an unknown function, and time dependent term in smoothly nonparametric component is an unknown but smoothly function. As an estimation method of this model, we use the weighted least square estimation by Huffer and McKeague (1991). We provide an illustrative example as well as a simulation study that compares the performance of our method with the ordinary least square method.

  • The objective of this study is to compare the suitability of a non-parametric and 3 parametric distributions in the characterization of prediction intervals of photovoltaic power forecasts with high confidence levels. The prediction intervals of the forecasts are calculated using a method based on recent past data similar to the target forecast input data, and on a distribution assumption for the forecast error. To compare the suitability of the distributions, prediction intervals were calculated using the proposed method and each of the 4 distributions. The calculations were done for one year of day-ahead forecasts of hourly power generation of 432 PV systems. The systems have different sizes and specifications, and are installed in different locations in Japan. The results show that, in general, the non-parametric distribution assumption for the forecast error yielded the best prediction intervals. For example, with a confidence level of 85% the use of the non-parametric distribution assumption yielded a median annual forecast error coverage of 86.9%. This result was close to the one obtained with the Laplacian distribution assumption (87.8% of coverage for the same confidence level). Contrasting with that, using a Gaussian and Hyperbolic distributions yielded median annual forecast error coverage of 89.5% and 90.5%.
