  • The effect of anti freezing solution liquid film on the frost prevention is experimentally investigated. It is desirable that the antifreezing solution spreads widely on the heat exchanger surface forming thin liquid film to prevent frost nucleation and reduce the thermal resistance across the film. A porous layer coating technique is adopted to improve the wettedness of the anti freezing solution on a parallel plate heat exchanger. The antifreezing solution spreads widely on the heat exchanger surface with 100 $\mu$m thickness by the capillary force resulting from the porous structure. It is observed that the antifreezing solution liquid film prevents a parallel plate heat exchanger from frosting. The reductions of heat and mass transfer rate caused by thin liquid film are only $1\~2\%$ compared with those for non-liquid film surface.

  • The EMC's rheological effects on molding process are evaluated in this study. When considering mold processing for IC packages, the major concerning items in current studies are incomplete fill, severe wire sweeping and paddle shifts etc. To simulate EMC's fast curing rheokinetics with 3D mold flow behavior, one should select appropriate rheometry which characterize each EMC's rheological motion and finding empirical parameters for numerical analysis current studies present the new rheometry with parallel plate rheometry for reactive rheokinetic experiments, the experiment and numerical analysis is done with the commercial higher filler loaded EMC for the case of Thin Quad Plant Packages (TQFP) with package thickness below 1.0 mm. The experimental results and simulation results based on new rheometry matches well in point of the prediction of wire sweep, filling behavior of melt front advancement and void trapping position.

  • Simulation of three-dimensional turbulent flow with LES and DNS lakes much time and expense with currently available computing resources and requires big computing resources especially for high Reynolds number. The emerging alternative to provide the required computing power and working environment is the Grid computing technology. We developed the CFD code which carries out the parallel computing under the Grid environment. We constructed the Grid environment by connecting different PC-cluster systems located at two different institutes of Pusan National University in Busan and KISTI in Daejeon. The specification of PC-cluster located at two different institutes is not uniform. We run our parallelized computer code under the Grid environment and compared its performance with that obtained using the homogeneous computing environment. When we run our code under the Grid environment, the communication time between different computer nodes takes much larger time than the real computation time. Thus the Grid computing requires the highly fast network speed.

  • Separation motion analysis of staging system is conducted using combined analysis programs, which include unsteady aerodynamic analysis codes and dynamic motion analysis tools. In this study, the analysis is for the long-rang missile staging system. The purpose of this study is to verify the safety and reliance of the proposed staging system, and to find out the influence of angle of attack perturbation on staging. A structured parallel overset mesh called Chimera grid is used for the simulation of unsteady supersonic Euler flow solver. In addition, unsteady dynamic simulations are also performed.

  • We have investigated the Josephson vortex dynamics in $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O{8+\delta}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions subjected to a magnetic field parallel to $CuO_2$ planes. We investigated mesas with $40\times40{\mu}m^2$ in size and containing 6 and 20. intrinsic junctions. The zero field I-V characteristics exhibited a typical hysteretic, multi-branched nature of the intrinsic Josephson effect. At high magnetic fields (H>1.5 T), I-V characteristics showed flux flow steps. The Swihart velocity obtained from this observation was about $4.2\times10^5$ m/s, which was the lowest mode electromagnetic wave velocity of N coupled stack. The experimental I-V curves fitted well into the simple model of Cherenkov radiation including Ohmic and non-linear dissipation terms. This suggests that the dissipation mechanism of Josephson vortex be due to both Cherenkov radiation and quasiparticle tunneling current.

  • An advanced aeroelastic analysis using a computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is presented in this Paper. A general aeroelastic analysis system is originally developed and applied to realistic design problems in the transonic flow region, where strong shock wave interactions exist. The present computational approach is based on the modal-based coupled nonlinear analysis with the matched-point concept and adopts the high-speed parallel processing technique on the low-cost network based PC-clustered machines. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Euler equations using the unstructured grid system have been applied to easily consider complex configurations. It is typically shown that the advanced numerical approach can give very realistic and practical results for design engineers and safe flight tests. One can find that the present study conducts a virtual flutter flight test which are usually very dangerous in reality.

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of a coolant circuit arrangement on the heat transfer and air pressure drop of a fin-tube sensible heat exchanger with the corrugated fin surface. The air inlet temperature was set to $23^{\circ}C$,the relative humidity to 50% and the air inlet flow rate to 20, 22, $25m^3/min$, respectively. while the coolant temperature was set to $7^{\circ}C$, and the coolant mass flow rate to 10, 16, 22kg/min, respectively. Experiment showed that the exchanger having a diameter of 12.7mm with parallel circuit does better performance in sensible heat transfer and air pressure drop than those three of diameter of 12.7mm with a series circuit and that with diameter of 15.88mm with a parallel circuit.

  • Video from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is influenced by natural environments due to the light-weight UAV, specifically by winds. Thus UAV's shaking movements make the video shaking. Objective of this paper is making a stabilized video by removing shakiness of video acquired by UAV. Stabilizer estimates camera's motion from calculation of optical flow between two successive frames. Estimated camera's movements have intended movements as well as unintended movements of shaking. Unintended movements are eliminated by smoothing process. Experimental results showed that our proposed method performs almost as good as the other off-line based stabilizer. However estimation of camera's movements, i.e., calculation of optical flow, becomes a bottleneck to the real-time stabilization. To solve this problem, we make parallel stabilizer making average 30 frames per second of stabilized video. Our proposed method can be used for the video acquired by UAV and also for the shaking video from non-professional users. The proposed method can also be used in any other fields which require object tracking, or accurate image analysis/representation.

  • The PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cell is one of the promising fuel cell systems as a new small power generating device for automobiles and buildings. The optimal design of cooling plates installed between MEA (membrane electrode assembly) is very important to achieve high performance and reliability of the PEMFC because it is very sensitive to temperature variations. In this study, six types of cooling plate models for the PEMFC including basic serpentine and parallel shapes were designed and their cooling performances were analyzed by using three-dimensional fluid dynamics with commercial software. The model 3 designed by revising the basic serpentine model represented the best cooling performance among them in the aspect of uniformity of temperature distribution and thermal reliability, The serpentine models showed higher pressure drop than the parallel models due to a higher flow rate.

  • GASFLOW-MPI is a widely used scalable computational fluid dynamics numerical tool to simulate the fluid turbulence behavior, combustion dynamics, and other related thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear power plant containment. An efficient scalable linear solver for the large-scale pressure equation is one of the key issues to ensure the computational efficiency of GASFLOW-MPI. Several advanced Krylov subspace methods and scalable preconditioning methods are compared and analyzed to improve the computational performance. With the help of the powerful computational capability, the large eddy simulation turbulent model is used to resolve more detailed turbulent behaviors. A backward-facing step flow is performed to study the free shear layer, the recirculation region, and the boundary layer, which is widespread in many scientific and engineering applications. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data in the literature and the direct numerical simulation results by GASFLOW-MPI. Both time-averaged velocity profile and turbulent intensity are well consistent with the experimental data and direct numerical simulation result. Furthermore, the frequency spectrum is presented and a -5/3 energy decay is observed for a wide range of frequencies, satisfying the turbulent energy spectrum theory. Parallel scaling tests are also implemented on the KIT/IKET cluster and a linear scaling is realized for GASFLOW-MPI.
