Magnetic Properties of Transition Metal Monolayers on Ta(001) Surfaces

  • The magnetic and structural properties of transition metal (Mn, Fe, Co) monolayers on Ta(001) surfaces are investigated theoretically by using the first principles full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. Mn and Fe monolayers become ferromagnetic on Ta(001) surfaces while Co monolayers becomes non-magnetic. The paramagnetism of Co monolayers is explained by the Stoner theory of magnetism. The magnetic coupling of a transition metal overlayer with a substrate is ascribed to the orbital hybridization between the s and d orbitals of the transition metal.

Observation of bubble dynamics under water in high-magnetic fields using a high-speed video camera

  • The observations of rapid motion of bubbles under water for approximately 50 ms or less in high-magnetic fields of 10 T have been carried out successfully for the first time. The observation system constructed is composed of a high-speed video camera, a telescope, a cryostat with a split-type superconducting magnet, a light source, a mirror and a transparent sample cell. Using this system, the influence of magnetic field on the path and shape of single bubbles of O$_2$ (paramagnetism) and N$_2$ (diamagnetism) has been examined carefully. Experimental values describing the path are in good agreement with theoretical values calculated on the basis of the magneto-Archimedes effect, despite the effect of magnetism on the bubble. However, no effect of magnetism on the shape of the bubble is observed. In addition, the influence of magnetic field on drag coefficient of the bubble is discussed.

Preparation and Properties of Co$_{9-x}M_xS_8$(M = Ni, Rh, Ru, and Fe)

  • Samples with the nominal composition of $Co_{9-x}M_xS_8$(M = Ni, Rh, Ru, and Fe) were prepared, and their magnetic properties were measured. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that small amount of the elements Ni, Rh, and Fe could be incorporated into $Co_9S_8$ forming a homogeneous ${\pi}$-phase, whereas the Ru-incorporated sample could not be prepared in a single phase. The lattice parameter was observed to increase as other elements were incorporated into $Co_9S_8$. Samples incorporated with the elements of Ni, Rh, and Ru showed Pauli-paramagnetism while the Fe-incorporated sample exhibited weak ferromagnetism. The values of magnetic susceptibility for the Ni, Rh, Ru-incorporated samples were nearly the same as that of pure $Co_9S_8$.

  • $Tb^{3+}$이온이 첨가된 Hoya FR5 유리와 $Ce^{3+}$이론이 첨가된 Hoya FR4 유리의 Faraday 회전과 자기화를 4.2K-10K 저온 영역에서 자기장을 80kG까지 증가시키면서 온도 T와 자기장 H의 함수로 측정하였다. 사용파장은 아르곤 레이저의 514.5nm였다. H/T> $5kG.K^{-1}$ 이상에서 나타난 자기화 및 Faraday 회전의 포화현상을 상자성체 양자이론으로 해석할 수 있었다. 계산된 맺음변수들로부터 $Ce^{3+}$ 유리의 큰 Verdet 상수는 $4f\rightarrow5d$궤도 유효 전기쌍극자 전이효과에 기인되고 $Tb^{3+}$ 유리의 큰 Verdet 상수는 자기화에 기인됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • 본 연구에서는 온도 77K로부터 1,000K 사이에서의 $NiAl_0.8Fe_1.2O_4$Mossbauer 효과가 다루어졌다. Mossbauer spectra는 저온에서 준강자성에 의한 6선과 상자성에 의한 2중선으로 중첩되어 나타났다. 온도에 따른 효과는 $NiAl_0.8Fe_1.2O_4$의 자기적 성질이 온도상승에 따라서 ferrimagnetism으로부터 palamagnetism으로 변화되는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 그리고 자기완화 현상은 초상자성 효과에 의한 것으로나타났다.

전착법에 의한 Fe-45 wt%Ni-P 합금의 조직과 자기적 성질에 관한 연구 (A Study of Structures and Magnetic Properties of Electrodeposited Fe-45 wt%Ni-P Alloys)

  • The microstructures and magnetic properties of electrodeposited Fe-45 wt%Ni-P alloys have been investigated. The structures of electrodeposited Fe-45 wt%Ni alloy was FCC i.e. ${\gamma}$ phase and the size of crystallite was 10 nm. The structure of electrodeposited Fe-45 wt%Ni-1 wt%P alloy showed ${\gamma}$ phase and 7 nm sized nanocrystalline. The electrodeposited Fe-45 wt%Ni-P alloys containing 2∼3 wt% of P exhibited ${\gamma}$$\alpha$ dual phases. The electrodeposited Fe-45 wt%Ni-P alloys above 3.5 wt% showed an amorphous structure. P in the alloys acted grain refining and phase changing element. The resistivity of the electrodeposited alloys increased with P contents. Effective permeability at high frequency (above 1 MHz) increased with P contents up to 2 wt% and this was ascribed to the easier magnetization rotation owing to the reduction of eddy current. Effective permeability decreased with P contents above 3 wt% and this was ascribed to the transformation of the ferromagnetism of Fe-45 wt%Ni alloy gradually into paramagnetism with the introduction of P into the electrodeposited alloy matrix.

Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties of Sparteinium Tetrahalocuprate Monohydrate Compounds

  • The crystal structures of sparteinium tetrachlorocuprate monohydrate $[(C_{15}H_{28}N_2)CuCl_4{\cdot}H_2O]$, 1 and sparteinium tetrabromocuprate monohydrate $[(C_{15}H_{28}N_2)CBr_4{\cdot}H_2O]$, 2, were determined. The structures of 1 [orthorhombic, $P2_12_12_1$, a = 8.3080(10) ${\AA}$, b = 14.6797(19) ${\AA}$ and c = 16.4731(17) ${\AA}$], and 2 [orthorhombic, $P2_12_12_1$, a = 8.4769(7) ${\AA}$, b = 15.166(3) ${\AA}$ and c = 16.679(3) ${\AA}$], are composed of a doubly protonated sparteinium cation, $[C_{15}H_{28}N_2]^{2+}$, a discrete $CuX_4^{2-}$ anion $(X=Cl^-\;or\;Br^-)$, and one water molecule. These monomeric compounds are stabilized through various types of hydrogen bonding interaction in their packing structures. Crystal 2 exhibits weak anti-ferromagnetism (J = -3.24 $cm^{-1}$) as opposed to the magnetically isolated paramagnetism observed for 1. The results of comparative magneto-structural investigations of 1 and 2 suggest that the pathway for the weak anti-ferromagnetic super-exchange in 2 might be through a Cu-Br${\cdots}$Br-Cu contact.

Pd(111) 박막의 자성: 제일원리계산 (Magnetism of Pd(111) Thin Films: A First-principles Calculation)

  • Pd은 단일 원소 금속 중에서 자기 감수율이 가장 크고 외부 환경에 따라 강자성 특성을 보이기도 한다. 본 논문은 자성 연구에 가장 적합한 FLAPW 방법을 사용하여 5-ML과 9-ML Pd(111) 박막의 자성을 계산하였다. 전자간 교환-상관 상호작용을 고려하기 위해 LDA와 GGA를 도입하여 두 계산 결과를 비교하였다. LDA 계산은 덩치 Pd이 상자성 상태가 바닥 상태임을 예측하여 실험과 일치하는 반면, GGA 계산은 덩치 Pd이 강자성을 갖는 것으로 잘못 예측하여 Pd 자성에 대해서는 LDA 계산이 더 신뢰할 수 있음을 알았다. 5-ML Pd(111) 박막에 대한 LDA 계산 결과에 의하면 상자성 상태가 바닥인 덩치 Pd과는 다르게 강자성 상태가 더 안정적이었다. 박막의 중앙에 위치한 Pd이 가장 큰 자기모멘트($0.273{\mu}_B$)를 가지며 중앙 Pd 층의 |m| = 1 상태가 덩치의 그것과 큰 차이가 있어 5-ML Pd(111) 박막의 강자성을 유발하는 데 주요 역할을 함을 알 수 있었다. 9-ML Pd(111) 박막은 상자성 상태가 강자성 상태에 비해 안정하였으나 두 상태 사이의 총에너지 차이가 거의 없고 유한한 자기모멘트를 안정적으로 가지는 것으로 계산되어 강자성 상태가 준 안정적임을 보였다.
