Information processing in variable and noisy environments is usually accomplished by means of adaptive filters. Among various adaptive algorithms, Least Mean Square (LMS) has become the most popular for its robustness, good tracking capabilities and simplicity, both in terms of computational load and easiness of implementation. In practical application of the LMS algorithm, the most important key parameter is the Step Size. As is well known, if the Step Size is large, the convergence rate of the algorithm will be rapid, but the steady state mean square error (MSE) will increase. On the other hand, if the Step Size is small, the steady state MSE will be small, but the convergence rate will be slow. Many researches have been proposed to alleviate this drawback by using a variable Step Size. In this paper, a new variable Step Size LMS(VSSLMS) called Categorized VSSLMS (CVSSLMS) is proposed. CVSSLMS updates the Step Size by categorizing the current status of the gradient, hence significantly improves the convergence rate. The performance of the proposed algorithm was verified from the view point of convergence rate, Excessive Mean Square Error(EMSE), and complexity through experiments.

Several complex processes that are employed in industries, such as shipping, power plants, and the petrochemical industry, involve time-varying behavior as well as strong nonlinear behavior during operation. The fixed-parameter proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers have difficulty in dealing with control problems that occur in such processes. In this paper, we propose a method of designing a nonlinear PID controller for industrial processes that exhibit a large number of nonlinearities and time-varying behavior. The gains of the nonlinear PID controller are characterized by a simple nonlinear function of the error and/or error rate depending on the process set-point and output. We tune the user-defined parameters using a genetic algorithm by minimizing the integral of time absolute error (ITAE) index. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by performing a comparison of the proposed method and two other nonlinear and adaptive methods that are employed for reference tracking, disturbance-rejection performances, and robustness to parameter changes on a continuously stirred tank reactor.

As the importance of GNSS system increases, the necessity of independent system is increased also. When the independent GNSS system is required, GNSS signal design is necessary with requirement definition. This paper suggests the design method of GNSS signal using the analysis result of receiver performance. First, the candidates are defined based on the design elements. Then the receiver performance of the candidates is analyzed based on the performance evaluation parameters. The weights of performance evaluation parameter are defined in order to consider the receiver performance in a various aspects. Finally, the calculation of normalized performance evaluation parameters and weights are derived to obtain the compared value for signal selection. Spreading code, modulation method and carrier frequency are considered as design parameters. Also, correlation width, DLL PLL thermal noise jitter, frequency bandwidth and side lobe peak ratio are considered as performance evaluation parameters. And positioning performance, robustness to noise, bandwidth efficiency are considered as the performance aspects. This paper analyzes the performance of each candidate using software based simulator and suggest the method to compare objectively the performance of each candidates.
With the explosive growth in the volume of information, Internet users are experiencing considerable difficulties in obtaining necessary information online. Against this backdrop, ever-greater importance is being placed on a recommender system that provides information catered to user preferences and tastes in an attempt to address issues associated with information overload. To this end, a number of techniques have been proposed, including content-based filtering (CBF), demographic filtering (DF) and collaborative filtering (CF). Among them, CBF and DF require external information and thus cannot be applied to a variety of domains. CF, on the other hand, is widely used since it is relatively free from the domain constraint. The CF technique is broadly classified into memory-based CF, model-based CF and hybrid CF. Model-based CF addresses the drawbacks of CF by considering the Bayesian model, clustering model or dependency network model. This filtering technique not only improves the sparsity and scalability issues but also boosts predictive performance. However, it involves expensive model-building and results in a tradeoff between performance and scalability. Such tradeoff is attributed to reduced coverage, which is a type of sparsity issues. In addition, expensive model-building may lead to performance instability since changes in the domain environment cannot be immediately incorporated into the model due to high costs involved. Cumulative changes in the domain environment that have failed to be reflected eventually undermine system performance. This study incorporates the Markov model of transition probabilities and the concept of fuzzy clustering with CBCF to propose predictive clustering-based CF (PCCF) that solves the issues of reduced coverage and of unstable performance. The method improves performance instability by tracking the changes in user preferences and bridging the gap between the static model and dynamic users. Furthermore, the issue of reduced coverage also improves by expanding the coverage based on transition probabilities and clustering probabilities. The proposed method consists of four processes. First, user preferences are normalized in preference clustering. Second, changes in user preferences are detected from review score entries during preference transition detection. Third, user propensities are normalized using patterns of changes (propensities) in user preferences in propensity clustering. Lastly, the preference prediction model is developed to predict user preferences for items during preference prediction. The proposed method has been validated by testing the robustness of performance instability and scalability-performance tradeoff. The initial test compared and analyzed the performance of individual recommender systems each enabled by IBCF, CBCF, ICFEC and PCCF under an environment where data sparsity had been minimized. The following test adjusted the optimal number of clusters in CBCF, ICFEC and PCCF for a comparative analysis of subsequent changes in the system performance. The test results revealed that the suggested method produced insignificant improvement in performance in comparison with the existing techniques. In addition, it failed to achieve significant improvement in the standard deviation that indicates the degree of data fluctuation. Notwithstanding, it resulted in marked improvement over the existing techniques in terms of range that indicates the level of performance fluctuation. The level of performance fluctuation before and after the model generation improved by 51.31% in the initial test. Then in the following test, there has been 36.05% improvement in the level of performance fluctuation driven by the changes in the number of clusters. This signifies that the proposed method, despite the slight performance improvement, clearly offers better performance stability compared to the existing techniques. Further research on this study will be directed toward enhancing the recommendation performance that failed to demonstrate significant improvement over the existing techniques. The future research will consider the introduction of a high-dimensional parameter-free clustering algorithm or deep learning-based model in order to improve performance in recommendations.

Recently, a permanent magnet synchronous motor of middle and small-capacity has high torque, high precision control and acceleration / deceleration characteristics. But existing control has several problems that include unpredictable disturbances and parameter changes in the high accuracy and rigidity control industry or nonlinear dynamic characteristics not considered in the driving part. In addition, in the drive method for the control of low-vibration and high-precision, the process of connecting the permanent magnet synchronous motor and the load may cause the response characteristic of the system to become very unstable, to cause vibration, and to overload the system. In order to solve these problems, various studies such as adaptive control, optimal control, robust control and artificial neural network have been actively conducted. In this paper, an incremental encoder of the permanent magnet synchronous motor is used to detect the position of the rotor. And the position of the detected rotor is used for low vibration and high precision position control. As the controller, we propose augmented state feedback control with a speed observer and first order deadbeat disturbance observer. The augmented state feedback controller performs control that the position of the rotor reaches the reference position quickly and precisely. The addition of the speed observer to this augmented state feedback controller compensates for the drop in speed response characteristics by using the previously calculated speed value for the control. The first order deadbeat disturbance observer performs control to reduce the vibration of the motor by compensating for the vibrating component or disturbance that the mechanism has. Since the deadbeat disturbance observer has a characteristic of being vulnerable to noise, it is supplemented by moving average filter method to reduce the influence of the noise. Thus, the new controller with the first order deadbeat disturbance observer can perform more robustness and precise the position control for the influence of large inertial load and natural frequency. The simulation stability and efficiency has been obtained through C language and Matlab Simulink. In addition, the experiment of actual 2.5[kW] permanent magnet synchronous motor was verified.

This study was focused on the stabilization of surge motions of a moored vessel under irregular head seas. A two-point moored vessel shows strong non-linearity even in regular sea, owing to its inherent non-linear restoring force. A long-crested irregular wave is subjected to the vessel system, resulting in more complex nonlinear behavior of the displacement and velocities than in the case of regular waves. Sliding mode control (SMC) is implemented in the moored vessel to control both surge displacement and surge velocity. The SMC can provide a closed-loop system with performance and robustness against parameter uncertainties and disturbances; however, chattering is the main drawback for implementing SMC. The goal of minimizing the chattering and state convergence with accuracy is achieved using a quasi-sliding mode that approximates the discontinuous function via a continuous sigmoid function. Numerical simulations were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.
In this paper, a new integral variable structure regulation controller(IVSRC) is designed by using a special integral sliding surface and a disturbance observer for the improved regulation control of highly nonlinear robot manipulators with prescribed output performance. The sliding surface having the integral state with a special initial condition is employed in this paper to exactly predetermine the ideal sliding trajectory from a given initial condition to origin without any reaching phase. And a continuous sliding mode input using the disturbance observer is also introduced in oder to effectively follow the predetermined sliding trajectory within the prescribed accuracy without large computation burden. The performance of the prescribed tracking accuracy to the predetermined sliding trajectory is clearly investigated in detail through the two theorems together with the closed loop stability. The design of the proposed IVSRC is separated into the performance design and robustness design in each independent link. The usefulness of the algorithm has been demonstrated through simulation studies on the regulation control of a two link manipulator under parameter uncertainties and payload variations, in view of no reaching phase, no overshoot, predetermined response with prescribed accuracy, easy change of output performance, separation of design phase, and so on.

The wound induction motor can provide high starting torque and reduced starting current simultaneously by inserting large resistor externally when starting. And this technique is one of the well known methods among the induction motor starting methods and generally used for heavy load starting such as crane and cement factories. The conventional PI controller has been widely used in industrial application due to the simple control algorithm and is generally used for control of current torque, position, and speed for the wound induction motor drive system. However, the conventional control system for wound induction motor may result in poor performance because sensors have to be used but are often limited by the environmental condition. Recently, to overcome these problems, many sensorless vector control methods for the wound induction motor have been studied. This paper presents a MRAS method for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor drive. In the conventional MRAS method, in low frequency, the stator resistance variation may result in poor performance. Therefore, this paper presents a MRAS method with stator and rotor resistance tuning for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor to overcome several shortages of the conventional MRAS caused by parameter variation and to enhance the robustness of the sensorless vector control. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through digital simulation.

This paper is to describe the improved vector control which can control the induction motor robustly in low speed. When the induction motor is drived with low speed, below 10 percent of the rated speed, an algorithm which can compensate the error of unit vector angle generated by the harmonics is proposed. Another algorithm which can be tuned to the rotor time constant so that nay be robust to the rotor parameter change in low speed and transient state was proposed. The ripple of flux and torque was reduced by the proposed vector control and then the stable output characteristics was obtained in low speed. When the input and output is sinusoidal, the proposed vector control, the direct vector control and the indirect vector control were analyzed and compared in the low speed characteristics. And each control characteristics is compared and analyzed in state of containing harmonics. The estimation and tunning performance of rotor time constant is confirmed with simulation. The whole control system is implemented by real hardware and experimented to compare the proposed vector control with the direct vector control. As a result of the experiment with two control methods in low speed, the torque ripple of the proposed vector control is improved by 45 percent than the direct vector control. And it is confirmed that the flux current ripple is reduced in 0.2 p.u. and torque current ripple is reduced in 0.6 p.u. It is confirmed that the rotor time constant by the estimation and the tunning algorithm is tunned by the real rotor time constant. Finally, it was confirmed that the validity and robustness for the proposed vector control in low speed existed.
Application of a catchment modelling system requires recorded information to ascertain the reliability and robustness of the predicted flow conditions. Where this recorded information is not available, the necessary information for reliable and robust predictions must be obtained from other available information sources. The alternative approach presented in this paper used inference models for getting this necessary information that is required to calibrate and validate the catchment modelling system for both an ungauged and a gauged catchments. In this study, inference models were developed for determination of control parameters of the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), mainly based on landuse component of the catchment, which is a major factor to impact on quantity and quality of catchment runoff. Results from the study show that the new approach for determination of the spatially variable control parameters produced more accurate estimates than a traditional approach. Also, the number of control parameters estimated can be reduced significantly as the proposed method only requires determination of control parameters associated with each land use of the catchment while a traditional approach needs to assign a number of control parameters for a number of subcatchment.
